I'm gonna build a Dragonborn Paladin if that's fine. I'm still new to 5e, so it'll take me a while to get used to it, but once I get used to it, it should be a breeze.

First post coming soon. The first poster may react to it. Subsequent posters should describe what others can see and their battle to consciousness. From there, let the game begin!

Players can act when they want. Dwarves have used their surprise round and will be reloading. All PCs will act before they are able to fire again or take another action.

So the way I understand it there are four towers of which two are occupied by dwarves which flank the gate. The other two flank the 20 ft. tall gate and are unoccupied. The others have run into one of the towers flanking the gate, he has run into the one on the same side of the square in the back. Please correct me if I am incorrect.

Think of one line segment with two towers in the center around a midpoint gate, and one tower on each end. Each the end towers serves as a vertex to each of the side walls. These two Ru. To the fourth side which is a sheer cliff wall with no towers. Feel free to edit accordingly.

A quick question on heavy crossbows. Does it take an action to load them? I was looking at the loading rules and it does not appear to do so to me but I would like to hear the DMs take.

From RAW no you no longer need to reload crossbows as a separate action - though you can never milk more than one attack out of them per round.

Of course the DM might change this but that is his prerogative.

How far is it from the doorway to the ladder, then how high up is the ladder? The dwarf is at the top of the ladder, right?

Edit: JK, the trap door is closed. I was going to have Ming-Na dash up the ladder, grab the dwarf, and pull him down into the room after her.

Heavy crossbows are now one shot per round but historically speaking crossbows as described could punch through full plate so I'm calling these as extra damaging but (fortunately for our fearless party) slower versions. You certainly wouldn't want these for hand to hand fights but from a defensible position, maybe... Anyone who makes an intuition DC 10 check (no need to post; honor system roll) might note that given the reload property, there probably should be more dwarves atop the walls...as reloaders or relief shooters.
