Deck-building game

A deck-building game is a game that uses building a deck as the main focus of the gameplay. It is similar to collectible card games in that each player has their own deck. However, unlike CCGs, the cards are not sold in randomized packs, and the majority of the deck is built during the game, instead of before the game. Typically, the cards provide a type of game currency which allows a player to buy more cards to add to their deck.

The original deck-building game was Dominion, whose popularity spurred the creation of many others: notably Thunderstone (a fantasy dungeon crawl), Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer (also fantasy), and Legendary (based on Marvel superhero comics). Other games, such as the Mage Knight board game and Copycat, use deck-building as one mechanic among many, instead of the main focus of the game.

Deck-building games have inspired similar games, which focus on collecting things other than cards. (These are sometimes referred to as "pool-building games".) For instance, Puzzle Strike players collect cardboard chips.

I feel like I'm the only person who hated Dominion.

When I first heard they were re-releasing Mage Knight, 12 year old me was so psyched. But that isn't a deckbuilding game at all.

I'm not sure why the wikipedia page makes a point about acquisition methods of the cards, as if that is somehow relevant to the genre.

You're not, but I feel that most people who oppose it either do so becuase of the aesthetics of it (theme and inconsistent art), or because they don't have enough experience to enjoy the more nuanced strategical choices. Unless they just don't like card games in general or something along those lines.

Wow, what an interesting concept! I have never heard of Deck Building Games before. Do you guys know if there are any on the Windows Phone? Ascension is sadly not

I don't think there's anything at all on the windows phone. Not even a way to make phone calls. It is the only way I can explain never seeing them.
