Greetings, beautiful mutants!

I know that our cup already runneth over at the moment, but I have one more story which I am excited to drop into this mix. It's a little ditty by Ruwin and yours truly which I am calling "Friends and Killers," and it features Aloise, Fisco, and Beryl.

This one has a bit of heft to it, so I will keep my own rambling to a minimum, save for expressing my sincere thanks to Ruwin for his numerous and irreplaceable contributions.

As ever, I hope that you enjoy what you read. And, as ever, your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Cheers to you,
-OL

Looks interesting! Aloise is busy lately, it seems!

I'll start in on this when I can. I can't promise that I can work through 15,000 words tonight, but I'll probably take this in sections and let you know what I think. Looking forward to it, though.

Okay, I *have* to ask. Is this a teacher thing, and you can just eyeball the word count? Or is there a way to check?

Because I will be super impressed if that was a guesstimate.

I am so sorry.

Did we ever figure out if there's a way to do large print on these?

I just use the zoom function on chrome. Should work on other browsers, yea? Ups the size of the font but keeps everything on the page a similar size, so its not actually zooming. Just sort of. Making the font bigger.

Ehehehe Squinty_eyes. I get it. I GET IT.

It's my superpower. Not very useful, admittedly. I'm a lot like Turkey Volume Guessing Man in that respect.

No, actually I just quickly copied and pasted this into Word, which tells me immediately at the bottom of the screen. I do that so that I can have a copy even if my internet goes out, which happens occasionally here, though fortunately not as much as it used to.

Anyway, I've got some reading to do!

I think I've mentioned this before, but... the name is a joke because I'm Asian, not because I get headaches reading long amounts of text off of computer monitors.

See, I would have totally believed that. I had a calculus professor who could face the class while writing *perfectly* on the blackboard behind her with one hand and twirling the pointer like a baton in the other hand.

It was like something out of The Exorcist.

I just assume that instructors can do these sorts of things. Kind of like how I can eyeball a plate of cheese fries and immediately know how bad I will feel after I eat them.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the story!

I can write perfectly (or at least, no different from my usual handwriting, which is admittedly pretty bad) without looking at the paper. I just need to glance down at the starting point so I keep it straight each time I start a new line. I used to write poetry like that while riding along in long road trips at night. It was very useful.

As a note of what I've read:

I'm always amused that the same precious metals are worth the same thing across planes. Gold pieces are always gold pieces to people, no matter how far and wide they travel. I always like to assume that those gold pieces are worthless on certain worlds since they might function on a barter trade system for items and work they find valuable, or worthless because another world has a plethora of that metal. That and I've never understood why gold is so valuable since it's an incredibly soft metal that has limited uses.

@Orcish: Ahh, I see. I thought it was slightly odd that you had an entire section of your story featuring only two characters that weren't originally yours. Still good stuff, though.

@squinty-eyes: I assume that gold is worthless on some planes, but it works well as a sort of "mostly universal" currency. As for why it's valuable in real life, it's the same as precious gems. There is no inherent value (well, diamonds are used as cutting edges, I guess), just the value people and society have placed on them owing to their rarity and their beauty. Same with gold and silver. It glitters, it's shiny, and it's difficult to come by, so hey, it must have value! We're a strange species.

We're magpies is what we are.

On the subject of gold, my mind always goes to the words of noted expert Auric Goldfinger: "All my life, I have been in love with its color, its brilliance, its divine heaviness."
