Moving through book 11 of Dresden Files. Will probably be followed by Myst: The Book of Atrus. I have & have read the other two multiple times, but just recently ran into Atrus while cruising through a Goodwill the other day.

You sir get an e-highfive for reminding me about the Myst books. I need to look through and see if there are any of them that I havent read yet.

But first I need to finish Gentlemen Bastards, Cloud Atlas, I Robot, Dune...

Damn... I've got my work cut out for me.

You don't have to read cloud atlas consecutively, it reads just as well if you distance yourself from it and treat the individual chapters as short stories.

I almost bought the second gentlemen bastards just now, but saw a new author I wanted to try. Just read London Falling... it's a bit of a bore, but conceptually brilliant. Probably could've been cut down a third or so though. It just sucks when a book you know you're going to like you don't get to liking until about 50% through.

I finished Skin Game by Jim Butcher. I didn't like this one as the other books before, probably the worst from the series. Still a good entertainment, it just cannot escape the problems that all big series have.

Thus far Red Seas Under Red Skies is still quite interesting. It does keep teasing me with hints about the ending though, but I cant say I really mind.

Into Dresden book 12 now. Looks like I may end up wrapping the DF in time for the next Laundry Files book.

I'm going to disagree on it being the worst for me Full moon was the worst and what problems do all big series have and what in your opinion is the perfect number for a book series?

A lot of big series sorta get lost along the way and wander away from what people want to be reading about.

Fool moon is probably my second pick for worst book in the series.

I don't think there is a perfect number. For the same story, I think three is probably the right number. I don't tolerate stories that drag too long. For a series like the Dresden Files, with many small stories, I don't think there is a right number. But I think the series is loosing steam.

About the problems of big series:

- There are too many characters that have to be inserted into the history,
- Protagonist(s) sometimes do(es) extremely bad choices to keep the story flowing,
- Repetition of scenes and dialogues.

About specific problems of the Dresden Files:

- After the book Changes, there is a huge difference in the story composition. There is no more the secret component with the clever ending. Sorry, that's untrue, the author still tries, but it is not able to do one, so no more clever endings after Changes.
- The hook for another story seems to be growing weaker and weaker.

Just my opinions, the series is still very fun and certainly above the average, just not awesome anymore.

I think I read Butcher wants to keep going into the 20s.

edit: On a slightly unrelated note, I just realized that I don't think Bob came up once in book 11.

If I were him I would continue too, after all who wants to kill the goose of the golden eggs. But yes, Changes was the story climax, Ghost Story was good and fresh too, Cold Days was a step down that it is natural after the climax. Skin game just continues the step down trend, but instead of being just a single step down, it was a huge step down.

Aye I was mostly just joking around.

So far Red Seas Under Red Skies is doing quite the good job at holding my attention as well as the first book. Even if there is quite a bit of nautical terminology being flung around for while. It's doing quite a good job at keeping me guessing as well.

The plan is case files (books) hit 20 and then he caps the series with a Big Damn Trio entitled, Hells Bells, Empty Night, Stars and Stones.
