"In times of peace, the statue traveled with the court. When the emperor moved to the next capital, the statue would simply be among the many religious artifacts that traveled with his retinue of priests. Now that the government is gone, the teleportation circles have fallen silent. We priests of the imperial family have since relied on whatever resources we are able to pull together."
Hozi moves his hands and arms in a shrug. "Priests from the Southern Capital were able to move quickly up the river here, but the southern priests were always greater combatants than we in the Western Capital and their journey much shorter. We do not have great spellcraft or warrior monks, simply the wealth dedicated to the care of the honored dead.
"This is the first time we have had to send the statue on since the war. When the Yizong Emperor, may his shen be honored among the heavens, passed, the statue was already in Gusing."
Liu Xin History
When the Yishen Emperor, the first emperor of the Yi Dynasty, was building support for his ascension to the imperial throne, he had met with the governess of the Hu Province, important for its silk production. As he had overseen the investigations, trials, and purges of the corrupt Faa government, he was responsible for the disgracing and/or executions of some of her friends and/or allies. Though she was personally exonerated of any intentional wrongdoing, she was still reluctant to support this man. In the middle of their courtyard discussion, Yi began to spontaneously perform a poem in admiration of a songbird that had alighted onto a branch nearby. Seeing the man's appreciation for her home province's forest beauty, the Hu governess was won over.
The songbird is not a common symbol of the Yi Dynasty at all, but it is easy to see why a statue of a bird, in memory of this historical moment, may be used to honor the descendants of the Yishen Emperor.
Liu Xin Reigion
Although Liu Xin had never heard of this particular practice, Jin is a large empire and local religious quirks and variants are to be expected. It is entirely possible that a small imperial temple priesthood, which would have had little interaction with outsiders besides Yi family members and their attendants, have developed customs that are unique to themselves and are relatively obscure from the general populace.
Liu Xin Perception
Hozi's breathing seems even and his hands are steady. The man's green robes seem a little worn, particularly around the knees, though the gold cloth over his shoulders almost glimmers in the well-lit room. His face seems more aged than the rest of him, cracked with wrinkles while his hair is still dark and his hands are smooth.

Liu Xin nods. "I see, just a few more questions from me then. These teleportation circles you speak of, do you or anyone you know, know of a way to activate them? It would seem to be a much quicker and safer method of transportation than by foot. Finally, do you know where we could find provisions in this city. We exhausted much of our supplies in the journey here and would do well to restock before we leave."
"Think of teleportation circles as locked gates. The teleportation circle may exist but we do not have the power to open the gate for you. It is powerful arcane magic that is not easily found for hire.
"As for supplies, we have stores of food that will last on the road. You are free to take what you can carry. The city itself is otherwise low on merchants, though there is an alchemist you may speak to and a vendor of spiritual goods you may find useful. Their shops will be closed at this hour, but you may sleep here tonight and one of our brethren will show you the way in the morning.
"You will be better served by heading to the town a little down the river. They deal with the general public more than our necropolis and will probably have the supplies you require."

DS what time was it roughly when we were entering the temple? Is night rapidly approaching or could we get at least a few miles travel done if we were to set off in the immediate future?

Hon Yin's mind wanders, thinking to the path ahead of them. He can't help but smile to himself - it's certainly a welcome change to be undertaking a holy pilgrimage after a year of fighting in the west. Leaning again on his spear he half listens as his companions question Hozi confidant that they will learn all that is needed without his input. Instead he inspects the temple, admiring the care and hard work that must have gone into constructing the place.

"I had a sending with the head priest at the Temple to the Yi Dynasty three days ago. My fellow priests here also know, of course. The priests at all of the temples to Yi would be aware of the statue's need to move, but they wouldn't know the specifics, unless Meifu at the temple in Gusing told them, but she wouldn't."
Chen Wu History
Gusing is the Northern Capital of the Jin Empire. It is somewhere to the northeast of here, probably.
Sai Investigation
On foot, you all can probably cover twenty-four miles a day at a steady pace and with sufficient rest. If it's two thousand miles from the western mountains of Jin to the eastern coast, that's...a lot of days.
Sai Insight
Hozi seems genuine in his sense of trust and urgency. He needs this statue to get to Gusing.
Wu Hon Yin
Hon Yin's eyes wander around the shrine room. The walls are decorated with tapestries depicting men and women in armor or magisterial robes, accomplishing one deed or another. The braziers burn brightly. Ahead, the shrine consists of a large golden statue of the First Emperor on a throne. In this depiction, he has only two arms, one held up in a hand symbol of protection and the other holding a jade tablet. His long hair is pinned up under a crown and his beard flows down to his sitting knees. Around him are a few more statues of some notable Yi, and all around them are the many stone tablets claiming the name, honors, and years of life of the Yi ancestors buried beneath the temple. In front of each is a small pot for still-smoking incense and a lit candle. The entire display is set on a dais, about three feet from the back wall.

Sai closes his eyes and does some back of the hand calculations. "If we're on foot, three moons should be just enough to get us there. I think we can cut some time off, but I'd rather not burden you and your brothers with such trifles as a hypothetical itinerary.
"I am honored to be part of this undertaking. I agree with my comrade, Hon Yin. We will see this through without fail."
Hozi nods, "Good, good. Are there any other—" A loud knock rings out through the shrine room. The two priests' heads swing to look at the temple doors in shock. As the echo of the knock fades, the thick doors begin to groan as some force repeatedly presses in on them. The second priest from before runs into the receiving room and examines the doors before crying out, "The ward is dead!"
Hozi immediately thrusts the bird statue into the hands of whomever is closest to him "You must go! I-Cho will show you to the tombs. Just follow them down and there is a secret exit that will release you near the river. We will hold these intruders off!"
The priest holding the box of treasures snaps the lid shut and thrusts it into the arms of another. He dashes to behind the shrine dais and seems to struggle with something. Hozi hisses again, "Follow him!"
"But don't forget your boots!" calls the third priest as he comes in with everyone's footwear in his arms. The door continues to groan and strain against the wooden bar.
Please decide who is holding the bird statue and who is holding the box of money.
As Liu Xin catches up to the priest, whatever he was fiddling with gives way and a slim passage opens in the back wall. I-Cho waves Liu Xin on, "Come, you must hurry. The statue must be protected!"

Sai awkwardly finds himself in possession of their payment. Looking back towards the entrance as if about to fight, the mission finally takes over and he quickly scoops up his robes, wraps them around the small box of coins, scoops up his boots and dashes for the entrance with his unworn clothes tucked under his arm.
As soon as the passage is open, he ducks inside, letting his eyes adjust to the change in light.

No sooner had the first reverberating thump rung out through the temple then Hon Yin had braced his spear towards the doors, prayer on his lips, ready at a moments notice to invoke the wrath of the shen. When Hozi shouts his commands the young priest freezes, finding himself torn between his duty to the faith, his companions and his word. Eventually, reluctantly, he lowers his weapon and turns towards the secret passage.
"Don't die here Hozi! The shen will persist without the temple so long as the faithful survive. Hold out only as long as you need to then escape." With a final look at the grand temple he plunges into the darkness of the passage.

As Sai Yun and Wu Hon Yin plunged into the dark hall, they see their silhouettes cast against the floor by the light of the shrine room behind. In the dim light, they see that the wood floor goes ahead about fifteen more feet before becoming dark steps downward. The walls are wood paneling like the rest of the temple, but the hall has a dank feeling about it.
Sai Yun
Sai Yun's eyes adjust more to the dark hall than his human companion's. The hall is mundane, like the rest of the temple, but chillier. The steps ahead are stone, as the wood flooring ends.

With the safety of the passageway now discernible, Liu Xin steals the chance to look back at what is causing the commotion at the doors, drawing his hood over his face as he does so in case there is a chance he will be recognized.
Chen Wu remains in the center of the group, looking back from time to time, his right hand as close to the gun as he would dare without giving away its existence to potential enemies.

As the entire group moves into the dark hall, I-Cho hisses, "Be careful. Don't disturb the tags!" The wall moves back into place, and the hall plunges back into darkness. The human mercenaries can't see anything in the dark, though the wall behind them glows lightly with the light from the shrine room.
At the same time, a loud crashing sound comes from back in the temple proper. "Who are you, to disturb this sacred place! The gods will condemn your souls to starve in mud for this sacrilege!" cries out Hozi's voice.
Sai Yun Stealth
Sai Yun creeps forward with complete silence, such that even his human fellows lose track of him. As the secret door closes, his eyes catch the little light available and the darkness falls into gray relief. When he reaches the end of the hall, he sees that the wood flooring ends and stone steps descend down in a spiral. Recessed into the wall along the way are little inset ledges, holding unlit candle stubs.
Liu Xin Perception
Liu Xin tries his best to listen in on the commotion outside. "Give it to us!" demands a gruff voice. Sounds of struggle, footsteps. "What do you want?" answers I-Cho. The sound of rushing wind suddenly picks up and then fades. "You know what you have."
