not only do they not know which creature gets the pumps until they make their blocking decisions, they don't even know how much it's gonna be.

We're ultimately trying to tap out every turn and play threats that scale with our available mana. There is also decent, instant-speed removal, which laughs at combat math. This is ultimately about racing. Playing a 4-mana 1/1 "threat" and then supporting that threat to screw up combat math by holding onto cards is not only bad, it's actively bad. You're basically saying, at minimum, this is "good" because it's lowest performing threshold is that, on turn 5, you can tap it, reveal a card in your hand, and give something +1/+1. That's not worth 3 situational cards.
