GJ-bu never did much for me other than instill a lot of jealousy.
The characters felt a bit flat, I think. At least Kirara did.

Maybe i'm not the target audience or i missed something, but wasn't that the intent / design decision they went with?

The show didn't have anything else other than atmosphere, so I doubt it. It was for the most part just Kirara going "hurr meat" all the time that bothered me, at least the other people felt human, even if I can't remember much about them (pink makes tea, orange is her sister, green likes candy and has same VA as dekomori, purple plays chess and is best girl.)

..... From watching the first episode, that seems like the intent in a nutshell. Doesn't even seem to be trying for the minimal amount of story provided by something like Squid Girl.

As far as Kirara, she's the cat girl with actual fangs who likes meat. Makes total sense.

In GJ-bu all girls are best girl.
You just have favorites.

After binging on the entire series in one sitting, I'm going to go with @Mown not the target audience possibly.

They probably won't have a second season because half of the characters graduate from the school in question in the last episode. That shows lack of intent to continue said show.

Reminds me of K-On, I am probably never gonna get a season based on their college days.

It's a LN-series originally and there is a spinoff based around the GJ-bu club of the 3 sisters.

So, Great Teacher Onizuka is beautiful. Why aren't more anime about teachers who are blatantly unfit to teach? Or maybe the real question is why don't most school anime even bother to have teachers that matter?

Because sometimes having a Sawako Yamanaka can get pretty awkward.

I watched K.
I liked it.
A movie apparently came out in July last year, but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

I'd say it's because teachers kind of, don't really matter? They're most prominent during lectures, which is a part of school life that isn't all that interesting to watch.

My perspective is probably slightly skewed, but it's more a recognition, at least to me, of something that is missing. Whether it's a world, a plot, or merely a cast, an obvious hole tends to break the suspension of disbelief and makes everything less credible. I'm not saying every anime deserves its own Onizuka, but why even use the school setting if you're not going to bother fleshing out the school to some basic extent. We don't have to constantly acknowledge the fact there are teachers, but a nod in the direction that they are characters in this world would be nice.

Does Madoka have sufficient teacher exposition?

As for why they use school settings, my guess would be; Familiar environment for the audience and writers, a vehicle for character interaction, or maybe the industry is just stale. Honestly though, I don't really mind that Kyokai no Kanata is set in a high school setting but literally only shows 4 of the characters that go there (maybe there's someone in the background at some point that escapes me.)

Madoka had the running joke where the teacher was really happy, really lonely, or really really anti-man depending on her relationship status. But that was it.

That was the basis for my question, yes.

I think K has overthrown Guilty Crown as my favorite "Style over Substance" anime.
Patema Inverted was cool as well, although the interpretation of acceleration was a little sketchy.
Working my way through Kino no Tabi because I feel like I owe it to cato, but I'm just not feeling the appeal.

K was actually decent enough for what it was. You could watch it and enjoy the show and at times think "eh, this story is ok".

Guilty Crown was the anime trainwreck from hell that was going to go on a downward spiral **** it whether you wanted it too or not.
