Never seen The Day After, but I probably saw the Mr. Rogers episodes.

In the 1800s passenger pigeons accounted for 1/4 of North American bird life. Flocks more than a mile across were fairly common. The last known specimen died in 1914. Whoo humans!

The microwave oven was invented by an engineer who noticed that a piece of radio equipment melted his chocolate bar.

Gunpowder was invented by Chinese alchemists. Instead of granting immortal life, it can be used to kill people.

The area between your eybrows is called the glabella.

The smell of rain hitting the ground is called "pertichor".

The tingly feeling or your feet falling asleep is called parasthesia. I love paresthesia.

Lightning storms can result from tin foil in microwaves.

Chick-Fila sandwitch.

They need to put a warning label on those things.

Oh and I think the time my microwave oozed butter for 6 months was orville reddenbacker, not a potato. The potato was a relatively simple endeavor.

Ooh. New random fact.

Overcooking O Reddenbacker popcorn can make your microwave ooze butter for 6 months before shutting down. At the same time, it will create more smoke than pooring several gallons of gasoline on a campfire.

Microwaving popcorn without burning it is tricky business

The person who programmed EDH into Magic Online did it in his spare time. I believe he's part of the commander rules committee now.

The Hearthstone card "Malygos" does not have its namesake on the card.

Simply put..... this is Kalecgos. Not Malygos. Wrong dragon on the card.

"Based upon the selection of Malygos art available at the time"..........

That sentence don't end well.

A jack and a gill were old English measurements. The nursery ryme "Jack and Jill" may have been written about Charles I's attempt to increase liquor taxes. Charles motioned to raise the tax but was vetoed by parliament. He got around the veto by reducing the size of the jack while leaving the tax due per jack constant. People stopped using the jack (came tumbling down) which backfired on the king (and broke his crown). The gill was based on the jack and thus, came tumbling after.

More Strange Facts: German Edition

There are over 300 kinds of bread in Germany. There are also bread museums.

German is the official language of 5 countries: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. It is also spoken in Northern Italy and the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine.

Germany is the first country to adopt Daylight Saving Time (DST) in 1916.

When JFK visited Berlin, he infamously said “Ich bin ein Berliner,” which also translates to “I am a jelly donut.”

Berlin has the largest train station in Europe.

While "Ich ein Berliner" could be interpreted as somebody identifying as a pastry, it also a perfectly correct way to identify yourself as a resident of Berlin. While squinty's fact was correct, I thought that was worth pointing out that JFK didn't make a mistake.

Hey I knew that one! Studying languages has lead me to a few phrases like that where it could mean something nonsensical but also is a legitimate statement. With the above example everyone seems to focus on the jelly doughnut part and not bother to learn that it is indeed the correct sentence.

The corvette is the most widely produced class of military ship of modern times (I imagine the most produced was the tireme or something, from when engineering advanced at a slower pace). It was originally conceived as a stopgap measure. Something that could be produced quickly and cheaply before other ships were ready to fill its role.
Ancient Romans considered pants a sign of barbarism.
The White House has 32 bathrooms. My house has significantly fewer.
