It's also a pain in the neck to perform. Not overly difficult to perform once you're familiar with the tools, but keeping things straight is quite hard.

This one was tougher than normal since I also had to jump through a bunch of hoops to make sure that posts that touched on both subjects were duplicated and edited...ugh.

So, on the original question, here's my thoughts. I'm not speaking for the entire mod team here - just me. And please forgive any typos - my employer's firewall blocks the site so I have to use my phone...

Bitch should be left unfiltered, much like "chink" currently is, because while it most definitely can be used as an insult it also has non- insult uses. Mods will treat this word like they treat chink, dick, dyke, etc

Slut and Whore should be added to the filter. While there may be other uses, those other uses are rare and usually still rely on the "main" definition anyway.

One of Keeper's recent posts is what changed my mind, but finding it to quote on my phone is too difficult for me. Opinions are still welcome, of course.

Swearing is a really important part of one's life. It would be impossible to imagine going through life without swearing and without enjoying swearing... There used to be mad, silly, prissy people who used to say swearing was a sign of a poor vocabulary -such utter nonsense. The people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies and the kind of person who says swearing is a sign of a poor vocabulary usually have a pretty poor vocabulary themselves... The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or a lack of verbal interest or -is just a **** lunatic... I haven't met anybody who's truly shocked at swearing, really, they're only shocked on behalf of other people. Well, you know, that's preposterous... or they say 'it's not necessary'. As if that should stop one doing it! I think the only people who get butthurt about swearing are the ones who seem to find themselves superior for not doing so. Seriously, swearing does not limit your vocabulary. Swear words are more like sentence enhancers than anything. They add spice. It's not good to put spice on every food, but for some foods, you need spice. Ya feel me?

I've said before: I can - and often do - swear like a drunken pirate with Tourrette's Syndrome. So I'm personally certainly not against swearing. And I like your analogy to spices, to be honest. That said, I also don't generally need to swear in order to discuss games.

We have very few curse words in the filter. Almost everything that's in the filter are racial or sexual-orientation slurs. For that reason, the filter isn't going to go away. But it will evolve over time. There's always a chance that at some point somebody makes a really good argument in favor of taking **** or **** out of the filter. But for now, that's staying. I'd really prefer to focus on whether or not we need to include "slut" and / or "whore" just as we've included the whole gaggle of slurs already.

I don't think slut or whore should go into the filter. They're only really offensive if you point them at someone; but then again, that's the case with any flame (idiot, retard, etc), and those aren't in the filter.

Penny Arcade had the solution on their forums that the only insult that could be used is "silly goose." Anything else and they'd get warnings and or get banned. I'm not saying we should do that here, but it was a pretty creative and funny solution, and even if people kept trying to flame all they could say is: "STFU you silly goose!"
