Here is another in the line of stories that in some way involve Raiker Venn, Gentleman Poet. Enjoy!

The Destitute Seeker

Raven, I've got this queued-up behind a couple of your other pieces. Just a quick note to say that I look forward to this.

Weeeeeeeeell looks like OL was right to be suspicious after the last story. O_O I should've paid more attention to his suppositions!

I like this! It's a good little... uh... I dunno, soft-horror story I wanna call it? Solid poem, solid story, and a great example of a story with an unpleasant ending that's not a drag to read. I like the fact, too, that while we're getting hints at what's going on with your main man here, you haven't spelled anything out in detail. It's fun to have an air of mystery there.

Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it!

Yeah, there's stuff going on with Raiker. There's probably more to him than there appears to be, but he's certainly establishing something of an MO here. But what is he really up to? What does she really want? And why is he so sexy? :paranoid:

Thanks for reading!

Er...

...

Hm.

Ok. Ok, I think I...

No.

Hm...

Alright, you got me. Raiker Venn is definitely creepy. I'm keeping my eye on him. :takei: Be warned...

Yeah, he's kind of grabbed my attention, too. Which is probably why I've written two stories that involve him rather than work on what I SHOULD be writing...

I kinda like him, though! And I really want to know what his relationship to his poems really is.

Ah-ha, so the plot thickens, as it were.

(I also now have "define nepenthe" in my Google search log, so hooray for vocabulary building.)

Seven Barrels was actually the name of a brewpup where a lot of my friends and I used to go during college, and - similar to the tavern here - it was noteworthy for it's complete lack of service (unless you somehow managed to catch the attention of the staff), so that brought back funny memories.

Also, there's a one-step-ahead-of-the-law quality to Raiker's coming and going in this story which I will be interested to see whether or not it repeats in the future.

Thanks again for posting, Raven!

That's one of those funny little coincidences that I love! As I said in my response to your comments on The Jaded Cat, I just really enjoy naming taverns and inns and so forth, and the Seven Barrels is just what came to mind. Funny it should have any meaning!

Thanks for reading, and as always, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

[EDIT]Also, "nepenthe" is a great word! Poe uses it in The Raven. "'Wretch,' I cried, 'thy God hath lent thee-by these angels he hath sent thee / Respite-respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore! / Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!' / Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore.'"

This finally prompted me to look up the word because there's also an Opeth song called Nepenthe and I hadn't gotten around to figuring out what they mean.

...I still don't know what the song is about though. Because progressive metal.

Yeah, it's very much not a word in common parlance, but I enjoy it. It's a nice poetic word.

A couple years ago, when I was working on RB: Blitz, I had to play the entirety of Rush's 2112 over and over again for something like a week straight, because we let you play the entire album as a single medley and it was easily our worst-case test case for a long song.

I still have no idea what it was about. :)

Oh man that's actually based on an Ayn Rand novel and the story follows a character in a totalitarian society where all art is regulated who finds a guitar under a waterfall and despite its rather unsavory origins the actual narrative is wow I just realized that I'm a huge dork even in comparison to people who spend their free time writing fanfiction of a trading card game.

Let's be honest - this is not a contest which any of us want to start playing.
