I have been reading this! I have! :D

@Grim Vengeance: I really have a thing for magical armaments, so let me preface all of this with saying that this is SOOO COOOOOOL!!! I think, however, may favorite things about THIS particular artifact is that it really doesn't do anything until AFTER you die. Am I right in assuming that it bestows really... nothing upon the wielder, other than, if they get killed why using it, they end up with the cursed semi-immortality that is represented here?

Which is something, don't get me wrong. I'm sure a few... enterprising black mages could find uses for it.

@The Maul: Awwww yeah! A hammer. I love things that are forged directly from the body parts of magical animals, and storm dragons definitely qualify as magical (if not necessarily animals). Thunder, I believe, has always been vastly underused as a potential source of sorcerous destruction, so I'm happy it found a place here - though, as always, I wonder what sort of mischief could be had if something like this were ever, uh, removed from Maral's vault...

Speaking of that, I was wondering - if anyone WANTED to write a story about these artifacts, would they have to interact with Maral in some way? Does she "loan" potentially dangerous artifacts to people she trusts? Is her security impossible to breach? How skilled does a thief have to be in order to snag something from Maral's no doubt well defended bank o' magical goodies?

It would be a shame to waste all these really cool artifacts - so how would you approach incorporating them into stories after they have come into Maral's possession?

One more thing: Would Maral forge the Eightfold Lotus a sword if he asked her to? And how do you feel about Maral meeting Jinsen sometime in their collective, nebulous pasts?

The thought of a thief breaking into Maral's vault while she's against has my mind-grapes ripening as we speak...

Well... not really. The being using it pretty much always is under its effect, it just isn't quite as... remarkable unless you die.
The stipulation of the contract was that the bearer "will never fall in battle" essentially meaning they are unstoppable, though it doesn't make them impervious to violence. It more just... removes the limits of the body. You can simply keep going forever.

You are all now, I'm sure, realizing that Lilin's acquisition was something of an ingenious one. She gave it to an unliving construct.

You're going to love the next one.
Actually, even *I'm* a bit upset about this next one...

I've sort of been waiting for someone to really come forward with the question.
If someone wanted to write a story featuring one of these artifacts, they ARE intended to be Public.
The issue of interacting with Maral is a bit murkier. The original FtV artifacts are mostly implied to have wills of their own and methods of possibly slipping out of Maral's grasp. The Armory weapons, on the other hand, are potent, but not alive.
As to the question of loaning things out... she actually has a will stipulating what to do with the artifacts should something happen to her.
Her security is... dire, but not impenetrable. The Armory isn't even in her maximum security vault, so it might be easier for a very very skilled thief to get in and take some of these. Actually, you might have to go full Ocean's 11 to get through everything, because she has some very... proactive defenses. However, there are keys she's made for several people, among them Raleris. They aren't traditional keys, and require knowledge of how to specifically use them, but it might be easier to take it from them rather than crack her vault. Well... actually, I say "them" but I don't have anybody besides Raleris on that list. She's... something of a hermit when left to her own devices.

She does, in fact, take commissions from others. There's a little something about this in the piecemeal story that's been sitting around since before I finished Wild Card, which maybe we'll see soon at some point, though it's half out of my hands at the moment.
The one thing to say though is that Maral isn't particularly old. She just keeps herself constantly occupied.

Of course, since then, we've had the ever-expanding world of Beryl and her interactions, so we're starting to get more of that with Orcish, Ruwin and you.

Well, Beryl's story has definitely expanded outward a bit. But even the thought of trying to do something as large as you have at work here makes my head spin. I can barely keep track of a handful of characters and plots, let alone dozens.

I'm glad that you can, though, because it means I get to watch and enjoy!

I'm actually going to be posting the maybe final version of To Call the World to Heel later today I think I hope I pray so as far as the Vasilias storyline, that'll be one more piece of that puzzle, and it'll actually provide a very obvious way for Maral to become involved: via Raleris. Or, y'know, she could become involved independently and come to Raleris for answers. But basically, there's more to work with now than there was back when Beast, Juju, and Barinellos first embarked on that project.

I really love the maul. It's a great little story, a great piece of Kokkinos history, and I love Maral's way of getting the maul out of the glacier. Really, really cool stuff.

As far as getting items out, this'd be a good reason to consider bringing CKY's Mad Thief planeswalker from Solphos into the fold.

I actually, ironically, had plans regarding that already. :incognito:
I mean, every piece helps, regardless.

Raven's been really accommodating in letting me do nearly whatever the hell I want with his stuff.

Well, it helps that there's a lot to be done.

You all know how I sit on Worldbuilding in general, so I tend to make what's needed and little else. Getting things fleshed out is always nice.

Oakenwrath

So, I feel like the antagonists here could use a name, but I couldn't come up with anything.

Mm, nah, I think you're good. I like this one a lot. Interesting setting, interesting visuals, interesting, if horrific, object... yeah, I'd say this is a winner.

Interestingly, it's much more in line with your previous series than most of the objects from this series, in that it seems to have a more ambient destructive power and perhaps even a crude emotional drive.

*Quietly registers Crude Emotional Drive as the name for his latest band...*

I like the Oakenwrath, although I admit it's just nice to get some more coming through in general. For some reason, the image of a chained treefolk amused me greatly. I really like your description of the staff after it had started growing again. It was nice and vivid.

Well, in fairness, we're only 3 deep in so far... though I am very much trying to separate this series from the previous series in that regard.
I'm glad that you liked the setting, visuals, and item itself. Honestly, I was feeling like Albilhom was a bit generic, but honestly, that was what I was aiming for. I just wanted a sort of traditional high fantasy world to play in. So, I'm curious if you feel like that came through at all.

I'll admit too, that even I got sort of uncomfortable with the story. I mean, it's just so... gray all over. There's no black or white for this.

Yeah, green was pretty severely missing in the previous go around, but it IS also pretty hard to design for, green just doesn't want tools. Still, I'm glad that it struck such a resonant chord.

Well, green is probably the most challenging color to design artifacts for, if for no other reason than green's general "anti-artifact" attitude. Also, one of the things green does best, creature pumping, is something that non-color aligned artifacts have pretty much always been able to do on their own anyway.

But Oakenwrath definitely "feels" green to me in every way I think it should.

Yeah, I thought tying it to the forests was a good option that built that resonance between the two pretty strongly.

Anyways! Time for the next entry!

I like this a lot. The story is great, and the swords are fun. Sounds like they could result in a real nasty surprise if someone tried to use them without understanding how powerful they really are.

I feel like this is the first time Maral's added a lot of her own voice to the proceedings, which in fairness, is befitting given the circumstances surrounding them.
It's not that she hasn't spoken in the past, but it was a much more passive take on things, which also befits her role in relation to those.

So, those among our missing members, or which just haven't chosen to comment, will have a bit of a backlog to work through, because I am totally doing another one to keep with the schedule I have set for myself. By all means, those brethren abroad, feel free to comment on past things as well, even if I continue to update.

Also, sorry about putting more pressure on you guys once you actually return. :p

And incidentally, I realized I'd kind of... stopped putting the very important "Found On" section on all my previous things... frustrating.

Wow. This is awesome. o_o

Great story, great item, great tie-in to Maral's own personality and narrative. Yeah, nice work.

Alright, I'm back up to speed.

As has been mentioned, I do like that we're seeing a little bit more of Malal's thought process and worldview in the most recent entries. There are a lot of neat little character insights in there.

RE: Oakenwrath, I can't exactly explain why I find the mental image of a swearing treefolk so funny, but I do. I just never picture them as being foul-mouthed. It shouldn't make me laugh, but it does.

(It's possible you meant "oaths" in a more magical sense. But, please, don't correct me!)

RE: The Blood of Ghuilbin, I really, really like this one as a Malal story. The bit about the boat is wonderful.

And thinking about red mana and twin curved swords both put me in mind of a certain 'walker we all know. Were they ever to cross paths, I wonder if Malal might make a sale.

RE: Void Edge, I like the neat little twist on the trope of the villain who craves an audience. The fact that Malal does indulge him, at least for a while, is a nice little subversion of the usual story.

First up, Orcish "Maral". With an "R"... and no, not Malar!... Ya smart ass.

Anyways,
Oakenwrath:
Out of everything, I don't think I'd have described any of it as funny. Though you aren't far off, but a bit deep into the gutter. It isn't like he's calling them names, but more like "I'll murder everything you love" sort of oath.

The Blood of Ghuilbin:
I'm afraid that it might be something of a problem if Beryl and Maral ever met and Beryl really liked the swords....
because they're made to Maral scale.

Void Edge:
As psychotic and ruthless as the Nameless is, I'm not actually sure I'd call him a villain per se.
