Hey Garren, you said you wanted to see the 5e monk in action. Well, I don't want to brag, but I just killed the goblin. Twice. :D

EDIT: Also, while I'm here, Garren, you can use this for Lee's token, if you wish:

Hey, we've still got one left.

Don't worry. I'm sure we will suffer soon enough :)

The sad part is I was going to have this goblin do the smart thing and surrender. He has to survive three players turns to do that however.

Does anyone here speak goblin? Maybe we should invite him for a drink and make him speak. :P

The rules are not completely clear about the monk unarmed strike as a bonus action. But I would treat it as an attack from an off-hand weapon, hence not adding modifiers.

When you use the attack action with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action. For example, if you take the Attack action and attack with a quarterstaff, you can also make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn.

Also if I need to roll the creatures saving throws, I predict a lot of misses. The dice roller seems to love my clerics. :V

By RAW, you can't use an unarmed strike as an offhand weapon because it's not light. Monk's Martial Arts ability is a separate scenario from TWF and handled by a specific rule which trumps the general rule.

When and if I run 5e game, I'm planning on introducing a "martrial strike" which is the same as unarmed, save that it has the light quality. That would mean anyone proficient with martial weapons could then use their hand as an off hand weapon.

I'd like to write up some rules for a more brawler-y fighter than the Monk, but I'm not sure if it should be it's own thing, a fighter subclass, additional battlemaster options or monk subclass. I was thinking about including things like "Jab: You may use your reaction to perform a quick unarmed attack on someone within your reach. This attack never does more than 1 + ability mod base damage." or "Snap Kick: You may perform an unarmed strike as a bonus action even if you're holding a two handed weapon."

I'll stop babbling now. :)

Oop. Input the 17 and (6) damage from Sandal on GS1 because I was on my way to attack, then realised it was a saving throw and not an attack throw. So GS1 is safe from the last Sacred Flame? Took the numbers out anyway.

As for monks I'd love to play one or see how one plays. I'm very much into kung fu and eastern philosophy.

As we got this started ambush started was thinking it might have been more interesting to have goblin or orc as a language instead of dwarf or elvish.

Now, I'm not part of this game, so pardon my intrusion to the OOC board, but does anyone know any online sources that I could use to acquire 5e stuff?

Have you checked out the WotC site? They have the basic rules up there, DM guide and starter characters.

Thanks, I'm gonna run a game of 5e IRL soon probably, and seeing how I hardly know anything about it's system, it'll be a big learning experience. Also, if there's space in this game, I'm interested once I hit up the rules.

Except by that fact, not being a light weapon, obviously. It is still an off-hand attack that the specific rule clearly is not clear if you should add or not the attack modifier.

I don't see anything in the rules saying I can't add the modifier. It's not even labelled as an off-hand attack. The monk sucked for so long, let it be good for once :P

I'll leave that for Garren to decide.

That is the problem. It is not specified. It makes sense being treated as an off-hand attack, even if it is a leg or other body part, though. I have nothing against Lee, Sandal has, but I do not. Just trying to understand better.

Well, a normal unarmed strike only does 1 point of bludgeoning damage. The monk, as a bonus, can roll a d4 instead. I think you probably get all your normal melee attack roll bonuses, but are limited to a single d4 of damage. (Keep in mind, the size of this die goes up as you level.)

I could be on crack, but I think this has been specifically addressed by the designers on Twitter or somewhere. The same applies to butt attacks by people with the Polearm Master feat and the off hand hand crossbow attack of people with the Crossbow Expert feat.

On the whole Monk attack thing currently going on; I'm actually going to rule by RAW on this account. The bonus unarmed strike is just that - a bonus attack - and as such will benefit from all modifiers that would effect a normal attack. I can find no instance of a creature (either PC or NPC) having the ability to make attacks as bonus actions while losing their modifiers in the process - the only exception to this rule would be Two-Weapon Fighting (as that is the only time it is specifically stated that you do not add your bonuses).

And the goblin has run off the map. Does anyone *really* need me to add to the map to show where it's running of to? It's basically just a clear shot - anyone who can attack at that range can hit it otherwise your just going to be chasing the thing over the hillside. If you want me to I will but effort. Basically I'm hoping Argun shoots it now to save me the hassle.

Does my two weapon fighting allow me to throw two weapons?
