Gonna argue this one. A 5/4 that can be unblockable to one creature each turn is pretty solid. Toss on a Deviant Glee and suddenly that is a 7/5 that can trample for R. Stand alone, terrible card. Add auras to it and it brings some value. Not gonna run a fullset, but good as a singleton.

Let me try to explain a little better. This is an aggro card. If it were a 3 CMC 3/2 with the same ability, I'd think it was cool as hell. At 5 CMC, unhasted, it will just die. Even if it doesn't die, it still comes out after the game is over. By turn 5 aggro has won, control has stabilized, tokens has more than one blocker, etc... 5 CMC cards need to do something right away. Not next turn, because by then it's already too late. I'm not saying it has no use, I'm saying I'm pretty sure it will always be a card I could replace with something better.

For example, artful dodge is almost a strictly better way to make a creature unblockable. And that's a ridiculous thing to say. Lol.

Still, your getting a Wooly Thoctar that has the ability to dodge one creature turn. Again, not saying it is the best, but it isn't a junk card right away.

If it had haste, it would do something on the turn you played it, and pass my test. I'd run 3 then, at least in the right deck.

5/4 for 5 cmc that requires 3 colors isn't exactly good economy.

And the whole "can't block" thing seems wholly useless in the vast majority of matches.

Sure, it is a repeatable effect that can be triggered every turn, but it is also overall a pretty meh ability.

How often is it going to actually be relevant in a meta full of tokens and decks running cards like Visionary and Satyr Wayfinder?

If I wanted to play a dumb beater, I would prefer to be playing Woolly Thoctar. It has the same P/T, costs 2 less, and isn't any more or less difficult on a decks mana base to be able to cast. Even in decks where Roughrider is at its best it still doesn't really compare.

Someone mentioned hitting it with Deviant Glee to make it a 7/6 with pseudo Evasion. This is probably one of the better uses of the card. Even then, Thoctar often does the same thing but better. Nimbus Wings on Woolly Thoctar turns it into a 6/7 with Evasion, which isn't much worse than Roughrider, especially considering that it starts attacking in a full 2-3 turns before Roughrider does.

People also tend to forget that the ability requires attacking to trigger, which, due to what the ability does, usually doesn't pose much of a problem. It can certainly be a downside to the effect though. It isn't going to happen often, but there will be times when activating the ability means making bad attacks.

If I wanted an effect like that I would have much preferred something like Bellowing Tanglewurm, which has the potential to actually win games as soon as it hits the table.

The only hope I had of the card actually doing something was dashed the moment I noticed that its type was "Orc Warrior", I was really hoping it was a Beast and thus could be worked into some sort of weird Glint-Eye Beast tribal deck alongside Woolly Thoctar but alas, that dream is dead.

why not replace the gates for triands and run resounding thunder over tribute or reprisal?

and I would run -1 shock +1 banefire aswell

I cut the tapped lands, and now you can start turn one with any of your colours but you'll still want :w: on turn 2 and in most scenarios you can play any of your three drops on turn 3
as an aside I'm considering removing the agent of the fates, maybe I'll go back to truefire paladin if I do


I been testing with this list(with a couple of your proposed changes) and I find myself never having the right lands, especially when considering Agent and Brimaz and their double colour requirements. You may be getting a faster start by not using the Mardu tap land, but I've often found myself with a hand full of either black or red cards and a field full of plains and the other land that I can't use.

I am running the trilands?

I tried resounding thunder a lot when it first launched but over a large play sample I felt tribute was better in this particular list. I would say I would ALWAYS take resounding everywhere else.

I suppose the trilands over the gates could make it harder to predict me? the banefire over 1 shock could deff be a thing for sure and that is a change I could see viable. Though it does lower the odds of having what is needed vs faster decks which is always a concern.
