Having just watched Word Crimes (and realizing that I'm not subscribed to Weird Al's channel), I wonder if anyone else heard about some big dictionary (I can't recall if it was Oxford or Webster or what) actually adding "figuratively" to the definitions of "literally". I am of two minds about it, myself.

I feel that both of those dictionaries have quite clearly made their stand as chroniclers of language and not guardians of language. On the one hand, using literally to mean figuratively is stupid, on the other hand, English isn't a centralized language so words mean whatever they mean to the two parties involved. If schools started teaching the controversy, I would get pissed.

Yeah, several of these hit familiar notes for me. The "Literally" thing has always bothered me. "It's" vs "its" is annoying, though sometimes it is fair to chalk it up to a simple typo. I've done it myself, lamentably. But I've had students in college-level courses who genuinely don't know the difference between "your" and "you're," or "there," "their" and "they're." One pet peeve of mine, which arguably isn't even incorrect but it still bothers me, is when people use the word "since" to mean "because." The word "since" should, in my opinion, remain a denotation of the passage of time: "Ever since WWII," or "We've been here since 3:00." It also annoys me when people begin a non-question sentence with the word "which," because it invariably creates a fragment.

Which is what I have been literally saying this entire time. Its a real shame their going to keep getting you're goat since you seem determined to get the point across. No reason to get hanged up about it though.

I'm sorry for that.

I'm not sorry for that, as you can see by the fact I am still posting this even though I have the chance to delete it right now instead of pushing cement. Anyways, this promotion of Weird Al's allowed me to rediscover one of his true classics Stuck in the Drivethrough, which reminds me of all those tense domestic dramas that act as extended metaphors for a childless marriage.

Don't worry, Raven. It's going to be okay.

Did I just piss off the person who created Raiker Venn? This seems like a bad idea. I do dumb things sometimes. Oh well, I've lived a good life. Tell my antique wall collection I will have loved them.

Haha, don't worry about it, Doc. I'm just kidding.

Actually, I enjoy annoying people with grammar stuff, myself. Whenever I talk to my mother and ask her how she is, whether she says "good" or "well," I "correct" her to the other one. She hates that.

Also, I love using the word "irregardless." It drives people up a wall...

I have a feeling that my life will from now on forever be divided into pre-Trapped in the Closet and post-Trapped in the Closet. Glorious, truly glorious. Who knew that a Hip-Hopera would be the perfect vehicle for the Theater of the Absurd?

A lot of those questions had me rolling my eyes but the actual answers were good!

(Calling stuff "surreal" when it's just "weird" really sticks in my craw, for example. >_<)

In fairness, most people don't have the proper education to appreciate the difference. It IS rather an academic distinction to the plebeian.

I don't rag on them!
I browbeat them.

I greatly prefer the original art on Browbeat.

[EDIT]By the way, is there a way to autocard to specific versions of a card?

I don't think so. Someone should ask Welder about that actually, see if we can't get that feature implemented...

Also, I'm like... almost done with To Call the World to Heel, but it's developed kind of a kudzu plot and in addition to the massive rehaul of the middle section I ended up tweaking a whole lot of stuff in the beginning and reworking a bunch of the ending as well and it's roughly 11,000 words long right now and I just don't know how this got so horribly, horribly out of hand @_@

Help me I am drowning in my inability to write simple narratives T_T

When I'm drowning, my break-glass-in-case-of-emergency move usually looks something like this.

Me: Hey, character, what is it you want to do here?
Character: Basically, I want to do X.
Me: *types* "Character walked into place Y and started to do X."

Hahaha

I actually have all the motivations down, it's the dialogue writing part that's taking forever. >_< In part because I'm trying to make the baseline dialogue more distinct and I also made some super terrible decisions regarding certain characters's speech patterns???

Also I'm more and more worried that there's a lot of exposition in the story. Like, I don't mind exposition but it's apparently a Thing That Is Bad In Writing these days so I'm concerned that the story itself just requires too much setup. I mean, it doesn't help that like... there's Vasilias's history, then Renn's history with Vasilias, then the nature of Valjan... like the basic elements of the story already require quite a bit of exposition.

I don't think there's anything wrong with exposition per se. I think boring, unnecessary exposition is not super great. But, if it's interesting, exposit away!

Besides, this is from Raleris's POV, right? I assume that man lives for exposition.
