Depending on the overall tone and modernity of the narration, either "Goatee" or "small, pointed beard"

And, of course, whether you are describing it or having a character describe it. If it's either first-person or a character literally saying it, that would also determine what you use.

But yeah, I think Tevish has got the right idea here. Personally, I don't see the word "goatee" as jarring, but I don't know how modern a term it may be.

I don't think the word would bother me.

Frankly, if you care about having the reader imagine exactly the right kind of beard, more problematic is the fact that people seem to use "goatee" to refer to anything from an actual goatee to a Van Dyke to a circle beard.

I think I would go with "Neat, close clipped beard" though I might mention something about the chin.

And welcome to our little corner of the boards, Squinty! Glad to see you interested :D

I wander around the vast majority of the boards here on NGA, but I have an issue with reading extended writing on screens like computer monitors. High blood pressure makes my vision blur when I try to read some of these works, so I often don't get to finish enjoying them. I do have a genuine interest in hanging around here, but it takes me a long time to read a single short story. Ah well. Oddly enough, I have absolutely no problems doing a lot of typing, but that's mostly because my proficiency with a keyboard is very low and I spend more time looking at my fingers typing than at the screen itself.

Squinty, (wow your name makes more sense now) is there anything we could do to improve accessibility to our works?

Not really, unless you converted them to Nook-friendly pdf's so I could read them on my wife's old Nook that doesn't use a backlit screen.

Also, my user name doesn't come from my difficulty reading computer screens. It's the fact that I'm Asian.

HAH, alright :P

Actually, though, we DO have Nook-friendly files for some of our projects.

All three parts of Seasons of Dusk: An Innistrad Anthology are available in epub format, which should be compatible with Nooks. Fragments: An Alara Anthology is also available as a PDF. I haven't gotten around to building an e-book version of that yet, though. It's... a lot of work >_<

Actually, I believe I should be able to turn our works into pdfs relatively painlessly. Give me a few moments to see if I can do so with our longest single work, Two Bullets and a Pocketful of Hate. I should be right back.

EDIT: And here it is:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1la6fqM ... JEPwAmbEe/

I believe that should get you directly to the PDF version of Two Bullets, let me know if you are able to download it or if you have any issues; I set the sharing to "Anyone on the web can view", but I don't know if that means you can download it easily or not.

Gotta love a free online pdf converter that can send things directly to your Drive.

EDIT2: Changed the url. Two Bullets PDF is now indented as well.

Just tested it via my drive. It works just fine. I just wish we could see statistics for downloads/readership on google drive. It's pretty ridiculous that it doesn't have that functionality.

What did you use for the conversion, Luna?

http://www.freepdfconvert.com/

Now, keep in mind 90% of the works backed up to the Archivist's Drive have all the html tags to work properly here on NGA, so to convert it in a pretty presentation, you've got to remove the tags and adjust things as necessary (applying italics, bold, centering, etc.)

DANG IT I FORGOT TO INDENT TWO BULLETS!

Removing the tags are easy, though; just replace all [p] tags with nothing, then search out [i], [b], [u], and [center] tags to adjust them before replacing them as well.

Oh, and the site works with a large variety of document types.

EDIT: Bada-bing, bada-boom, here's The Hermit's Burden in pdf form.

EDIT: And here's Planes of the Dual-Walkers, pdf format.

Awesome!

The nice thing about this, too, is that with PDFs in the archives already, if we decide we want to make fancier versions of the PDFs at some point it'll actually be very easy to just make new PDFs and update the existing files in the archives. That's how I've been handling the big anthologies--I've been uploading revisions to the same URL space each time I need to change something.

So, the first question I was going to ask was whether it was worth it to make pdf files of everything in the Archives, including short things like A Day in the Life of an Obstinate Baloth, but the answer to that is already yes, so that's that question answered.

HOWEVER! If I'm going to make pdf files for all the Works (I wouldn't think dossiers and style guides [minus a few short stories that got snuck into them] would need pdf files), should I make another folder in the Archivist's Drive for all these pdfs, to keep the main bulk of the Archived materials less cluttered?

Can you make epub versions while you're at it? :P (Kidding)

Is this going to be a huge amount of work for you? I mean, you already take on a lot of work; I wouldn't want you to have another monumental task ahead of you.

Hello, everyone!

I apologize for my absence/sparse posting habits as of late. Life has been weird. O_o

A quick summary:

-My brother got engaged (!!!), and his fiancee moved in to my mom's house as the plan the wedding in Vegas.
-My mom's cousin moved ALSO in to her house, and since there was limited space to begin with, I moved in with my sister down the street, temporarily.
-I don't take well to new sleeping arrangements, and so my insomnia flared up and I was lucky to nab 3-4 hours a night.
-(My nephew is adorable, and that's all there really is to say on the matter)
-The old witch who harasses me at work is retiring! (!!!)
-Lastly (and here's the kicker and main reason for my absence) my mom's cousin robbed her house, stole her car, and got all the way to Montana before they caught him and he subsequently attempted to hang himself in jail. Needless to say, the last week has been "emotionally charged" and rather stressful. As I write this, I am looking at a plane ticket to Montana so that I can pick up my mom's car and drive it back home tomorrow.

Obviously, I'm in a soap opera. It is the only explanation. (Also, the internet at my sister's house was REALLY spotty. Really, REALLY spotty. Oh lord, I've never been so frustrated in my life.)

Fortunately, after tomorrow, life should settle back down to normal. In order to cope, I have put a complete stop on most of my writing projects, because I have only so much willpower to spend on them at the moment. To anyone whom I have promised some form of written thing: I am sorry, but it's probably not going to happen now or even in the near future. At the moment, I am devoting all of my leftover energy towards writing things that I find therapeutic. Aloise fits the bill nicely, so expect another slice of life story eventually, in a similar vein as The Hermit's Burden.

I am optimistic that things will work out for the best, eventually. My mom's cousin should wake up from his coma soon, and it is my hope that he is put into psychiatric care. I am now back to my regular living arrangements, and am looking forward to my brother's wedding as much as I look forward to any family gathering - not at all, but it will be good to see some of my more distant and favorite cousins again.

Right! And there is my progress report for anyone who was wondering where I wandered off to. It's weird the sort of things that pile up all at one time, and I am constantly impressed and perturbed at the complete impassivity with which life just throws things at you. Life, in this case being a monkey of some kind? Like a chimp? My power of metaphor is escaping me, so it's a good time to stop talking.

I appreciate you all, and thanks for posting so many interesting stories for me to read! :)

Ruwin, we love you, man! Any time you need to talk or vent or be distracted, I'm sure any one of us (or all of us on this board together) would be more than happy to indulge you. As for your writing, we will all (more or less) patiently await your return, so no need to force anything. I'm glad things are starting to look up, and I hope they continue to do so!

Prof. Farnsworth- Monkeys aren't Donkeys you oaf!
