Fire, not to distract too much from your conversation with razorborne, but out of curiosity, if we were to start an M:EM based play by post rpg, how would that... well... work? I mean, I foresee the same problems that razorborne and Lily are citing with regards to visiting a random forum for one thread, and I'm not sure, no matter where we'd post it, that we'd get any interest from folks not already invested in the project.

Not that we've been talking at all about doing this, but it might be something we'd want to do in the future, and I'm curious about how you'd handle those logistics or if you have any insight. (Similarly, I think part of the reason that none of us have attempted Plane and Character Creation Contests is because the actual placement of the threads is sort of an issue. Well, that, and apparent disinterest--the community's definitely shifted focus since the move. See also: I'm not really sure how we should be advertising calls for short stories on these boards. On the Wizards boards we'd create advertising threads in other boards but I'm not sure how you folks feel about us doing that here.)

These seem like related issues, maybe, that might be worth considering alongside 3CM and the YMTC games.

My :two: about the various other questions.

1) YMTC games stay in YMTC. It's more about the actual designing and the games themselves perfectly fit the forum description. participate in Magic card-making projects, contests, and games,

2) The Limited community drafts are more about learning than they are about playing. So are fine there.
If you would make a Rochester draft with multiple players and play out those decks, you're more in MPFG-territory and go to PbP. But I don't see those threads in there.

3) if one were to try to run a magic tournament, where would it go? the constructed forum (or limited if it's limited) makes the most sense to me, but that wouldn't really work toward a cohesive MPFG ideal so I don't know what your thoughts are.
Kind of depends on the type of tournament, though if it's all on the forum you already know my answer, right razor? ;)

My suggestion would be to make a topic both on M:EM and the Setup Zone of PbP.
There are probably a bunch of PbP-ers who would like the new M:EM setting and would not see it because they never visit M:EM.

The game could be placed in the normal RP-area when it starts, because then the M:EM-players would also already be near that area.

Creation Contest can just be within M:EM as far as I'm concerned. Those are pretty much closer to the YMTC-threads than they are to 3cm.

Why not create a "Magic Games" forum and merge it with the Limited Drafts? It might also inspire other Magic-themed games.

the model I was thinking was a start-up/organization thread on-board with games played over let's say legal online platforms. like I said, I think honest-to-god play-by-post magic is a dead medium.

that said, I wouldn't be opposed to putting it in the set-up threads forum although I think it would work better in the constructed forum. (assuming it was constructed.)

That seems pretty fine to me on Constructed/Limited.
Again, just like M:EM, perhaps both on there and on PbP Setup because there are some old-time Magic players that do not keep up with all the latest stuff but still play games on PbP and would like some playing of Magic again.

Spoiler

I think the community for it has long gone to other forms of playing. It was huge 10 years ago, but nowadays there are a lot of alternative ways to play Magic games. My original gripe was posting games.

My main issue with 3cm is not as much the situation compared to stuff like YMTC, Limited or M:EM (there are really solid cases to be made to keep that stuff where it already is and/or will be), but the relation to the Card Chain Game which apparently has been going around in MG longer than I have been a PbP mod here. I just never knew about it but my gut said that it should probably be in Forum Posting Games.
I do have a Magic related posting game in the works, but I'm holding off until the final decision before I'll create that thread.

I guess the YMTC games are technically posting games, but I think they're primarily a "I want to make a card right now" type of deal. Rationally, I'd say they belong in ymtc.

I don't care for them and wouldn't mind if they disappeared from ymtc. However, I can't say that my support for it was serious. I'm assuming that they are an important attraction for other people, whom I'd rather not see leave.

I didn't see this offered as an idea unless i missed it..but why not a simple redirect link? Meaning, you make the OP and then it gets moved to PbP leaving behind a stickied link?

EDIT: that way all you gotta do is click on it to check for whatever, and then if there's nothing new just hit the back button.

Glad to see you like the idea of a shadow topic, which was brought up by several people. ;)

(That said, the problem with the shadow is that it never "bumps" when new posts are made; hence why I said it would need to be refreshed from time to time.)

So, there's no way to do a shadow topic that can be bumped? I'd bet Welder could find one. That way we could have it in both forums without confusion, kinda like those announcements that show up on all forums whenever Admin has news to share.

There is no standard way, no. I've tried to pin a shadow topic and it's not possible. If a mod exists, and Welder can find said mod, I'd be very willing to look at it.

You and your silly tests. But I want a shadow topic that can be bumped. It would satisfy my need for copies.

Hm, couldn't that get a little unwieldy as the forum grows? Like, how many shadow threads are too many shadow threads? I know Althanus doesn't like an overabundance of stickied topics, which have a similar functionality... and I'm kind of inclined to agree with his aversion.

Obviously this is like... for way in the future, but I think it's worth at least thinking about now, since we do want to expand quite a bit.

Shadow threads of shadow threads that link to shadow threads. A giant shadow thread that links to a sticky where all the shadow threads are linked. Then the forums gets sucked into a black hole. It's all your fault.

Right now the general staff consensus is that it makes more sense to keep 3CM in the posting games section. I think making posts in the magic general area announcing new games is a great idea though, and we are going to monitor activity in the pbp section; if interest seems lacking as a result of the current placement, it isn't something completely immutable.
