An expression of accomplishment appeared in Kitar's face when the old man started giving relevant information. He was ready to thank and ask more questions when he noticed Grund's hand getting uncomfortably close to him. "What the... WHAT THE HELL YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING, YOU STUPID BASTARD?" With anger consuming him, Kitar throws a punch right at Grund's chin before taking off again. He flies closer to the old man and talks very fast and with the most sarcastic tone he can muster, looking at him. "Yeah, I saw his gentle soul with my two eyes. Thanks for the info anyway. See ya!" With that, he launches himself as fast as he can to Harburk's house, ignoring anything the old man, Grund or anyone nearby says as he does so.

Squinty

The aarakocra lands a few feet away from his destination. As he walks towards the door, he tries to hear anything from inside. If he doesn't hear anything suspicious, he will knock the door firmly.

(ooc: a map reminder since we're a couple pages from it's last posting)

Kitar

Kitar

You land outside what you believe to be Harburk's house. Leaning up to the door you listen for any signs of movement. And just as your head nears the door, it opens to reveal a very large male human. Tall and broad, this man has bags under his eyes, a scowl on his face, and enough muscles to make a second, smaller human. He looks at Kitar with a dead stare and says, "It's rude not to knock."

Hexion and Iados

As you head towards the sound of yelling, you'll hear Kitar yell some more, and then you'll see him flying back towards the center of town.

(ooc: if Hexion wasn't heading there, he'll still hear the yelling and be able to see Kitar fly)

Kitar, Hexion and Iados

"Ah, perhaps here's something actually worth getting worked up for," said Hexion, briskly following after Iados. As they approached an intersection between the road they are on and another street to the left, however, Hexion and Iados again heard Kitar yelling in the distance, then saw the bird-man fly off.

"Oh, come on!" exclaimed Hexion, throwing his arms up in defeat. "Am I to find nothing to sate my boredom today?"

Dev lifted his hands to the back of his head, walking closely behind the pink girl before speaking up. "That said, she's a bit of a tumblr so if you don't mind two beds would be preferable." Dev's gaze shots towards the other patrons as he passed by but did little more to pay them any attention, figuring that once one of those that followed would probably find a lead.

Kitar rolls his eyes as the large man opens the door before he could do much. He raises his left hand and gently knocks the wall besides the door three times before speaking. "Now that we got that out of the way, I was told I could find a man named Harburk in this place. Is that information correct?"

Kitar

"Sarcasm when all I ever get is two hours of sleep a night? **** off," replies the man as he slams the door in Kitar's face. Inside, you can hear the creaks of the wooden floor as he walks away from the door, and a heavier sound of pressure on a single spot. Then nothing. There are some footsteps coming your way as a human woman seems to have come out of an adjacent building, the smell of smoke billowing after her.

Dev and Luka

The two of you move through the hallway following Kaylessa. She stops at the last room on the right of the hallway, she opens the door and beckons you two through it. After closing the door, she turns to you and says, "If it's true you are adventurers, there is something very wrong. Out in Lance Rock there is an immense evil presence. I tried telling the constable, the elders and at first, anyone who would listen. But everyone ignored me, and now I have to keep my head down about it unless I want to lose all my business. But I know it's there to the North. It's the cause of all of Red Larch's trouble, and you can quote me on that!"

Hexion and Iados

As you are watching Kitar moving away through the air, you'll see the same man Iados scared off earlier jogging down the road towards you two. He doesn't seem to be paying attention, his head down as he clearly seems to be tired of running, but for whatever reason, he does seem to need to head somewhere quickly.

Obed

The fire crackles pleasantly off in the corner, the smell of the sea continues to hold a prominence from Ghileeda's hair. The other table of four patrons seems to have quieted down a bit after Dev and Luka have passed by, all of them more focused on leaning back in their chairs and drinking than talking. The curtains are a bit drawn, the light of the mid-day sun floats through the cracks, motes of dust dance in the beams of light as you sit and relax. The heat of the fire takes the humidity out of the air more than it raises the temperature of the room.

Context

"Well, to be honest," contemplates Obed, "a ship I served on sank in a storm. As the sole survivor, no other crews would take on a cursed man such as I. I travel because there is nothing else to do. Tell me about Red Larch. Is there something redeeming about the dustball?"

Spotting Kitar overhead elicits yet another sigh from the paladin. Typical of the birdman to cause trouble and then flee the scene. Still some investigation can't hurt. Iados' train of thought is derailed momentarily when he spies the old man from earlier making his way along the street towards them. Not wanting to let this opportunity slide he takes a side step, putting himself in the old mans path, while fishing through his own coin pouch. "Hey old man! You dropped your coin earlier. You should be more careful. Someone may have taken it." As he finishes speaking he holds out the fistful of coins towards the man.

Hexion and Iados

The old man looks up at Iados' words, his eyes going wide. "Y-you again! No, keep it, just don't kill anyone! Monster birds, devils in the streets, I have to alert Constable Harburk immediately! The whole village is in danger! Just leave Grund alone, he's done nothing wrong!" He sprints past you two, then North along The Long Road. Any further words from him are missed due to distance, and you're pretty sure no matter what you say, he isn't slowing down. Something very obviously has him scared out of his mind.

Obed

"Many things," coos Ghileeda, "We have this lovely Inn, good food and drink to be had all around, there's a large Market held every ten days in the South East of town that people travel from all over to be at, many come just for poor Grund's famous pickles. Some lords and ladies travel nearly one hundred miles for Helvur Tarnlar's clothing, which I'm told feels like wearing woven liquid, though I've never had the coin to see for myself. Doesn't that all sound quite luxurious? Yes, Red Larch has quite a bit to offer."

Seeing Ghileeda is not going to give much more, Obed continues the shallow conversation pleasantly. At least there is drink. When it seems like it may be appropriate, Obed will catch the eyes of his fellow drinkers in the room and raise a glass to them.

Luka tilted her head as she listened to Kaylessa's plight, after making a brief attempt to make sure nobody was eavesdropping, she responded in a hushed tone. "Well, I'm fairly certain we'd be able to look into that, I'm certainly all about kicking evil presences in nether areas, and I suspect my comrades will be of like mind, but I'll need a bit more information first. First, what sort of trouble would that be? This town seemed pretty peaceful from what I could tell. Secondly, do those fellows in the bar have something to do with it? Third, do you know anything about Sumber Hills? And fourth, would you be able to provide directions to Lance Rock?"

Iados watches the old man leave, mouth slightly agape as he runs by. "...why does everyone think I'm trying to kill them? What is wrong with this town?" He shakes his head, turning back towards Hexion, his voice edged with anger. "Do I look like a murderer to you? I spend my entire life tracking down bandits and necromancers and thieves - I've never killed anyone who didn't deserve it! But no the demon-spawn is in town! Hide your daughters and pray to your damned gods! Who knows what horrors he will unleash!?" Already shouting by this point the paladin quickly catches himself, closes his eyes and takes a few deep breaths.

Opening his eyes again he looks his companion. "Sorry. That was... unprofessional. *Sigh* Look as much as I'm enjoying our little walk I'm going to head for the inn. I need a drink and this town apparently needs to see less of me. If you happen to spot Kitar... you know what just pretend you don't know them. It will be easier that way." He turns to walk before adding. "And try to keep out of trouble." With a half-hearted wave the tiefling stalks off along the main road in the direction of the Swinging Sword.

Dev and Luka

"I don't know," Kaylessa replies, "The evil is too much for me to investigate further, which I'm truly sorry for. No, the patrons out there are simply other travelers, one of which said he was a former adventurer who watched his compatriots die a horrible death. I have heard some rumors of graves that shouldn't be in the Sumber Hills, but I don't go out that way. It's nearly due North to Lance Rock, at the fork in the road, one path deviates slightly West, but the path to the right that continues due North, that's where Lance Rock is. It's almost half a day's journey by foot, though."

Luka

Obed

You talk some more, and all you will discover is that Ghileeda has heard a lot of rumors, though none that she would give many details for. It does sound like this town has its share of troubles, and that a good party of adventurers would be considered very useful overall.

When you raise your glass, one of the men raises his back at you and says, "To travel, and may you survive it. Where are you headed, traveler?"

Hexion and Iados

Iados stalks off back down The Long Road in the wake of the old man that apparently wants nothing to do with him. A child walks across Iados' path, looks up at him and tilts her head to the side in an appraising manner. "What's wrong with your head, mister?" she asks.

Kitar sighs heavily as the man slams the door on his face. "Ugh. Why everyone in this town has to be either stupid or a jerk?" He recomposes himself and, when he hears the woman's footsteps, knocks the door. Let's try again, thinks the Ranger.

Focused as he is on not trying to cause another scene in the short time it will take him to reach the inn, Iados almost misses the girl entirely when she speaks up. He takes a moment before answering, trying his damnedest to relax and put on something at least resembling a genuine smile and almost subconsciously turns his face slightly that the worst of his scarring faces away from the child. "There is nothing wrong with my head little one. It it just how I was born. Elves have their pointed ears, dwarves have their beard. My people, we have horns and we have tails. It is simply how things are."

"Ah, the pains of being different," muttered Hexion, absently rubbing his rounded ears with his fingers as he stood where Iados had left him. The moment lasted only so long, however, before he smiled his usual smile, and walked off after Iados. The inn was up north, the old man had ran north, and Kitar seemed to have landed up north. Which way else was he to go?

Dev looked to the woman then luka before resting his hand on her her shoulder. "hm, I think we should bring this up with the others luka, sounds like if we let it slide by it could become a bigger pain in the ass later." he then look to the woman standing before the pair and nodded. "I think we could possibly look into this for you miss, but we ARE adventurers after all, we might need compensation, maybe a free room for the night, eh?" He quickly shot the woman a big wide grin to his offer.

Kitar

The woman walks right past you, the smell of smoked meats hanging heavily off of her as she knocks on the door you are in front of. The same grumpy man answers the door and says, "What do you want, Jalessa? I just wanted a few minutes of sleep between my shifts."

"We just got in five hogs that need breaking down," says Jalessa in a matter-of-fact tone.

"And what in the Nine Hells do you want?" the man asks, finally noticing Kitar. But before Kitar even has a chance to open his beak in response, the old man who had been with Grund in the open area with the outhouses and pickles comes running around the corner. He stops dead in his tracks, nearly falling over, his chest heaving with labored breath from the running, shock filling his face upon seeing Kitar there.

"Constable Harburk!" the old man calls out. "This bird-monster just assaulted Grund twice! It's a monster and dangerous! I told it you knew about some troubles along the Cairn Road and to see you, and then it attacked again screaming something about Grund being a 'stupid bastard!' Please, help us, Constable!"

"WHAT?" exclaims Jalessa.

"You better get explaining, Bird," says Harburk threateningly.

Iados and Hexion

The old man running down The Long Road makes a sharp left just before the center of town, headed down a side street by the shop with the carved ham sign. You'll hear some muffled shouting from that area, but you're a little too far to properly hear whats going on right now (especially Hexion who is a bit farther away from the center of town that Iados). The young girl on the other hand, doesn't seem perturbed by these events at all, nor by Iados' awkward expressions. She giggles at his explanation, and holds a small hand up to him.

"You're silly, I like you," she says. "My name is Amycipus. What's yours?"

Dev and Luka

Kaylessa looks surprised for a moment, and then regains her composure, "Compensation, right, completely skipped my mind. I, uh, well, we're a small township, so we don't have a whole lot to offer you in the way of coins. I'd be willing to give you and your compatriots rooms on the house, and if you manage to defeat the evil presence, I'll have a monetary compensation figured out upon your return. Is that fair? I can't promise anything, but I'm sure we could scrape at least forty gold or so together."

There is a brief knock at the door. Kaylessa opens it to see a young half-elf girl on the other side who says, "M'am, Mister Thelder sent me, he says he needs the noble's schedules for the next week."

"Tell Iraun I'll be with him shortly," replies Kaylessa pleasantly as she closes the door and returns to the two of you. "Will that be alright?"

"As far as my feet can take me from Winterfell," replies the man. "I lost my allies there, though most of them weren't bright enough to stay together during combat. They fell to a den of kobolds, and I was the only one to survive. Much like you being the sole survivor of a ship, I'm the last of my adventuring party. Stopped in Red Larch, haven't found a reason to leave yet. The name's Thirty-four. And yours?"
