Darkest Dungeon by Red Hook Studios

"Darkness is insidious. Terror and madness can find cracks in the the sturdiest of armor, the most resolute of minds."

Hey everyone, check out this gothic themed dungeoncrawl RPG that's currently smashing its way through its Kickstarter goals. It's a turn based system that plays on the trauma and psychological damages of adventuring into the depths of an enemy-filled labyrinth of a dungeon. They're looking to initially release on Steam, then Mac, and would like to get versions out to other platforms as well.

Heres a few gameplay gifs for those who havent gone over to the Kickstart page yet:

I absolutely love the gothic-y , graphic novel-y, style art and looking forward to finding out more about the plot and storyline. What do you guys think?

I thought the first half of the trailer looked cool, and I thought the overall story they are going for looks cool.

But the gameplay looks really...... shallow, albeit dramatic-ish.

How so? Doesn't seem to look any more shallow than say... basically any turn-based J-RPG ever. Except that unlike them there's character personality development, more varied classes / gear / item combinations at allow for a more diverse playthrough as well as better replay value. As well as a better stressing of combat order and use of varied abilities like area of effect and damage over timer rather than simply spamming whatever hits the hardest. From what I can see a far better use of risk vs reward to keep people from simply turning the game into a grindfest of killing easier stuff over and over like you'd find in say Pokemon or Final Fantasy. And the crowquill art and diablo-like lore make it all the more appealing.

Did you read through the whole kickstarter? Or are you simply basing that opinion off watching the one video ?

By gameplay I meant what they've shown of the actual battles. And yes I read the kickstarter. After some thought I'll probably consider getting it at a later date, depending on which goal they reach and what platforms it ends up on. The $350,000 looks like the most important goal they have yet to reach other than the half a million one.

It does seem pretty cool. I like the 'sanity' (stress) being more than just another meter to maintain, which is often how it is used in games.

I was thinking about it, even though they've obviously met their goal a lot of the other goals look interesting...and I wouldn't mind having the game for realsies.

I'm torn between helping, and waiting till a Steam sale.

It seems like the game won't be out for like a year+, so I feel reluctant to pay now.

Such is the case of the matter with a lot of Kickstarters.

So I have gotten like weirdly excited about this game in the past weeks so I told myself I will prepurchase when I get a job and at least get the early access. Maybe other rewards too like art book.

I've kind of learned that rogue lites are really good on the ps vita, so I'll probably get this for that when that comes out. Not sure if I'll like it or not, but the number of games I want at all in 2015 is exponentially shrinking so i can afford to waste 10% of my budget one month if it comes to that. I'm sure it'll be better than that though.
