It's worth reiterating though that even though I think I correctly predicting how women on this board would feel, I'm not a ciswoman and don't want to speak for them. To me, the rampant sexism in geekdom is reason enough to say that gendered slurs are unacceptable, but I don't want to incorrectly interpret the feelings of others.

(I literally cannot see a single good argument for keeping "whore" though. There are other, better, less derogatory words that don't slut shame people in the sex industry.)

You're welcome.

Note to anyone not insane: Don't click on either link if you're using Chrome, and log out of youtube before using the second one.

On topic, I still have seen no evidence that profanity will turn off posters. Anyone got a stat on that, or is it just a baseless assertion to sooth the egos of the fragile flowers who act like they've never been on the internet before?

Good argument: We're doing just fine with whore unfiltered

Since you just typed it without the filter kicking in, I would have to say, "No." ;)

So, is there any reason why expletives are censored, but it's perfectly fine to discuss the nuances of magical sex while including graphic mental imagery? I've got absolutely no problem with the thread I linked, but it strikes me as a big inconsistency that you can't say "sh*t sux", while "barbed cat dicks" is somehow a valid phrase to use in a sentence and more safe for work and younger users.

In my opinion (and this is purely my opinion and in no way an official position), what is being said in that thread is of a sexual nature it isn't " obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit" (to quote our CoC). I know "obscene" and "sexually explicit" are terms that are ill-defined (pornography less so), so I think people can disagree with me on this, but I don't see the thread or any posts in it as a violation of our CoC.

Then there's another thing:

optical illusion

Most people here will see a couple having sex. Some adults and most children will see a number of dolphins. (Yeah, it took me a while to see the dolphins as well.)

The thread you discussed implies a lot and provides visual imagery, but only to those who know what it's about. If censorship serves the purpose of protecting the minds of young children, that thread doesn't need to be censored.

Cats do have barbed penises. Talking about cat penises isn't really sexually explicit. At least not to me. Even talking about human penises isn't necessarily sexually explicit.

And I don't feel like I should say this, but the word "dick" is literally never used in that thread.

This point doesn't make very much sense to me. Even our youngest potential posters (assumedly preteens) would have already had their "birds and bees" talk with their parents and a rudimentary understanding of sex, so I'm not sure how anyone could misinterpret or not understand the thread, or how it could be taken into any other context given the fact that the intent is stated in the very first post.

Just because a post doesn't use graphic language, doesn't mean that it can't produce graphic imagery. Is the sentence "Impressive, those large male genitals produced an unexpected quantity of ejaculate on that broad's countenance" really any better than "wow that **** massive cock came all over her face"?

This is key and kinda helps prove my point (and other peoples') about the word filter, everything is relative. Although I understand that you're one of the few mods who's actually against a mandatory word filter in the first place :V

Yeah I think that's incredibly backwards and stupid.

I see both, because I'm an artist. [flips hair, lights clove cigarette, adjusts beret]

Also, del Prete is great.

It might be worth remembering that not all moderators in all sections operate the same way or interpret the CoC the same way...

I almost feel I should apologize. I'm quite honestly quite ambivalent on the whole thing. On the one hand I will accept and work around just about anything that's finalized; while on the other I'd rather not facilitate baser expressions, especially when it invokes vilification and vitriol.
And all at the same time I feel I have no right to argue when it's kind of clear the group I hang around are allowed certain liberties that others can't seem to be granted.

Yeah, I do feel we of the A,F&S are "getting away with murder," as it were. Granted, there will always be distinct differences when mentioning phallic imagery as opposed to saying dick, but that would be true of any argument. As I said somewhere before, the key is maturity and openness/acceptance, not backlashes that have already had to be removed multiple times from this very section of the boards :face: .

I have given much more thought to George Carlin than I ought to have, and have long since come to the conclusion that it's not the words themselves that are the issue, but really the intent behind them. That's why, I believe, hate speech is being banned on these boards.

Meanwhile, I've meticulously danced around the subject while not answering a bloody thing, so where's my point? What's my stance?

Well, I think that some words do carry baggage. If I were to be put on the spot, gun-to-my-head choosing words to block, these are the ones that come to mind:
****
****
Slut
****

Noticeably absent are ****, whore, cock and ****; and I would like to give a short reason why. For **** and **** both, I believe the occasional usage (not too liberal, but I know I couldn't stop anyone who wanted to) is acceptable, though I am a bit of a special case.* As for whore, I think saying "attention-whore" is a perfectly legitimate thing to say.** Cock is just my sick enjoyment; I love jokes that bait you into thinking dirty then turn around and act all innocent.

* I have learned maybe 2 new curse words since I was 10 (to clarify, that's over a decade ago), but I don't actually curse all that often -- I virtually didn't curse at all up until last year. I even know most English curse words' Spanish equivalent (learned during the same period).
** Though alone it really seems to have no value. If I could, I would set some sort of filter to only select stand-alone versions of the word, but I know that idea already has a bigger whole than the galactic nucleus.
----------------------

While I feel it slightly undermines my point, I'm glad to see that all but one of the words I chose as "blockable" are already "blocked."
