I think you could hack Don't Rest Your Head for that.

Oh, I bought a pdf of that.
I need to read it sometimes, it sounded awesome.

Don't Rest Your Head was pretty awesome, primarily for the conflict resolution mechanic. Although I knew that already. I would need to make something more centered around human interaction and longer play for my idea though.
Oh and anything but D20 Modern. I really dislike that system. A lot of little things about it rub me wrong.

:chairhit:

Does D20 Modern have any redeeming qualities? Under what circumstances would I use it?

I was asking in general. Although if you want an answer to the question, then I suppose it's inspiration.

Well, it goes form the traditional Thief is a thief is a thief thinking that 3.0/3.5 had and instead went with a class and be used for any idea with in the game rules which are limited. The classes are more Ideas then actual roles.

Currently there's a number of other systems that you'd admittedly want to use for a game set in the present. (hopefully they will bring back d20 modern using 5e rules)

I mainly stick to it cuz it's what I know and I enjoy it. It's also easy to pick up since it's based on the 3.0/3.5 rules set.

I'm sorry, but this is not an actual sentence.

But aren't new things fuuun? This might just be the cynic of /tg/ in me talking, but it feels like d20 players have such problems trying new things, despite how many cool systems there are out there. d20 modern just punctuates this, despite how the 3.5 ruleset really doesn't translate well to a modern setting. It hinges too much of magic and fantasy. I mean, I'm sure it's "ok", but I don't see why you would hack a high-fantasy class based rpg about dungeon crawling into the modern world. The conflict resolution system of d20 has never been its strong point, so where exactly is the appeal?

I disagree since it made sense in my head...with D&D at least 3.0/3.5 a fighter was well a fighter..he couldn't steal things or talk people down very well...

Well d20 modern striped away the magic and dungeon crawling from D&D, which is what i was looking for at the time and I knew D&D since that's what i had been playing. I'm sure if i had cut my teeth on GURPS i'd be all over it, but i didn't. I'm also still not 80% comfy with GURPS either mainly due to a lack of premade stuff and support like d20 Modern got.

I personally don't have a problem with trying new things, I just have to get comfy with them before I chose to run them myself. Honestly, If i had the time, i'd more totally willing to run a GURPS IW game..but with me getting ready to move and such, and finding people to play it on here.

I've ran a number of different settings IRL and played in different ones as well......but simply due to reasons already stated I enjoy running and playing D20 Modern.

Double Cross is a Japanese RPG about mutants with superpowers. The more you use your superpowers, or the more you give into your emotional Impulse, the more mutated and deranged you become. This means that you have to go through weird conspiracies, faction wars, and things that superpowered characters have to deal with, all while relying on human contact to preserve your sanity. The rulebook is a little obtuse because of Japanese terminology but it could be the system you're looking for.

Magical Burst is a free RPG that emulates a certain well-known deconstruction of the magical girl genre. Your character is a girl who fights evil with her magic powers, but the more you use your powers, the more weird mutations happen to you and ruin your life, and the closer you come to becoming a monster yourself. The game can be cheesy because of the source material, but I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to hack the mechanics into something that would work for your game. As a bonus, it comes with awesome monster generation tables.

Mythender is a very high-powered system where your party of characters goes around the world killing evil and uncaring gods. The catch is that the very power which allows you to kill gods is itself a spark of divinity, so if you lose touch with your human side, you become a god and your former allies have to take you down. The gameplay switches between touching downtime scenes where you interact with common mortals, and incredibly metal and over-the-top DBZ-style fight scenes. The game even comes with a guide to hacking it and changing the setting for your own group.

I don't like Double Cross for several reasons. First of all, I can't wrap around how to run the game, the whole scene thing. I can't quite remember what, but there's something off about it. Secondly, powers are specific instead of general, like DRYH or Fate. Thirdly, my biggest beef with it is that nearly every power is entirely centered around combat in some fashion, mostly dealing damage. The theme of the game isn't too far off though.

I know a little about Magical Burst, mostly that it has a great random character generator, and rumors about the combat mechanic being a little off. And that it's based on Madoka Magica. I've read one edition of the rulebook at some point.

Never heard about Mythender. Wild power fluctuations isn't too far off from how I envision the game, although the high-end scenarios should be rare and very important.

I'll see if I get some inspiration out of them though. I really liked Don't Rest Your Head's push your luck style madness dice.

I'm going to try and make a 438-entry long table for Wild Magic results for 5E, basing the results on tarot cards and the school of magic, because the core one is boring and dumb.
I might just make it 74 and not care about the schools of magic for the first iteration.

...so I'm in the process of home-brewing some races and factions for 5th Edition Planescape. I'm about 90% complete with Genasi but can't find a level appropriate spell for Water Genasi. Remembering Wizards recently released an 'Elemental Evil Players Companion' I booted that up looking for new spells - only to find out they have already done rules for Genasi. Well that's an hour and a half I'm not getting back! Thanks a lot Wizards!

Humorously I had the same issue with Aasimar but remembered they had been put in the DMG a lot sooner and didn't mind so much since Aasimar took like 10 minutes to write up anyway. Literally just reverse tieflings.

On the upside they added aarakocra as player races which included how they are handling natural weapons and gave me a starting point in my 'flying on a base race isn't broken' argument - if only by pointing at Wizards and saying 'they did it first!'

Running my first Module, hopefully it'll go better than my Sandboxes.

It's actually been pretty fun so far. I mean, I'm not as much a fan of doing a module instead of an open world game, but as far as running it, it's not bad. I'm enjoying the experience, though it has been a while and we're still a ways out from any combat. Unless Iados picks a fight.

Mythender sounds very appealing to me. Man vs god and interpantheon wars have always intrigued me, and my recent consumption spike in shonen anime has left me with a taste for the ridiculously over the top and over the top ridiculousness.

Not quite what you are looking for, but there is an Evangelion RPG which struck me as hella amusing.

Apropos of nothing, I'd like to give a shout out to Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine which may be the closest the world has ever come to realizing my dream of a school-based RPG. It is also ridiculously adaptable, and incredibly meta.

Since this is the off-topic tavern and all, I thought I'd take a moment to drop completely off-topic and mention that I am running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for my musical theatre group to put on the sequel to our original and most popular show - Fandom Hearts 2, A Kingdom Hearts Parody Musical.

So, if you like Kingdom Hearts, or Musicals, or watching videos on youtube of a bunch of hilarious geeks in costumes, then head on over to http://fandomhearts2.com and back our Kickstarter. Even if you only throw us $1, and maybe get five of your friends to do the same, that's a small amount of change out of your pocket which will help us tremendously in the long run. And if you can't back us, help us out by sharing the project and convincing your friends to back us instead! We've got some pretty cool rewards lined up and on top of all that the finished musical will eventually go up online for everyone to watch for free, so even if you don't live in Toronto you'll still get a chance to see this awesome show.

Check it out! At the very least, it's worth backing simply because you think I'm a cool guy and worth supporting in my crazy endeavours. :P

Image

If you want to see the original Fandom Hearts, the full show is available for free on our YouTube Channel. Have a look:

Disclaimer: It's important to mention that Fandom Musicals is an amateur not-for-profit theatre company. All proceeds raised by the Kickstarter go towards funding the production, and not lining our wallets. Furthermore, Kickstarter doesn't actually sell anything (see their Terms of Service for details), rewards for donations are not purchases, they are gifts given as thanks to people who pledge and donate. This is a creative project which I have a personal stake in. My advertising it does not violate the NGA Code of Conduct Section 4. I have a thread in the off-topic room of the NGA Community, but I wanted to also post here since most of my friends know me from the PBP area of the site. Also, it has been statistically proven by real scientific guys that advertisements which have small print disclaimers are less likely to offend the general public, especially if such disclaimers include a witty rhetorical remark at the end about how funny seagulls look when fighting over a french fry or something like that. Why are you reading this anyway? Nobody reads fine print. Stop reading this and go back my Kickstarter cuz I worked hard on it. Thanks!

Ask me more over here:

Yeah. Wish I had someway to pass a little money on to you.

Best I can do is spread the word, and hope to meet a kingdom hearts fan or two... Wait. Might know some or at least someone who can spread the word better than I can.

Spreading the word is sometimes even more effective than donating money. If you convince 10 people to each donate $5, that's ten times better than if you simply donated $5 yourself. :P Thanks for your support.
