Wow I didn't even PLAN for this thread to devolve into chaos, bickering, and amateur moderation. I guess my presence somehow accelerates the spread of entropy throughout the multiverse.

This thread is like walking into a crowded sports bar at 11 PM at half time in Baltimore with an air-horn and a megaphone and announcing that your favorite football team is the Steelers.

You don't know what is going to happen.

But something tells you deep down that you shouldn't have done it.

I think things have gone long enough here. Cato clearly had no ill intent from starting the thread, and most of the posts seemed to be in the spirit of his original. Unfortunately, as often happens in threads like this it seems, somewhere in the discussion feelings get hurt for whatever reasons and things go downhill from there. A few things before I lock:

  • "Backseat moderation" is against the CoC. Please don't do it. If you think something posted by another member is against the code of conduct, just report it (if you're so inclined) and move on. Don't reply to it; don't give the person a lecture. "XYZ is a form of flaming" is a good example of backseat moderation. I've been doing the messageboard thing since 2001 when I first joined WotC. I don't recall ever seeing somebody reply to that sort of comment with, "Golly gee! You're right, and I'm such a dolt for not realizing it before! Please forgive me!" At best, it gets ignored; at worst, you get what we have here - back and forth flaming and trolling.

  • Discussing who is banned is not a CoC violation. There is nothing wrong with saying, "I think JimBob was perma-banned by the mods." But... flaming against a banned member is still flaming. "I think JimBob was perma-banned by the mods. Thank goodness - that dude was such an arrogant prick!" That? That's flaming - not for mentioning JimBob was banned, but for calling him an arrogant prick.

  • TPmanW's "Lifetime Achievement Award" idea is interesting. But, I think maybe the site should be up and running for more than 11+ months before such an idea really takes hold. ;)

Some folks should probably anticipate receiving a PM from me sometime in the near future.
