Hello guys.

I originally posted this in a thread for a game that had finished, but I was told it was probably better to put it here.

I feel bad about making a thread. I had preferred posting it in a general mafia chat thread or something, but I couldn't locate one. I hope this is okay, but if not I apologize and please of course feel free to delete it.

Invitation to The Mafia Championship Season 2

In 2013-2014 I hosted a Mafia Championship that featured more than 100 different players from more than 45 different werewolf/mafia communities. Each community chose their best player to represent them and they battled it out. The best players from the initial games advanced to a finale game where an ultimate winner was decided. The event was endorsed and supported by the creator of mafia himself (Dmitry Davidoff) who even offered to have a private chat with the ultimate winner. Overall it was a huge success and spawned many cross-over games between sites. I am hoping that you guys will want to participate in season 2 :)

If you are interested, I would need one representative to play on behalf of No Goblins Allowed. How you decide this representative is completely up to you.

Now, this part is important: You should of course be aiming to send one of your best players. But more important than that, that person needs to be able to participate adequately in terms of activity. Be prepared for up towards 500 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. More on the game format below.

The current plan for season 2

• 65 different communities will be represented.
• 1 player per community for the entire season (preferably).
• 5 qualifying games will be played with 13 players each.
• 2 players advance to the finale from each game based on post-game votes.
• 3 additional players are granted wildcard spots.

Game setup

The game will have a very basic mafia setup: 3 mafia members, 9 vanilla townies and 1 cop. The cop starts the game with a random vanilla townie peek. Roles revealed upon death.

Some communities are not very used to playing basic setups like this, but for the first season, we utilized a setup with a good share of power roles, so this time around we are trying something new. For season 3 we will switch it up again.

Days will last 36 hours and nights 12 hours, meaning 48 hours (2 days) per game day. With one exception: The weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will be one game day (so day will be 60 hours and night 12 hours on weekends). This means the game will last a maximum of 2 weeks.

Timeline

The first game is set to start April 6th. The other four games will take place in the 1-3 months after that. I will make a Doodle and find out the best times to start the 5 games so that preferably everyone gets to play during a time that suits them well.

In addition to this, it is also a priority to ensure as much as possible that all the players in any given game has no prior history of playing with each other to ensure a level playing field (but I cannot 100 % guarantee that this won’t happen).

Sounds like a cool thing. I fully support it, although I'm obviously not the best person to represent NGA because I suck >.<

Best players here are, IMO, GobO_Scarlet, 15377 (aka Numbers) and SeTiny, but those are only the top of my mind. We have a bunch of solid people around here.

It's pretty cool that our mafia community is getting recognition. I knew that a lot of people played the game, but I had no idea NGA was sort of, kind of, at least in the running for the closest thing there is to a mafia world championship.

Px2 was probably in the top 10 forum mafia communities (and probably closer to the top) in terms of size/activity, although it had varied across its lifespan. It died off gradually and some members ended up migrating here.

500 posts in 24 hours is an extremely fast paced game. I certainly couldn't handle it. Another thing to keep in mind is that this game format seems to be more akin to a popularity contest then to traditional mafia, since winning is determined by people voting on how well you play. Based on these two points, I'd choose someone who could post in high quantities and who has a powerful and positive presence.

I wonder what PK is up to

We should select someone who will insult everyone.

Nice idea.

The only thing that's keeping me from hopping on the 'want'-wagon (I wonder who remembers the Kantwagon) is the time for days and nights.
I like them a bit longer so I can properly analyze stuff (and because I have a full-time teaching job, and because I'm from EU so timezone shenanigans).
For the record: I don't sleep 12 hours, but combined sleep + work means I am only online 4-5 hours a day on weekdays)
So for now I'll pass.

But if others are interested, and it is more than 1, I could make a poll here.

There is a chance that I might do a Euro game, but that depends on whether or not 13 people out of the 65 participants end up being Euros :P

But yeah, the activity thing is huge. Hopefully at least one person from here would be able to manage it :)

PK would be great for it if they were still here.

honestly, I don't know if maybe our community is abnormally slow but I agree with Scar that a 48-hour day/night cycle is too short. I understand you want things to end quickly so as to keep things moving but I think forum mafia needs time to twist and turn, due to the non-contemporaneous nature of participation. I think the shortest I'd want is something like three-day day, one-day night.

I understand what you're saying. I guess the thing is that the dynamic and the players adapt to the environment. So longer games have very non-contemponareous (not spelled right) participation, but that usually isn't the case in these games, which is why the phases can also be faster. You will very often have multiple people posting at the same time and interacting in the thread in these types of games, allowing for there to be twists and turns in a shorter amount of time.

I don't know about abnormally, but I would say this community is slow. Then again I watched Px2 trend from day/night cycles being contained in a week or less to last minimum week and a half, but usually longer. I'm hard pressed to think of anybody here that would be capable/willing to keep up with such a high paced game, myself included (capable, not willing in my old mafia age). Nothing against the player base here (or there) but I've always seen Px2/NGA as more akin to a lazy beach bum than a hustle and bustle big city type.

His decline was not bold nor in color - so it does not count.

I'll keep an eye on the thread for one more day. If there still aren't any volunteers (which I would completely understand, it's a big commitment), I'll rescind the invitation and try to find another community, but hopefully you'd be able to participate in a future season :)

we appreciate the consideration. it's just we're currently a fairly small community (really we're the remnants of a much larger one from a different forum) and we've always generally had a fairly slow pace. well, not always, necessarily, but at least as long as I've been around, a week or two for a day cycle hasn't been abnormal.
