I rather like that, though I might call Tungsten for the base: heavy, hard, and nearly impossible to melt. Palladium does have the advantage, though, of being the colorless myr, which is an edge over Platinum (motto: "The other silvery-white precious metal").

There are stranger calls, of course, if it's to be more striking. Another alternative would be ensorceled mercury: keeping its shape perfectly due to spellcraft, but flowing constantly, the lattice of the five metals floating upon its impossible surface. Of course, Quicksilver is often associated with blue due to its liquid-ness. And there are, of course, the wholly fictitious metals. No Darksteel, since this has no ties whatsoever to mirrodin, but... geez, does Magic have any other "special" metals? Something along the lines of Orichalcum.

I could see the metals being used in a celtic knot-esque design, each interweaving with its neighbors.

Well, you run an entirely different risk in using Quicksilver.

There is Thran Metal, Mizzium, and Etherium, but all of those are equally tied to worlds as Darksteel.
Sadly, one of the ways I feel Magic falls down is in their desire to separate themselves from DnD and other fantasy properties, so as a consequence, we lack things like Mythril, Adamantine, and Orichalcum.

Though... Darksteel might yet exist elsewhere in the grand scope of things. Still suffers the problem of being planar bound but...

Re: the amulet's form: I suppose I can understand that original design, but I think I'm with Barinellos on this one, in that using metals would be more unique. If you do go with a Celtic knot-like design, though, I can see not needing a base. The amulet could look the same on both sides (except that on one side the color pie would be counter-clockwise).

I'm torn between making a Simpson's reference or a Mass Effect 3 reference.

Mostly though, I just wanted to bump this up a bit and see if you'd had any other ideas.
It'd be nice to have another artifact in the archives after all.

I've been at work all day and I never bother checking it when I haven't voted for a bit.
