How would you tell if a picture was animated or not?

It would have to be the equivalent of letting you turn them off on a case by case basis most likely.

Just tested it and it works for me. Of course it would only be while I'm on this computer.

Right click an image and select 'Block Element'. It can be used on someone's avatar, an image in their sig, or even animated smilies and the like.

Seems you were right. I didn't refresh after I tested, so it only removed the avatar from a specific post.

Just check if it's a .gif.
Sorry, upon rereading, I realize I wasn't making myself clear.

I mean, if it is possible to integrate using the forum's software to have an option for each user to be able to display/block animated avatars at their own discretion; like, a single On/Off switch for whether a user is shown animated avatars. I don't have any issues with anyone's avatars currently, but if such an option were given to users, I think it would be a good idea to integrate it.

No, I understood you perfectly.
I did some minor research, and it seemed like the options were either to store a separate .jpeg of every .gif that users upload, or use some javascript thing that lacks IE8 compatibility, but who cares about IE users.
I just personally see adblock as a better method, unless you also want the same feature for signatures as well. And razorborne's constant dueling.

Huh. Well alrighty then.

Doesn't mean people aren't still using 8, but I don't understand how people can put up with IE anymore.

The doubling of every avatar doesn't sound like an ideal solution, but I suppose you could just make the option make users with .gif avatars look as if they don't have any. Buuuuuuuut, since .gif =/= animated, that seems like an unneeded scattershot answer as well. I don't have any programming experience to suggest anything, though.

As the person who will end up implementing all of this I definitely favor the Adblock method. :D

Unfortunately I don't want people to upload a non-animated gif and then be unhappy when it doesn't work. Plus there are a bunch of people who have non-animated gif avatars already.

I guess that when someone uploads a gif avatar we could parse out whether it's animated or not (this is easy enough, just look for frames with delay > 0) and set a flag saying "oy, this is animated". Then when displaying avatars don't show flagged ones to people that have requested not to see them, or just show the first frame, or whatever.

That ends up being a fair amount of work though, both programming- and server-wise. And given that there is approximately one user with an animated avatar, it's really not worth it.

So, my recommendation is to use Adblock if you object to an avatar or signature or :duel: or something; if it's really obnoxious, go ahead and let a mod know via PM or by reporting it.

Wait so, before avatars couldn't have animated gifs right? Didn't you have to turn it on?

No?

We have some control over avatar settings (dimensions, size in bytes, file types), and some of those are related to animated-ness, but there's nothing so fine-grained as "gifs that are animated".

Strange. I'm used to animated gifs not working as avatars, so I thought it was a thing. You could check for if an image has frames though, but the whole method for turning that off on a person by person basis seems madness. Oh maybe there's a grease monkey script for it somewhere.

Works On My Machine™.

[edit] OK I guess I can be more helpful. This is running Mavericks, Adblock 1.8.6, Chrome 37.

weird. I'm on Mavericks, Adblock 2.10.2, on Safari 7. but it worked on Safari before I upgraded (from Snow Leopard. yeah I was behind.) so I don't know why that would've changed.

I know what the problem is but you don't want to hear it.

You don't want people to upload non-animated gifs and be disappointed when users have settings that prevents their non-animated gifs from showing any animations?
i am confus

I'm assuming that this setting would just replace the gif with a jpeg/png showing only the first frame, or uses some javascript thing that does functionally the same.

Oh, I was assuming that it would just not show .gifs at all.

Requesting the opposite of the" best of" feature of dice roll, or, in other words, the "worst of" dice roll. It would be very useful to use with DnD 5ed rules for disadvantage.

I was wondering if we could get a MTG posting games subforum in the Magic the Gathering area of the forum.

If possible, it would be nice if every magic related posting game not directly related to the subforum they are in (like the Card Chain Game) could be moved there if it got created.

Is this something that could happen?

seriously? if we keep things that belong in the forum they're in there, then we have a grand total of two of those. we don't need a subforum for two threads. we just need 3cm to be with other magic topics.

WOuld it be possible to set up polls so you can close them at a specific date and time? Sometimes I start a COTW poll n the evening, but ti would be more convenient for me if it closed in the morning instead of 7pm.
