I'll have to check that out. I really wanted to like reading GoT, but, I just couldn't get through the 5th (I think) book.

Partway through the second book it sorta goes on a little tangent for a bit, but it's coming back around so I'll withold overall judgement on book two until I'm done. But the first one was good enough I bought the second for the kindle withing five minutes of finishing.

A Wise Man's Fear is very good early on, and then he ends up going off on multiple separate adventures before eventually getting back to where he actually wants to be. This causes the book to have really weird pacing at some points.

We are going to have to disagree then, because as far as I am concerned there is such a thing as too much attention to detail. Whether or not the parts being discussed are relevant to the story, which most of them are, in no way means they aren't boring as heck with really bad pacing. Since they are boring as heck, that is a valid criticism.

If this was Tolkien youd have a more valid argument.

I think you miscounted something. The book itself doesn't even have 1200 pages, let alone 12000. I think it is 700 and something? The part in question was about 1/5 of that, so 144 sounds about right.

And I completely agree that Tolkien has the problem in question. The only book Tolkien ever wrote without parts like that is The Hobbit. Even the Lord of the Rings, which is the only other thing he has written that I have liked, has too much attention to too much detail as a problem in 2 or 3 parts per book.

And Martin has the same problem as well. I agree with that too. That is why Game of Thrones is the only thing he has written that I could stand. Even then, rereading it is something I only ever did once.

The math is for the kindle version and is counted perfeftly fine.
Name of the Wind

If three of the most well recieved fantasy writers bore you so....you may be in the wrong genre. Have you tried sci-fi? There a ton of those that focus on the flashy stuff without bogging things down with bits like character growth or plot.

Sometimes I wonder why John Green isn't my best friend. Also, why can I never remember how to embed YouTube videos?

You and me both. Speaking of which, I'm reading Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo for Nerdfighter book club. It's been depressing and makes me never ever ever want to live in poverty.

Moving through book 11 of Dresden Files. Will probably be followed by Myst: The Book of Atrus. I have & have read the other two multiple times, but just recently ran into Atrus while cruising through a Goodwill the other day.

No stop reading Dresden Files..read ALL of the Dresden files...you have four books (3 if you don't count side jobs since it's a collection) before you are up to speed

I'm tempted to do just that. I've got some scifi I want to get some time in for, but I keep getting sucked into the next DF instead.
