I requested the same thing some several pages back. I wouldn't imagine that it's all that difficult, since the site already tracks whether you've visited a thread or not, so translating it to a forum section shouldn't be that difficult.

Anyway. How do I disable mails from private messages? I already have Profile > Board Preferences > Edit global settings > "Notify me on new private messages" tagged as a no.

As an aside, does anyone know any good firefox plugins for storing private customization of site layouts? There was a question a while back about other themes, so I thought I'd try to experiment some.

Seems like Stylish exists on Firefox as well.
Thanks.

Sure thing. Stylish is what I used when I made the Red / Grey and Papyrus skins. I'm new to both CSS and Photoshop so dont mind the crudeness of them.

I also have a Blue/Grey and a Green/Grey version of the current default skin in works but I've been focused on some other projects recently.

Can you get the search function to allow quotes? Like, if I type "waffle iron", it would search for posts that contain waffle iron, but not just waffle or iron.

edit: and now to delete the evidence of craziness! :plot:

As a very poor workaround, you can search for +waffle +iron. That returns only posts that contain both words. It's poor, because it doesn't require them to be consecutive, like quotes would if it works; but it at least eliminates the posts that have only one of those words, which would help.

That said, quotes probably should work - it's pretty standard for searching. We'll see what Welder can do to hack apart the search function, or install mods to improve it.

the default isn't to at least return posts with both words? that seems wrong and unlike every search function ever.

Yes. That does seem to be the case. (Just tried it.) Why did I think otherwise 10 minutes ago...

Yeah, phpbb's search doesn't do phrases. When you post something, it indexes the words you use so that when someone searches for those words it can easily look up what posts they were used in. It doesn't index phrases (that would be way harder).

Yes, it's annoying, but there's not really an easy way to fix it -- we'd basically need to completely redo the search functionality. As a workaround, you can search on Google with a site:forum.nogoblinsallowed.com specifier.

Would it be possible to have a search by thread function to narrow down results?

It exists, but it's hidden in plain sight. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Under the "Who is Online" box is a "Search For" box. That appears to search only the thread.

Oh.
That's not at all intuitive.

Oh! It's a completely separate search function. I kept trying to find this "Who is online" box on the search page and coming up dry. Not intuitive at all, but at least it's at the bottom of every thread, right?

Should be at the bottom of every page, yes.

"Who is online" is also at the bottom of every page, including forum pages.

Is there a way to customize search.php?search_id=active_topics to display only the forums i'm interested in?

there's not a button that does it to my knowledge, but you can hack it together. if you use the search function and limit it to specific forums, somewhere in the url you'll see "&fid%5B%5D=" something. that's the forum id. you can also find the number in the url for the forum. for instance, the meatboard has a forum number of 13. if you copy that section onto the end of your active topics page for each forum you care about, you get it filtered to the forum or forums you want. for instance, if you wanted to see active topics in the meatboard, you'd go to http://forum.nogoblinsallowed.com/search.php?search_id=active_topics&fid%5B%5D=13. if you wanted to search YMtC and Limited, you'd go to http://forum.nogoblinsallowed.com/search.php?search_id=active_topics&fid%5B%5D=33&fid%5B%5D=17. like I said I don't know how to do this automatically, but until they tell you that you can at least use this as a workaround.

lemme try something:

Wee|A|Table|Appeared|!
-|-|-|-|-
||{rowsp=3}If I wanted
to write this

-|-|-|-|-

nope. that might not be ideal for what you're asking anyway, since it doesn't automatically space out the others, but it doesn't work either so yeah.

On the search page, there's a list of forums you can select for searching. Hold down the Control key (or the weird ⌘ key if you're on a Mac) while selecting forums to search and you should be able to select multiple forums at once.

Right now, you can't. Do you have any suggestions for good ways to make this work without unduly interfering with existing tables?

Two ideas:
  1. enter text like it's 1979: have an unusual sequence of characters (say, \n) that means "insert a newline here"
  2. continuation character: if a line in a table ends on a particular character (say, \) that means "this cell/row isn't over, continue it on the next line"

There are upsides and downsides to each, and I'd be interested in hearing what you'd like to see, and if you have any ideas not inspired by C conventions :shifty:.

razorborne: Yeah, it is much harder to do row-spanning cells than column-spanning cells and have a text-based input format that makes sense. Sorry...

[edit] lol, phpbb interpreted my escape sequences. fixing.
