I know three goblins who can be your back-up dancers!

But I only know them 'cause I wrote about them! :paranoid:

Well then, what you need is some herbal tea and some Netflix!

@ Raven - I'm sorry to hear about all your problems. Sometimes, when it rains, it pours. Hopefully things will improve in coming days.

I don't know how your older computer went kaput - or if you still have it, for that matter. If you do, you might try pulling out the hard drive and putting it into an external drive enclosure, then connecting it to a live PC. If the HDD itself wasn't faulty, you may be able to access the files that were on there.

I had a laptop die about a year and a half ago, which - like a champ! - I hadn't backed-up in the longest time. Mercifully, I was able to salvage some critical things (a few stories, some work-related files, *cough* my wedding photos *cough*) by pulling the HDD out and hooking it up to a different computer.

Horribly.

Herbal tea might have helped. I don't have Netflix, though; if I had had the ability to treat myself to a little TLC instead of doing the "flight of the bumblebee cleaning spree" thing, I would have spent the day on youtube.

@ Raven: that sounds awful. Hope things work out for you, man.

Yup, tried that. Didn't work. The consensus was that the hard drive died. It wasn't a major loss. I lost a few things that were difficult to replace, some work I had done, and the original first few paragraphs of Allo's Fortnight, but I was able to recreate it well enough from memory. I certainly wasn't happy about it at the time, though.

Speaking of which, I think I should back up this computer when I get home tonight...

Ooof. Good luck with the car, in particular, Raven. That really, really sucks.

I need to back up some of the files on here actually... >_> I already lost that Jackie/Trotter fic to an ill-timed overheating incident. Well. I say lost but. I was testing my printer one day and just printed out whatever was in my notebook file since that seemed like a fast convenient thing, and the thing in the notebook file was... that story. So I can technically reconstruct it. So that's good.

But it also means that there's now a VERY explicit description of human/fox sex floating around my room somewhere.

That's... arguably not so good.

Anyway so that's the story of how I'm an idiot, don't back things up enough, and haven't gotten that story to OL yet because Shenanigans.

You have my deepest sympathies. This allergy season has been just grotesque, at least where I live.

I was trying so hard not to do this, but...

Phrasing! Boom!

What does the fox say?
Anything his domme tells him to.

I've gotten paranoid as **** about duplicating stuff as much as I can. I have several places scattered around the net, flash drives, and who knows what else all backing things up, but I haven't backed up my actual computer because when mine die, they usually choose "Suicide by Cop" or something similar.

You know, I've been through several computers in my time, but have never lost data to it? This includes the laptop that was on fire for an unspecified amount of time, blasted with a fire hose, trampled to the point where it looked like a gravel-encrusted plastic brick, and left to bake in the sun for a day before being taken to my local repair shop. Somehow, they managed to burn the entire contents of the My Docs folder on that hard drive (AKA everything I asked to be salvaged) onto a CD for me to load into my next laptop. I'm starting to wonder if I haven't been horribly, unreasonably lucky as far as that goes.

I just sort of... sat here for a bit staring at this.

@Szat:

Yeah dude, someday Lucifer is going to come to collect on whatever bargain you made.

I actually managed to not lose any data either from my last two computer meltdowns.

I mean, in fairness, my old laptop still works. It's just that like. The headphone jack doesn't. And neither does the battery. And the cord collapsed. Uh, and I think the screen was starting to go a little weird. And the wireless card broke so it has to be physically hooked up to get internet. Uh.

But other than that it's great.

But yeah I've been lucky and I should probably be a bit more paranoid given I'm using a computer that's already kinda falling apart after a year and it's running Windows 8, The System That Proves God Has Abandoned His Creation.

Either that, or the three computer "experts" I brought my laptop's hard drive to don't know what they're doing.

Okay, I laughed pretty hard at this...

Also, on a completely unrelated note, why the Sam-hill is there a celestial octopus on google's main page trying to decide between Algeria and Ba'al Juum?

It isn't proof that God abandoned us. It's proof that god exists and is still pissed about that entire Apple thing.
#Steve Jobs never got over Windows beating him to the punch

I just keep all of my most important documents in Dropbox. That has been really useful. Also, since I work together with my wife, we just kept both of our computers hooked to the same Dropbox account, and then it was really simple to pass information back and forth. Heck, you could even use Dropbox and a word processor for some really clumsy instant messaging if you wanted to.

90% of the problems with windows 8 can be fixed in 5 minutes, for free. it's called "Classic Shell". Download it, install it, and make the "metro screen" go away forever in favor of your preferred flavor of start menu. It doesn't excuse Microsoft putting out an OS on desktops and laptops that was clearly meant for freeking tablets, but it's an easy way to get the end-user experience back to a good place.

It's something anyone who doesn't want to deal with apple's comparability issues or Linux's tech-savvy-entry bar (or who has to use modern windows machines for some reason or another) ought to know.
