Recently, I read up about the Tomb of Horrors - looked through the S1 PDF file and a guy's custom-modified version for 4th edition. I DM a group of players irl.
Now don't get me wrong, I love my job. I love creating places, people, lore, drawing maps, building dungeons.

And I especially cannot wait until they hit level 11 and I get to bring out the Tomb of Horrors.

One of my players was around during 1e and the original Tomb of Horrors. I think he played it, not sure if he beat it. The rest of my group had hardly played D&D in their life before our group, and know nothing of the ToH. I positively cannot wait until they enter a false exit or go through the sphere of annihilation and realize, "Oh, this one is different."

But then I got to thinking, "Man, wouldn't it be fun to play through this?"

And then I realized.

I can never play the Tomb of Horrors.

Never. I will know how to beat it, I already know its secrets, and this saddens me immensely, because the Tomb of Horrors is all about puzzles and secrets. So I'm wondering. Will it still be fun to play? Did any of you play/DM it and then later forget it all, and if so how long did it take? A few months? A year? More?

Because I really want to get killed over and over, and I cannot, and this saddens me, in a twisted, creepy way that only D&D nerds can understand.

It depends on your memory. If you have permanent photographic memory, you are screwed.

I did read it too more than 10 years ago. I remember very little of it, 10 years was enough for me to forget enough of it.

It could still be fun if you force some kind of requirement onto yourself. I mean, you'll know what's coming, so maybe your character has to roll a dice to decide which way to go and he stumbles through traps and the like.

Thanks. I do have a good memory (though oddly, not for things like trigonometry -- weird), but I can already feel it begin to go into my recesses, at least. I don't have all the puzzle solutions, thankfully, but let's just say I won't be surprised when I get crushed against the ceiling...

I was never really a fan of puzzles in dungeons. They just always felt out of place to me.

Tomb of horrors is my favorite dungeon.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem.

The only advice I can give is find a DM who knows the Tomb well enough that he can comfortable edit the material without sacrificing the atmosphere to give you an original experience.

I usually just refuse to take the lead in situations like this. It's not the worst to just support your buddies for a week or two, although it may hamper the party to have a potatoe just sitting in the back if there are any puzzles.
