It is a thing, indeed, Raven. And what a thing it is!

There are *a lot* of things I really like about this story, but the thing I want to particularly call attention to is how fully-realized this kind of traveling carnival is. We just get a brief little glimpse inside this world, but it seems very, very real -- like it has a language and a logic all of its own and, even though I'm an intruder into this culture, I feel like I know it. That comes from the verbal codes and the hand signals the characters use, the shorthand way they refer to their work and their surroundings, the habits and customs which they honor both in practice and in the breach. You've described a place that feels very real to me, even at the same time that it feels fantastic, and it creates this wonderful sense that I'm peeking behind the curtain, almost.

I also think this Nasperge fella is quite the interesting character, and I'm very intrigued to see what the cards have in store for him going forward. :)

@Orcish: Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The carnival scene came together really quickly, and things just seemed to work for me. I was really happy with the code I included, and I had briefly debated not telling the reader it even was a code, to help make it that much more real. Ultimately, though, I figured people would just take it literally (because, why wouldn't you?) so it seemed better to include it.

I'll be interested to see what others have to say, because there are a number of things going on here that I, at least, find pretty interesting!

Thanks for reading!

Ruwin, Thanks so much for Reading... get it?

Seriously, though, thanks, and I'm glad this one clicked for you. There are several things in this story I'm actually pretty proud of, so I'm glad people are liking it so far. I'll address the Aubedore reading in a spoiler box, but remember it's just my interpretation. We'd have to ask Nasperge, and he likely won't tell us the truth anyway.

Please note, Readers, that the spoiler box below is, indeed, actual spoilers, so I recommend you read the story before you read my speculations below.

Bernou's Reading

Nasperge's Reading

So, I did actually invent the entire set of Aubedore cards. Is that something people would be interested in seeing, or is a certain air of mystery preferred?

I'm going to vote for mystery, I think.

Later, absolutely. For now, I like the gradual discovery.

I'd prefer to have the entire list myself, but I'd likely contact you personally about that.
I mean... obviously, I have a vested interest in it.

Allow me to check the cards and make sure that is acceptable...

@Barinellos: Yeah, if you're interested in it, I can send you the full list either tonight or tomorrow.

As you like and at you convenience.
I'm sure you can work out where I'd go with that.
Similarly, I've had ideas for creating my own fortune deck, but... lazy.

It is some work, to be sure.

So, I think I'm going to put this up for vote this coming week. Is there anything people think I need to address in it first?

No, this work is great, says I!

However, I am putting Rest for the Wicked up for vote this next week. Luna requested that go up for vote by itself - but then, I wouldn't want to disrupt anything here. I can push it back another week if that works better?

Hmm. Well, I'm not in any major hurry, and you got yours written before I got mine. I can push this back one more week, I think. I don't think it will affect too much.

In fairness, check and checkmate is going to go up with it since it sort of builds on that too.

Then yeah, definitely best if I hold off until the week after next. Works for me!

Oh, crum, I still haven't put "Blood on the Tracks" up. Should that go before "Rest for the Wicked"?

Sorry. :(

Ahaha! Oh man, I totally forgot that hadn't been voted on yet!

Ok, Raven, OL - just put this stuff up for vote tomorrow. I'll just postpone Rest for the Wicked for another week, it's really no problem. :D
