This thread is for an epic lightsaber/storytelling duel between myself and Mown, based off of a simple RPG designed by Tobias Radesäter.

One player is a Jedi Knight, the other is a Sith Lord. This, plus names and species of the characters, are the only details that are decided upon beforehand. The rest of the character history and relationship is decided by the players as the game goes on.

Each player starts with 25 Combat Points. The Jedi knight starts with 4 Force Points, the Sith with 3 Force points.

Each round, the winner of the previous round chooses a combat strategy. This cannot be the same strategy as the last round, or the same as the last time that player chose.

Each player secretly bets a number of Combat Points which cannot be higher than the current round number (I would call zero an acceptable bet, but I’m willing to change that). Working under the assumption that neither of us will cheat, I’d say the best way to that is in a spoiler block in a post in this thread.

Once both players have placed their bets, they each post an appropriate dice roll, adding their bet and any other bonuses as described by the strategy. At this point, either player can spend a Force Point to reroll any one die, their own or the opponent’s. They then resolve the round, with the highest scoring player winning the round.

The loser writes a snippet in the IC thread about a previous encounter between the two characters, as specified by the strategy for the round. They are free to write it any way they see fit, however the other player does have the final say in any actions taken by their character. Then, the winner of the round makes a write up of how the round played out in the duel, incorporating the characters’ memories of the described flashback.

This continues until either one or both players run out of Combat Points (at which point their character gets killed; if they both run out at the same time they kill each other), or the Jedi would have to lose Force Points when he doesn't have any (at which point he falls and joins his former opponent on the Dark Side). Then the loser writes up the scene that led up to this final confrontation, and the winner writes the conclusion to the duel, including an epilogue if appropriate.

I'm playing a Male Nautolan Jedi Knight named Tress Zendor.

Mown, who is your Sith Lord?

I've loved the Jawa ever since I've seen them, but that sounds unreasonably silly, so I'm just going to be a boring human since I know basically no culture. Say, female, for some variety and romantic drama
I'm terribly with names, but thankfully I have half of it filled out already. Let's go with.... Darth Malus.

How do we do storytelling? I kind of want to have it be the characters retelling it as they fight, even though such things only happens in movies.

I was thinking third person flashbacks. Basically, something like this:

Tress thought back to the time he and Malus met on Naboo. She had been involved with an uprising among the Gungans, and Tress had been sent to investigate...

Also, it would be cool if you could come up with your name from before you became a Sith Lord, because I like the dynamic of one character insisting on calling the other by a name they don't want to hear anymore.

Anyway, here's the first Round strategy. We can wait with deciding on the exact storytelling until we actually need to write something.

Round 1: INTRODUCTION
Battle: Die + bet against die + bet
The winner: No effect
The loser: Loses their investment
Description: The loser must describe how the conflict
between the two warriors started.
Special note: This strategy is automatically selected for the first round in each duel and may not subsequently be selected.

My bet (no peeking)

Having agency over other people's characters makes me feel so filthy, while a conversation would be subject to ambiguity. Eh, maybe I can frame it from the point of my character.

As for legitimate name...

It seems you won. (Also I'll do roll + bet in one post, because I see little incentive not to.)

Did you bet zero?

Anyway, I should still roll, just to keep things proper.

Aaarrrgh rolled 1d6+1 and got a total of 7:
6

Well, even with having agency over each other's characters, we retain some power of protest. Especially when it comes to dialogue.

Edit: Boom, I really did win. A lot.

I did.

Ok, so, I describe the past and then you describe the present, is that how it is?

Yup. So, why do we hate each other?

Do you want any say in this before I go ahead? Preferences of sorts? I'll try to leave it somewhat to interpretation.

Nah, I had some ideas, but I'm fine with you doing this. Cooperative story telling is exciting!

Eh, I'm going to go with something extremely open-ended. Partially because I like passing agency, but also because I'm having massive writer's block.
I'm probably just going to make scenarios and then you can choose however you think you would react. I think the (current) plans for my character can work either way, and if it doesn't well, that's to be expected.
Edit: Actually this thing feels very short. I'll see if I can make up some pretentious poem by tomorrow.

oh god my writing is so cheesy and obtuse.
This is why I like conversations. I don't go into tryhard mode.

Yeah, that was slightly confusing... Was that the moment your character broke and went to the dark side? If so, it doesn't explain the conflict between us, which we sort of need to do.

The intent was to make it open to interpretation. I can give you one way to read it, if you want to, but it's intentionally obscure.
Although it makes the assumption that you read the letter, and that I am in some way involved in the scene.

Okay, let's move this along:

Round 2: MASTER'S ADVICE
Battle: Die + bet against die + bet + 2
The winner: No effect
The loser: loses his bet + 1
Description: The loser must describe how the person who chose this strategy got advice from his master which helped him in the conflict.
Special: If you choose this strategy, gain a Force Point.

That was surprisingly in-line with my framework.
Kind of surprised you didn't go with The Light Side of the Force, unless you're just trying to block me from taking it. (I can't help but think this game is weighted in you favor.)
