Yes, and those people should be allowed to do so.

or it's just easier to let folks deal with it on their own...this is honestly the only gaming forum where I have seen this ever pop up as an issue......*Shrugs*
"no one's fixing it so it must not be a problem" is not a strong stance, especially in a community with as poor a record of tolerance, especially on gender and sexuality issues, as gaming.

I didn't say was a stance or anything, i just said this was the only gaming forum I have encountered where this has been brought up, maybe it's because they don't feel that it's a big deal or they didn't think about or the user's don't' care enough to make it a thing but whatever.

For what it's worth i'm in favor of the fill in boxes..but i plan to use them for lulz more than anything....

Just a question but beyond making current forum residents happy is this expect to draw in new blood?

I mean, it's not really a giant advertising point, but marginalized groups like being acknowledged for some strange reason, so taking steps to make them feel accommodated and creating a more tolerant, welcoming community may wind up drawing in more people who feel alienated by the gaming community as a whole. so it may draw in more non-cis or just non-male individuals.

or it might not. either way it's a good thing to have.

make it optional
make the options he, she and they which will cover 99.999% of people

add other options if someone specifically requests them

vocal vs silent user base etc.

it's true, an ancient eldritch spell prevents those who don't use commonly approved pronouns from using any website but tumblr

the people who use tumblr also use the rest of the internet, and their identities don't change once they leave the site. and since an open field lets them do it if they want without making every single user consider if they want to be bunself, it's a good approach.

Just a question but beyond making current forum residents happy is this expect to draw in new blood?

The following are good reasons to do something:
  • to make current residents happy
  • because it's the right thing to do.

The following are bad reasons to avoid doing something:
  • because no one has done it before
  • because any one person finds the idea stupid

That's not to say that there aren't in some instances good reasons to avoid doing something, or bad reasons to do something, but in this particular case everything seems to be falling on one side of the scale.

 i never said it was stupid nor did i say we shouldn't do this because no one else has all I was asking was is this expect to bring in new blood, so the answer is basically what razorborne said it may and it may not. Which opens it up to actually using it as a way to get hopefully more folks.

no one is going to hear that this site suddenly has the ability for them to choose their pronouns and come register

however, someone in the future might register and if they couldn't choose their pronouns they might change their mind. It won't drive anyone away and may encourage people to make an account.

Actually some people will hear about it if their friends are already here and tell them.

1. Why is this thread going on for 9 freaking pages? This is relatively simple issue. Most people in this discussion know that being more inclusive is the right thing to do. The technical side of this issue is rather simple as well. The only remaining decision is whether or not pronouns should get a free-form box or a list. (I think a box would be best, because a list will eventually result in gatekeeping of some sort OR be annoying for the staff because they need to add more options all the time.)

2. Why are people using the word "gendertrender" included in this discussion? Why are people engaging with them?

3. If you opt for a list instead of a box, what goes on the list and why?

Because we have a distinct tendency to talk everything to death before doing anything, which left unchecked will result in nothing ever happening.

That said: we now have Identity and Preferred Pronoun Set fields, which are replacing the previous Gender field. There was no way to transfer the information over, so the new fields will have to be populated by each person manually, but they're there now, and will be displayed below your avatar in your posts and on your profile.

I made up the descriptions on the fly, since despite talking the issue to death we hadn't covered that. (Of course.) So if there's a problem with them, or a suggestion to make them better, feel free to bring them up.

Indeed, it looks fine. I wonder what the character limit is in the preferred pronoun field is? I would hope it's a reasonably low number to keep the information from artificially bloating the size of every post.
