Wukong is a Mary Sue basically.

I disagree with that assessment. While he is remarkably powerful, the entire story of the Journey to the West is about him making amends for his arrogance.

He still has all the powers though. You should comment on cards instead of comments.

But he has to wear the magical equivalent of a shock collar.

The first 2 shepherd cards are good from a design standpoint, but a bit underpowered. The 3rd one is a bit parasitic, but then they printed pull from eternity so it isn't that bad. Another comment I'd like to make is that lower costed shepherd cards can probably be pushed a bit more because it's harder to use the ability on curve without enablers.

Yeah but he never fails at anything. The entire story of Journey to the West is him saving everyone else's ass over and over. Sure he has a magic obedience circlet, but that doesn't make him not a Mary Sue.

I think shepherd is a pretty cool mechanic. I wish the tanglang were actual mantises though.

I dunno, everything was supposed to be humanoid animals in the set.

Some possible ideas for a thing that gives cards like 10000 step for viability in limited.

Courier (When this card enters the battlefield, exile the top card of your library face down. You may look at it and turn it face up at any time. When this card dies, put the exiled card into your hand.)

Not sure about this yet, it's mostly flavor driven so the mechanics might be weird

Zhǒngmǎ Heaven-Crosser
Creature - Horse Scout {U}
Courier, haste
As long as ~ carries a white message, it has flying
2/2

perhaps "delivers a message" for revealing the card, or for attacking or something. Perhaps revealing needs to be an attack trigger? "When it attacks you may reveal the exiled card"

yes cky, I will probably name all the races literally :V

you might need to tune the cost up, which kinda sucks in a way delve and convoke does (maro mentioned these mechanics limit the cards to increase cost)

When you get the card it carries, you are effectively Aven Fishering. and generally it's an automatic +.

not sure if this would complicate things too much but what if you only get to cast the card once when it dies or the message is lost?

so many possibilities. I am also worrying if it's too close to sheperd in the exile and then do stuff thing, but I am thinking I kinda want that in the set so I can have some exile subtheme or something.

I think naming everything in Mandarin will sound weird to Mandarin speakers and incomprehensible to English speakers. Like Kamigawa, but even more obtuse. It might be better to just call everything by its English name.

The Heaven-Crosser is super cool. I think it should be a 2/1 though.

Fair enough, since I can't even pronounce those things. I'll just make names inspired by Chinese words or something. Like I planned to originally.

My new thought for courier

Courier (When this creature enters the battlefield, exile the top card of your library face down. When this creature attacks you may turn the exiled card face up. When this card deals damage to an opponent you may put the exiled card into your hand)

That sounds a bit excessively complicated.

Can you just reference hideaway?

If the exile card matter, it's kinda like imprint.
