In order to help raise activity here, I'm going to start doing flavor analysis and discussion of random cards. Please chime in with your opinions and insights.

Today's random card is Justice.

I think the abilities fit well with the flavor of the card. In a way, it is sad that such a cool name got stuck on such an insignificant card. The art is cool, although it doesn't really say much.

What do you think?

I find it odd that Justice can only be enforced on Red things, and that Black get's a free pass. Like, c'mon, does Justice only really care about chaos? Does is turn a blind eye (ha) to things like exploitation and malign ambition?
Really like the color palette of the art, though. And the upkeep cost is actually kind of flavorful.

If anything, Black probably would have been more apropriate, given how White has an infamous history of opressing Red.

Sure, White would ignore exploitation and malign ambition if they are carried out in a way that doesn't break the Law. Chaos is a counterbalance to Law. Thus it is reasonable that White would oppress Red.

My wife just pointed out that the guy in the art looks like the villain from the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. Discuss.

Which villain? The only white haired one I can think of is Pegasus and this guys suit isn't nearly as fashionable.

And if the card was order I could see it opposing just red but being justice it should probably affect both of whites enemies.

I would like to mention, for the record, that Justice and Law are not always the same thing...

Did she mean Marick or Bakura? Possibly?

L'Oreal. Because I'm worth it.

I just had to say that.

No, she meant Pegasus. And it was mostly the hair and face, not the clothes.

He does remind me of Pegasus to some extent.

Spandex over bulging muscles with superfluous metal crest-things. Two different hair colours. I can't help but think that the outfit looks like something out of the superhero genre.
I definitely have to say that the flavour would indicate hating on black more than hating on red. Red's more likely to break the rules, but black's more likely to do cruel, unfair, unjust things.
Also I agree with the OP. It's a shame that such a cool name got used on a card like this.

Law is all about a given set of rules. If cruelty and unfairness, and anything that the unlawful perceive as being unjust are legal under the Law, this card wouldn't hate it.

But it all depends on your definition of Justice, because as has been explored in countless fiction, law and justice are not always the same.

Of course. I'm referring to the card we're discussing. If Law goes sour, one would consider Chaos a Just response.

Cards like this remind me of how some things weren't quite finalized in Magic's early years. The details of the colour pie, the finer points of flavour, saving good names for good cards were all a few years off.

Pretty much this. A lot of older cards quite honestly just confuse me.
