Another interesting tidbit: the top 8 of apex 2015 (the largest melee tournament ever) contained both a Pikachu player and Yoshi player. The winner of the tournament was a Marth player. So much for "everyone plays fox" right?

i played a lot of melee when i was younger and i played brawl a few times when i went to a friends house they are pretty much the same as far as i can tell

Brawl is honestly a better game all around than Melee. And just because people play the characters doesn't mean the roster is balanced. If people were to play a Madden tournament just because someone chose to play a team that didn't have the highest raw stats doesn't mean that the teams are balanced.

There is a reason the 20xx meme exists.

Maybe everyone should list the Smash games they're willing to play?
Realistically only Brawl and Smash 4 are doable since they actually have online play. Perhaps you could use emulators to play the other games online but not many people have them and not everyone's going to be okay with breaking the law.

I have Smash 4 for the 3DS and I'd be willing to play.

As for the relative merits of the Smash games:
n64 - Been a long time since I played so I can't comment on a lot of aspects. It was fun though.
Melee - Exceedingly good game feel, not terribly well balanced, frankly terrifying dexterity and skill requirements to play at a high level.
Brawl - Poor game feel (I can't be the only one who feels that the way characters move is just wrong), very poorly balanced, not a fan of the camera.
Smash 4 - Melee holds a special place in my heart but if I were to be objective this is probably the best all around smash game, great game feel (if you're playing on 3DS turn of control stick jumping), caters well to both casual and hardcore players

You can't even play brawl online anymore as far as I know, all the Wii and ds stuff has been shut down. So its smash 4 or emulators all the way.
