The secret is magic - specifically Lolth flipping the square cubed law off. That or the spiders are all filled with helium (which would explain why the flipped out when the wagon tumbled).

The spiders are actually puppets manipulated by thousands of small spiders on the inside.

You spot a few here and there, but they all appear to be underground races (Deuregar and a small smattering of deep gnomes).

Also @Garren: I don't believe it's really the intended function to have a constant detect evil, since it still requires concentration. If you want to role play as absent minded, I guess I could give it to you, but expect me not to give the benefit of the doubt on circumstances where you might overlook something.
