Hello all!

I've recently started a project over at You Make the Card called Starstill. There are 11 threads in all, and they're kind of drowning out the forum. I was wondering if we could have a subforum entitled "Starstill: A Community Set", and have all the Starstill threads moved to that subforum? It would help immensely when we are done with the set and want to have ICD threads for it.

Here are all the Starstill threads that would need to be moved:

The Set So Far (Sticky)
General Discussion and Planning (Sticky)

White
Blue
Black
Red
Green
Colorless
Multicolor
Lands

Reprints

Thanks so much in advance for any assistance anyone is able to offer!

Sincerely,
ParadOxymoron

Hey, not a terrible idea. But creating a subforum for every set that people start is going to be.... chaotic if it does happen. What about a "Custom Community Set" subforum with tags for each custom set that makes use of it? Just a counter-offer, though I'm sure Welder or someone will have to actually make the thing if Admin and the other mods approve. You know, otherwise with all the custom sets that get started and never finished we'd have more subforums for YMtC than I can make copies of Restoration Angel.

I'm not suggesting that we make a subforum for every set anybody makes. Think of it like the Big Card Project.

I love stuff that generates content, so this gets a thumbs up from me.

That said, I would be hesitant to sticky threads specific to certain projects. My "counter proposal" there would be for somebody to write a general "introduction" thread that we can sticky; that thread can include information about the forum in general, as well as summaries of each project - with as many links as necessary of course.

Setting up tags for a forum is pretty easy, and adding new ones after they're initially setup is just as easy.

Give me a name and description for the forum, and I'll take care of it this week. I'll set things up initially with two tags: Starstill and Other. If there should be other tags besides those, let me know that as well. And I nominate Par for writing the intro thread. ;)

Thoughts?

Name: Community Sets
Description: A place to plan, discuss, and create sets together with the rest of the community.

~~~
Introduction thread title: Community Sets: A Primer
~~~

Welcome to the Community Sets subforum!

Why Are We Here?

Currently on No Goblins Allowed's You Make the Card forum, we have a couple of contests running. But these contests aren't just like any contest. They're designed to have the winning cards of each round all put together at the end of their run to form sets. This has proven to be a sensational community experience, drawing designers together to make something that's greater than the sum of its parts.

This is the subforum for projects of that nature. If you have a set you want to build with people, here is the place to gather designers. If you have a set you built and want a group of people to help playtest and develop it for you, this is also the place for that. This is not the place for sets you want to build by yourself, and are still designing.

The Directory:

Starstill (run by ParadOxymoron) — This is a project with a thread for each color. The winner of each round in each thread posts a criterion for the next round in that thread. Each winning card is added to the set.

Set in a plane that never moves, where one side is a completely frozen and the other side is a hellish wasteland where the sun never sets, this is a Card Types Matters set, with various mechanical subthemes including artifacts vs. enchantments, split cards, and short term vs. long term.

Starstill threads

Chocolate (run by TPzombieW) — A contest where the community designs a set code-named Chocolate, with the premise being that the set had already been created, but then was accidentally deleted, and now has to be reconstructed from Multiverse comments. Usually the prompts include two comments for which the contestants have to make a card to fit the prompt, as well as a picture from the NGA YMtC Art Vault. Contestants design cards for any or all of the prompts, and the best fit for each prompt is added to the set.

Themes for the set so far include nature vs. civilization, Timmy love, and Champion from the Lorwyn block.

Chocolate threads

You Could Be Next!

If you'd like to get a project started, post a thread for it in this subforum and I'll add it to the directory!

As a suggestion...
Make one thread stickied that is a hub to every Set OP. Like, its sole purpose would be to collect the set names and provide links to their overall set thread (and from those the specific threads).

EDIT: Wow, talk about super ninja'd
I started reading Parad's post, thought of this, then finished reading the post, and feel dofusy. :p

I don't even know where this is supposed to be put, but I don't see it as having great relevance to anything. Seems like it puts an unnecessary restriction on theme of the subsection.
And not to be overly cynical or anything, but I'm expecting your thing to hit the dirt when we hit round 15 or so, so let's wait before making any overly bold statemetns on how great it is and all.

Is there a particular reason it can't have personal sets in it? I can almost assure you that newer members will make the assumption that they can, ugly bold letters notwithstanding. Besides, where do you draw the distinction between regular feedback and active development?

I would see no reason at all why it couldn't have personal sets. Again, I'm OK with the concept but it'll need to be a broad theme.

I appreciate the input, Mown and Alt. I'd like to hear from others as well. Feel free to chime in without thoughts on the idea - whether you agree or disagree.

I haven't said anything about it so far because I feel I'm too far removed from the topic; I don't think I've ever contributed to YMTC. I'm with those that say it should be wide-reaching like a "YMTSet" subforum -- though I'm wondering how often sets vs. individual cards (or groups of cards without any aspirations of being in a set) are made.

I do think that's a fair question. I guess something else to keep in mind is that things aren't set in stone - if we create the sub-forum, it gathers activity for three months, and then fades away, we can always merge things back into the YMtC forum. So whatever decision we end up with, it's reversible later - we can undo it, or we can add it later if we opt not to right now.

Thanks for chiming in Luna. Anybody else have opinions?

Well, it's also worth noting that Index Threads are inherently of somewhat more limited use, in that they can only be organized and reorganized by mods or, to a lesser extent, the OP.

On the other hand, if there was something like, I don't know, a live Wiki integrated into NGA that could serve as an index, that would allow for more fluid archiving of materials. If such a thing were in the works, it might be worth holding back, at the very least, on creating a central hub thread for the subforum until there was some public announcement of when such a thing might be released.

It's just worth considering the wider range of tools that are at least potentially available to us, or might be in the future.

That said, I see no reason to think small with this. M:EM got to where it is today in part because we encouraged people to be ambitious to the point of delusion. And while there are a few large failed projects where that didn't work so well for us, on the whole it's served us well. Which I guess makes this both a vote for the subforum itself and a vote for pushing people to add their big, expansive, ambitious, possibly ludicrously unrealistic individual projects to the roster.

I don't mind if personal sets were in such a subforum, as long as you don't force us to put them in there.

I believe the only time we would strongly request you have to move them is if there were a number of threads open about the single set that took up the majority of the first page's threads, like how Starstill is doing now. At that point, it is a bit disruptive to the other user of YMtC.

For the record, it looks casually to me like Starstill is at the point of disruptive saturation that the Voting Threads in M:EM got, leading us to make a subforum for them. So, by that metric and precedent it'd be reasonable to split the boards.

Second Draft:

Name: You Make the Set
Description: A place to plan, discuss, and create sets together with the rest of the community.
Introduction thread title: You Make the Set: A Primer

~~~
Welcome to the You Make the Set subforum!
Why Are We Here?
Cards do not exist in a vacuum. When cards are made at Wizards of the Coast, they are printed in Sets of about 249 (large) or 145 (small) at a time. Three or four Sets are then put together to make a Block, consisting of anywhere from 500 to 600 cards, depending on how big or small the Sets are. Then, two Blocks are put together with a Core Set to produce a Standard Environment—an amount of cards equal to about 1443 cards, which was the number of cards in the official Standard Environment at the time of this post's writing. Another way cards can be organized together is in Cubes of anywhere from 360 to 720 or more cards, which have less unity between cards than Sets and Blocks do, but are still meant to be drafted together as a unit.
This is the subforum for projects that put multiple cards together to create something beyond the sum of their parts. While many of the cards you'll see in the main forum are simply ICDs, often with no rarity, the cards you post in here will be part of a greater whole. Whether the project in question is built by the community together or by you alone, this is the place for discussion of how that project is coming along.
So, is this happening, or what? I feel bad for people like Libe and DS who aren't participating in Starstill and have to post in a Starstill-saturated forum. And I worked very hard on collecting all the links in that second draft.
It is under discussion, and hopefully there will be a consensus in the near future.
