There was further elaboration of summoning in a really really really superb and heartbreaking story known as "Loraan's Smile" published in the anthology "Colors of Magic". In it, the artificer Feldon tried to learn about summoning, and part of that was getting to know a wizard for a few weeks. At the end of it, he tried to summon a replicate of the wizard. All the details were there, but they were distorted, some exaggerated, and others nearly non-existent. It comes from the fact that Feldon did not know the wizard really really well, so the image he conjured in his mind was influenced by his perception of the man and the purpose he needed.

I haven't read that one, but I have that collection on my shelf. I may have to check that story out.
[EDIT]: Just looked at it. It's by Jeff Grubb. Definitely going to have to read that one now. I really enjoyed The Brothers War.

I still can't believe they didn't play up a darker-side changeling angle in Shadowmoor. So much potential for mayhem...

I think it's because the changelings were inherently too goofy and... well, dumb as bricks.
The only thing we ended up with as a darker reflection were the mimics, but they were hardly the same thing when you get to the core of it.

I never read the books, so I don't know the details but from what I've seen and read about them the mimics are decent dark-changelings, complete with a theme of being not-so-intelligent. And, to be fair, a lot of things were goofy in Lorwyn.

Something I never quite understood, what's so special about Garruk's "connecting" with the beasts and other creatures if Planeswalkers (and presumably other mages) can just summon creatures?

Man in retrospect there's a lot to be disappointed with in Lormoor. :/

I think the thing with Garruk is that he seems to very specifically rely on defeating them in battle first and then summoning them after he's gained their strength essentially in combat.
