Just for fun, I'm going to create a Rainbow deck that does nothing but ramp into the best bombs across all colors. I fully expect that the deck will stink, but hey, all my decks do. I'm going to build this on the fly and type as I go.
Let's start with the core of the deck; I think this needs to be a green deck because
Satyr Wayfinder and
Cultivate are going to be very important to make sure we can actually cast our spells. We are also going to need
Darksteel Ingot because we always want to play some acceleration and fixing on the third turn. Then let's choose white as our secondary color because in a slow deck like this we want to have access to a reset button, and
Planar Cleansing is perfect for that. Also note that our Ingots won't be destroyed, so that's great. That brings us to this:
The Core4 x
Satyr Wayfinder4 x
Cultivate3 x
Darksteel Ingot2 x
Planar CleansingThe next step is to make sure we have some early plays so that we don't just roll over and die before we get to cast anything. Two-drop creatures that replace themselves are what we want so that we can get some early presence going while getting deeper into our deck. Luckily, we have both
Elvish Visionary and
Wall of Omens in our colors . Now we are here:
Early Game Established4 x
Satyr Wayfinder4 x
Elvish Visionary3 x
Wall of Omens4 x
Cultivate3 x
Darksteel Ingot2 x
Planar CleansingAt this point I would like to add a touch of spot removal because I don't want to lean on two copies of a sweeper as my only removal in the entire deck. I'm playing two copies of
Angelic Edict in another deck and that has worked out great so I will start there as a baseline and tweak as I play the deck some (if I don't end up discarding it!) I would also like to add some resilience because with so few creatures, losing one to removal can really hurt. I've found that two copies of
Treasured Find are terrific in any deck with Satyr Wayfinder, and the ability to bring back a removal spell when you need it is great too. Here we are so far:
Utility Spells Added4 x
Satyr Wayfinder4 x
Elvish Visionary3 x
Wall of Omens2 x
Treasured Find4 x
Cultivate3 x
Darksteel Ingot2 x
Angelic Edict2 x
Planar CleansingNow we get to the fun part - adding the bombs! We are going to play 24 land as a starting point because we can't afford to miss any early land drops but we don't need more than 24 because we have Wayfinders, Cultivates, and Ingots in the deck. That means we have 48 slots already accounted for with 12 to play with.
Kozilek is definitely going into this deck so let's look at each color's best bombs at 5+ mana to fill those last eleven slots:
has Baneslayer Angel and Resolute Archangel (to an extent, the effect is bomby) so it's pretty thin. Baneslayer is in.
actually has very little that's appealing to me;
Soul of Ravnica is just a big beatstick (so is Baneslayer, but lifelink and first-strike are amazing while seven-mana activated abilities are not) and
Mercurial Pretender looks fun but it requires another creature to be castable so I don't think I'm going to play it. I really should just drop the blue from the deck altogether but we're building a rainbow deck for the sake of it so I'm going to put in two copies of
Counterlash; I think this deck should be able to afford a six-mana hard counterspell and you will sometimes get a free bomb out of it.
has
Indulgent Tormentor,
Shadowborn Demon,
Rune-Scarred Demon, and
Griselbrand. I've never been impressed with the Tormentor in any deck I've tried him in so he's going to sit this one out and my boy Grizzlecards will be joining him because
is barely castable in a three-color deck. The other three Demons are in!
has
Stormbreath Dragon,
Inferno Titan, and
Siege Dragon. The first two are auto-includes but space is getting tight so I don't think Siege Dragon does enough for its seven-mana price tag.
We've filled nine of our twelve slots as we move into
, so I think it's pretty obvious that we just jam in three
Pelakka Wurms and call it a deck. Green is our primary color, so that casting cost shouldn't be an issue.
Arbor Colossus and
Terra Stomper are nice, but I just think the Wurm does so much more that it's hard to even consider those other guys. I also looked really hard at
Genesis Hydra because this deck should produce a ton of mana, but I'm going to start without it and see how it plays. Here is the deck now:
Bombs Added4 x
Satyr Wayfinder4 x
Elvish Visionary3 x
Wall of Omens2 x
Treasured Find4 x
Cultivate3 x
Darksteel Ingot2 x
Angelic Edict1 x
Baneslayer Angel1 x
Shadowborn Demon1 x
Stormbreath Dragon2 x
Planar Cleansing2 x
Counterlash1 x
Inferno Titan3 x
Pelakka Wurm2 x
Rune-Scarred Demon1 x
Kozilek, Butcher of TruthNow to build a manabase for this mess. Our primary color is
and our secondary color is
so we're going to play the full set of
Selesnya Guildgates automatically. Our splash colors all have very few cards each, but they all require two mana of their respective color so we are going to need one each of Island, Swamp, and Mountain to be able to fetch through
Cultivate. Additional gates and the
Darksteel Ingots should be sufficient fixing but we'll see. Our tertiary color is black because we have five cards in the deck that require black mana to cast, so I'm going to focus the mana sources in this order -
. Running twelve gates and twelve basics means that I have 36 sources to distribute among the five colors. Given that we want to cast our green and white spells on time, they will chew up the bulk of those sources. I'm thinking about 12-12-5-4-3 as a starting point so that brings us to this final deck:
Manabase Added4 x
Selesnya Guildgate3 x
Gruul Guildgate3 x
Orzhov Guildgate1 x
Azorius Guildgate1 x
Dimir Guildgate5 x
Forest4 x
Plains1 x
Island1 x
Swamp1 x
Mountain4 x
Satyr Wayfinder4 x
Elvish Visionary3 x
Wall of Omens2 x
Treasured Find4 x
Cultivate3 x
Darksteel Ingot2 x
Angelic Edict1 x
Baneslayer Angel1 x
Shadowborn Demon1 x
Stormbreath Dragon2 x
Planar Cleansing2 x
Counterlash1 x
Inferno Titan3 x
Pelakka Wurm2 x

Kozilek, Butcher of TruthThat was a fun post to write, I hope the deck turns out to be playable. Off to the lobbies!
