Dev, Luka, and Obed

"Oh," says the women, "Traveling performers? I was really hoping you were adventurers when you said there were four more of you." She looks a bit crestfallen, but quickly recovers her smile and continues on. "So sorry about that, my name is Kaylessa Irkell, and I run this Inn. Luxury for travelers is our goal, and each room has a hearth, warm draperies and tapestries, and running water provided by our specialized rooftop cistern system. Try saying that five times fast! The topmost guest floor is a dormitory style where travelers can sleep for group rates in rooms shared with up to six guests, but the lower floors are divided into pleasant suites of guest rooms, each with its own garderobe. And as you see, we even have a dining room, though mostly for beverages. If you want a mean, across the street is The Helm at Highsun. It's an eyesore, but they serve good food."

Obed will arrive at this point, and you will see Kaylessa eye him with a bit of concern before smiling at Obed in her plastic and overly practiced way. It takes her a moment to regain her thoughts and continue on to Dev and Luka.

(if you look behind you when Obed arrives, you'll notice a ramshackle two-story building with rusted iron bars covering the windows before the door closes behind him)

"As for payment through services, you're more than welcome to use our dining room as your stage to drum up business and earn some coins, but I'm afraid I can't exchange entertainment for lodging," concludes Kaylessa.

Hexion, Kitar, and Iados

(ooc: assuming everyone is following Hexion since their characters said they were looking to him)

As the other three jaunt off to the Inn to find a room or grab a drink, you three head South along The Longest Road and deeper into the city. You'll pass Waelvur’s Wagonworks (16) on your left with Drouth Fine Poultry (10) on your right. Next you'll see a sign on your right that simply has the image of a large ham being sliced with a cleaver (11). On your left, past the sign with the ham you'll notice a building that has no sign, but there seems to be a large amount of weaponry if you look through the windows (13). Past that on your right side again is a plain square building is always coated in a graywhite shroud of rock dust, and through its windows you'll gleam samples of cut stone as well as “raw” samples, and one woman quickly carrying scrolls across the floor (12). As you near the edge of the town, a smell of animal fecal matter rises quickly from the last few shops, throwing a highly unpleasant tone over the area. A side road shoots off to your left that seems to connect back to the Cairn Road.

Near the end of the street (19) there sits a male human adult with five other young males, four human and one dwarven. His head picks up from the bowl of food he has cupped in his hands, and he eyes the three of you suspiciously. He calls out loudly, "Hey, don't forget to keep you pets on short leashes in here, we don't need no trouble!" The words seem to be aimed at Hexion, though there is room for interpretation. "If you need collars and leashes for them, just let me know and I'll make 'em for ya. 'Specially that featherbrain there, don't need it flappin' up our roofs and ****ing down our chimneys!" The five young males laugh nervously as they eye Iados with a good amount of caution.

(ooc: if any of the groupings are off and you thought you were going a different direction, let me know)

Obed frowns slightly at Kaylessa's words. "Entertainers, are we?" He turns to the woman and smiles confidently, "Can I get a drink, miss?

"Yes, yes of course," replies Kaylessa. "Right over here sir" She holds and open palm out, extending it towards the dining room to her left (your right). Stepping over that way, the female human who looks to be Tethyrian walks briskly over with a small piece of parchment in hand.

"Hello," she says brightly. "My name is Ghileeda, here's our listing of drinks, and feel free to sit wherever you like." She motions into the dining room where there are seven tables arranged in a loose circle around the room. Tapestries and curtains hang around the room, giving it a friendly and lived-in feeling. The floors are soft wood, and considering the town you're in, it's a bit of a surprise it's not a dirt floor with thresh. On the far side there is a small crackling fire that needs tending to before it goes out, the table second closest to the door on the left hand side sit the four patrons, quietly discussing something. Their conversation goes from low to a whisper as they notice Obed heading towards the dining room. There are six completely open tables to choose from going around the room.

The menu reads:

Ale by the Mug ..................... 6 copper pieces
Ale by the Gallon ................. 3 silver pieces
Wine by the pitcher .............. 3 silver pieces
Wine by the bottle ................ 12 gold pieces
Dwarven spirits by the cup ..... 1 silver piece
~~*~~*~~*~~*~~
Each drink comes with one loaf of bread, complementary.
No weapons are allowed to be drawn in the dining room.

Luka's ears perked up at the word "Adventurers." "We'll adventure. We adventure. We have the capacity to adventure. Why do you ask? Also, as long as I'm asking things, what are the rates for your rooms here?"

(ooc: I don't have my book at the moment, but I think the entertainer background is supposed to let me do the whole lodgings for performance thing (anybody with access to the PHB feel free to chime in :P), although either way it's not a big deal if they don't take background-benefit fun-bucks at this particular place anyway. Also out of curiosity does anybody have a problem with reading my text font before I get too accustomed to using it?).

Kitar quickly notices that no one in the group is really interested in his scout report, with all of them vainly wandering around the town and all that. "Fine, if no one wants to come, I'll go alone." He opens his wings thinking how majestic he must be looking to the commoners and takes off with a single beat. He flies high enough to avoid being easily detected and darts towards the open field and the half-orc.

Hexion and Iados

(some is recap, some is new conversation, please re-read thoroughly for your characters)

As the other three jaunt off to the Inn to find a room or grab a drink, you two head South along The Longest Road and deeper into the city.

He calls out loudly, "Hey, don't forget to keep you pet on a short leashe here, we don't need no trouble!" The words seem to be aimed at Hexion, though there is room for interpretation. "If you need a collar and leash for it, just let me know and I'll make 'em for ya. And don't forget to pick up after yer red cow there, ain't no reason we should have to step in his **** just because yer feelin' lazy!" The five young males laugh nervously as they eye Iados with a good amount of caution.

Obed

(assuming you sit down at a table)

Ghileeda will walk over and ask, "Is there anything I can get for you?" She bats her eyes a little and stands closer than strictly necessary, her perfume now noticeable and she leans forward, her hair mere inches from your face. It smells faintly like the sea, all saltwater and fresh breezes, a refreshing combination compared to the usual jasmine or other floral scents that most of the young women donned to get the attention of men in the other pubs. This scent is quite different, and very calming, like standing on a pier and staring out into the infinite sea. You'll find your mind wandering to thoughts of travel and the open roads and seas.

Kitar

Kitar

Kitar flies over the town, noting the shapes and sizes of the buildings below, and lowers his flight to be a bit more stealthy along the way. Once or twice he thinks he hears someone shout something, but he's moving a bit too quickly to make it out with the wind in his ears. As he reaches the open field, he sees in more detail the outhouses and rings of stones that were for fires of previous meals. At a best guess, this may either be a marketplace that's currently not in use, or a site for celebrations. Either way, only the half-orc seems to be there now. As you approach the area, the half-orc looks up and takes notice of you, and you can see his face twist into anger rapidly.

"DUMB BIRDY NO STEAL PICKLES!" the half-orc roars. He picks up several stones and begins to fling them at Kitar. None of them even get close, and on the last throw he falls over backwards with a very dumb and surprised look and lands in the dirt, rolling to his side. A look of shock is now plastered on his face.

Dev and Luka

At Luka's words the four people whispering in the dining room sit up a little straighter and focus their eyes on the pair at the door with Kaylessa. She quickly shoots them a reassuring smile and waves them off a little dismissively, and they turn back to their drinks and resume their conversation.

(ooc: a perception check could possibly let you know some of what they are saying, if it's high enough)

"What's that?" asks Kaylessa. "Of course, of course, we have plenty of unoccupied rooms here at The Swinging Sword! Please, follow me down the hall and I can show you one of our suites! For such an adorable couple, I'm sure you'd like one with a large bed!" She turns away and walks down the hallway briskly.

Obed smiles wistfully. "Ghileeda, Ghileeda, tell me, are you from here? You remind me of the sea, from whom I have spent too far a time. Come, sit. Which do you prefer, the ale or the wine? Let us share some drink."

Kitar quickly approaches the open field, regretting his decision to come now that he has a clear picture of how dumb the half-orc looks. Still, he decided to be a nice aarakocra for once in his life and try to talk with the bastard before dismissing him as an inferior creature and retort to violence. Maybe he can help, thought the Ranger. Until the rocks came. "Well, no Mr. Nice Kitar for you, sr." he said to himself as he evaded the rocks. Once the stupid creature threw itself in the mud, Kitar seized the opportunity to dive on him, treading on the half-orc's chest with force. As his prey fought for air, the aarakocra lowered his head to get the half-orc's attention. "I was going to be nice with you, but you decided for suffering. So you better answer me now who are you and what the hell you're doing alone in the middle of nowhere, because I won't mind dirtying my talons." As Kitar says the last few words, he press his talons against the half-orc's skin, not enough to actually cut it, but enough to hurt.

"The wine, of course," Ghileeda replies with a throaty laugh. "I'll go get some for you, though Kaylessa frowns on drinking while on the job, she says it's for common wenches." She slips out of the room and heads down the hallway, disappearing from view. The scent of her hair lingers momentarily, and as it fades, she's returning with a bottle of fine wine and a single wine glass. She places the glass down in front of you, and tips the deep red contents into the glass. "I can't drink, but I can stay and chat." She takes up a seat and leans in just enough so the faint scent of ocean is felt behind the smell of the red wine she's poured. "Tell me about yourself, who are you and where do you hail from? What brings you to our township, and how can I make your stay more comfortable?"

Kitar

The half-orc looks Kitar eye to eye, his a little hazy. "Dumb bird speaks? Dumb bird not after pickles?" The half-orc looks genuinely confused, and speaks slowly like each word is a struggle to place.

"G-get off of him," says a voice from behind you. There is the same old man Iados had scared off from earlier, and he seems to have come from one of the outhouses. "Grund hasn't done anything to you, s-s-so leave him be! He's a gentle soul, you monster!"

Kitar was ready to put some sense on the half-orc's head when he heard the voice behind him. He gets straight and starts talking to the man without turning to him. "You're wrong, old man. I just wanted to talk, but Grund here started throwing rocks at me before I even got a chance to say 'good morning'. A little too much for a gentle soul, don't you think?" As a showing of good faith, Kitar gets off of Grund with a step to the left and turns to face the old man. "See? I just want to talk without having to dodge rocks while doing that. Can we? My name is not monster, by that way. It's Kitar."

Kitar

Grund crawls away several paces before he slowly gets back onto his feet. During that time, the old man says, "He was just defending his pickles from scavenger birds, you can't blame him for thinking that. He's never seen one of your kind before, none of us have. We don't even know what kind of beast you are. Now why don't you leave him be? We have enough problems without travelers making more." He walks over to Grund and helps him finish standing up.

Grund looks at Kitar and puts a muddy finger to the corner of his mouth in a thinking pose. He then smiles widely and says, "Dumb Kitar want pickle?" He walks over to one of the tents set up by an outhouse and picks up a large wooden barrel with ease and carries it over to Kitar. Inside, you can see the brine for the pickles, as well as dozens if not more floating at the surface. Grund holds it out for Kitar, his smile never wavering.

Kitar smiles to Grund, grabs a pickle and bites a half before talking. "See Grund? Isn't that much better? Now why don't you tell your old friend over there that he can talk about those problems with no-dumb Kitar and maybe no-dumb Kitar can help." The aarakocra had enough experience interacting with stupid soldiers that this whole conversation was almost like a trip down to the memory lane.

The old man eyes Kitar suspiciously before saying, "It's probably best to talk to Harburk, he's the one whose been talking his damn jaw off about our troubles. He lives two houses behind the Butcher's shop along The Long Road."

Grund looks between the two as they talk. He places the half-barrel of pickles down inches from Kitar's feet. He reaches out to Kitar and grabs onto a single feather, pulls it out as hard as he can, and begins caressing it across his cheek with a look of contentment.

Noticing Kaylessa's reaction, Luka quickly and loudly added "So then the cobbler says 'Adventure? tell that to my wife.' Any thoughts on that? The punchline needs work but I've been stuck for a while. But yes, that would be most excellent, show us your finest rooms for resting and such..." Luka trailed off as she followed Kaylessa, dawdling a bit to see if she could eavesdrop on the conversation the others were having.

Iados follows alongside Hexion as the rogues wanders aimlessly south across the town. He glances at the stores and buildings they pass, most of them selling sundries of little interest though he does pause for a moment outside the armourer's to look over the weapons - though Hexion's continued wandering quickly pulls him away. The road continues on and the scent of manure envelops the pair - though the tiefling seems to barely notice. What he does notice however are the five simpletons who somehow think he is the perfect target for their jibes. Exactly why they have chosen a heavily armed demon-spawn to insult is beyond him though in this one regard they have been lucky. Iados simply turns towards Hex, ignoring the crowd. "We appear to be leaving the town limits. Perhaps another direction to wander is called for?"

"Come, a few sips can't hurt. It's hardly busy at the moment," smiles Obed. He knows his past success with tavern servers but he has little time or care for mortal women now. And he can't tell if it's his natural charm that has pulled Ghileeda or if she has ulterior motives. The minimal information that his Zhentarim contacts gave Obed did lead him to this region. Casually, he answers her questions, "I am Obed, a sailor by trade, little more. I am passing through with some companions, those two entertainers out there. There is nothing better than the freedom of open travel, even if it's not on the sea."

Hexion had opened his mouth to chide the dirty dog when Iados cut him off, indicating that they should leave. Disappointed at losing the opportunity to trade insults with the dirty dog, Hexion heaved a sigh, but soon comforted himself in that whatever enjoyment he might glean from the act would have been minor indeed.

"Very well, Red, back the way we came, then. You'll forgive me if we take the long way back," said Hexion, as he turned his back to the filthy group with a wink. "Or would you rather we stopped by the armorer's?"

Hexion and Iados

The five men will do nothing more to you except laugh and jeer as you turn to walk away. The sun has now crested in the sky and the afternoon will begin. In the distance, you'll hear some shouting coming from the North-East of you. It's too far to know what is being said, but you'll hear three voices, one of which is Kitar's.

Obed

"Sorry, but rules are rules," replies Ghileeda. "Kaylessa would kick me to the streets faster than you can blink if she caught me drinking her fine wine while working." She pours some more wine for Obed and slides her chair a little closer to his. "You're a long way from the ocean, and those two don't look like your type. How'd a sailor like yourself wind up in a dustball of a town like Red Larch?"

Obed

"The long road works fine for me. The armourer would be nice but I am a little short on coin at the moment. Perhaps another time." Iados gestures towards the road, allowing Hexion to take the lead, content to simply follow his steps.

That is of course until he hears the shouting from north-east. Or more accurately the screeching of Kitar's shrill bird-voice. "I should have known not to leave him alone. My apologies Hex - I'll have to go deal with whatever trouble the magpie has gotten into." The tiefling shrugs somewhat apologetically towards Hexion before turning and dashing in the direction of the voices, his grip tightening around his glaive as he runs.
