Seems kind of interesting for an owling mine strategy. Do we have enough to pull that off in now? I mean, we've got the new lich commander, this card, underworld dreams, spiteful visions, kami of the crescent moon, black vise (and tools to flicker it), Howling Mine, Font of Mythos, Ebony Owl Netsuke, Kederekt Parasite, Phyrexian Tyranny, Arcane Laboratory, Mana Maze... We can't use white play restricting cards like Rule of Law or Ethersworn canonist to help keep hands full, but this does seem like we're reaching a critical mass of lethal group hugs

Plenty of counter spells so you can stop all those extra cards you don't want. Black and red give you removal and things like breath of malfegor.

You still have things like Erayo, Standstill, and Fatespinner that help discourage.

And of course Temple Bell/Otherworld Atlas + Mind Over Matter.

He just doesn't realize that "too expensive" has no meaning in commander.

It's 7 mana for a card that deals 2-3 damage a turn, max.

Any strategy that is dependent on giving your opponent free card advantage has always been either awful or mediocre. I think the Netsuke deck a couple years ago in block was okay but that's about it.

I'm not sure this would be playable even at 4 mana. Seven? Lolno.

In addition to Owling mine, Turbofog would like a word with you. The core of making such a strategy work is to a) make sure you're reaping advantage as well and b) use your advantage to negate the enemy's in a massive way. A single Fog functions as a time walk, rendering irrelevant an entire turn (or more with some fog effects) of a creature-based opponent. An Arcane Laboratory ensures cards build up with negligible utility, improving only the breadth, rather than depth of enemy options which you can then handle. Recall, with a Lab out you only need one counterspell a turn no matter how many cards everyone is drawing.

If your opponent has 2-3 cards in hand in commander on turn 7 they are probably going to lose anyway.

On the flip side if you don't hit 7 mana until turn 7 in commander you are probably going to lose anyway.

*Disclaimer: Yeah, it doesn't work that way for every deck, I know. But especially in commander, no card other than the General himself is an island

Wasn't owling mine a standard deck and a major meta player?

STandstill is perfect in this regard as well, because you can play through it to give them more pain... I mean card advantage. No... I mean pain.
