I'll have you know that guy tried to make at least 5 threads but was stopped after 2.

So this is basically entirely unimportant (like below even the lowest thing on your to-do list) but is there any reason why the 'Dice' function can't work in PM's? Like I said there are a million and one work arounds so it's not important I'm just curious is all.

The short answer is "yes" -- dice rolls are tied to a post ID, which private messages don't have, so I can't flip a switch and have it work immediately.

That said, there's no reason we couldn't add a msg_id column to the database and have it look up those instead if it's rendering a private message... I suspect it would end up being a fair amount of work though and (given the way you started your post!) there are probably better things to do for now.

Good idea though!

I don't know if this was brought up before, nor do I know how much work it would be, but might there be a way to allow users to change what font the forums are displayed in? Personally, I dislike how Arial makes I's and l's look nearly identical, considering how often fantasy names like "Iun Illana" come up.

Hm, yes, that name is pretty hard to read.

Customization to that degree is usually a trap; it ends up being a fair amount of work for something most people will never touch*, and makes it that much harder to support everybody. In my opinion, it's probably best to have custom font choices handled on a per-user basis by userstyles.

To adjust the font for posts, you want to use the .postbody selector; for using serifed fonts, the CSS block would look something like so:
Code:
.postbody {
    font-family: Palatino, Times New Roman, serif
}

If you need help getting this set up let me know (here, PM, whatever).

* fun fact: less than 10% of our users have changed their theme from whatever was the default at the time they registered! And that's a much larger UI change than fiddling with fonts.

Um, yeah... @_@
I have no idea what I'm looking at there.

But I won't bother you until I have some time of my own to actually devote to reading and understanding what I'm doing, which won't be until at least Monday. Thanks for getting me started in the right direction, though.

Am I correct in understanding from a cursory glance that this will involve adding my own theme to the forums?

I can also help you with userstyles, if you'd like some step by step through steam. It's not that difficult, so it'd probably take like, 15 minutes tops?

If you reported something in error, just PM the mod assigned to that area and explain.

This is going to be a doozy, but I think it would be amazing if you could implement a Gatherer-like database for YMtC cards on the wiki. If we plan to have an NGA Constructed, we need some kind of search function to browse all cards in the format.

I agree with you, CKY (although I think there's other folks who have different opinions on whether this is a worthwhile project). I unfortunately emphatically do not have the know-how to get this set up, because I'm literally learning absolutely everything about coding for the wiki (aside from some prior knowledge of CSS and HTML) as I go along.

However, I think this would be a very worthwhile project and if Welder (or maybe Fire?) (or, hell, anyone else here who knows code) would be interested as well, I'd be glad to lend a hand in any way I can.

I know how to code, but I probably dont know the specific code of the wiki or anything. Mown could probably do it, and with Google finding an easy method of searching for things should be easy to find :P

If someone wanted to teach Jack how to code a wiki, Jack has the time and inherent ... tendencies..... that would be helpful in getting something of such a sort done.

Edit: After some thought Jack can't do that for other reasons. But if someone wanted to point me in the right direction I could start making a list of every relevant card.

Mown, as far as what is wanted for the advanced Dice roller, I am very much in favor of the One Roll System. I'd love to get into a Monsters and Other Childish Things game if I ever have the time for it.

I'll see what I can do. I was planning on posting some type of questionnaire in the RPG section to get a feel for what people want out of the thing.

I actually strongly suspect that we'd have to use non-wiki coding tech to get it to work unless we wanted to create a LOT of individual pages and categories and basically clutter everything straight to hell.

What languages do you know? Any thoughts on how you'd be able to pull info out of a wiki entry for an external database?

Honestly the easiest thing I can think of is have a special database or even a page on the wiki that acts as a database. I mean make one by hand instead of sesrchjng through the wiki for cards.

I know c++ and do game programming, so I can adapt to any object oriented stuff. Other kind of languages tend to confuse me a bit because of how I organize things, but if you really need help I can try anyway. I love to mess around with stuff (and then ultimately abandon it :V)

I mean, it sort of depends on how much work you want to put on the user base when it comes to utilizing it. You could just specify the name and do a search, but that goes to hell the instant two people use the same name for a card in two different sets. Unless we force unique naming, which realistically, I don't see us doing, you're probably going to need more than just the name to distinguish them, and you could just let those correspond to the file path of the image.

What I have in mind would be a Gatherer specifically for cards legal in the NGA Constructed format. If we end up having cards with the same name, we can differentiate them with different entries for, say, "Slow Response [NGA]" versus "Slow Response [FGO]".

I really hope this is possible, because a searchable database of cards will be a keystone of the NGA Constructed format. It will be a lot harder to build decks for the format if you have to pore over multiple set lists to find the cards you want to look up.

There's no reason we couldn't have a gatherer type search engine with many many fields and different output formats and all that.
