This is going to serve as our introduction thread and possibly a general project bulletin and shop talk thread, at least until we decide to do something else.

Having one wouldn't be a problem, but I suspect it would function differently than the flavor board one.

Probably. Maybe more along the lines of a "here's who we are, here's what we're working on" sorta thread? Possibly a place to talk generally about the overall state of the project, what we want to do next, calls for collaboration, that sort of thing?

I've had someone else that I've been gently farming for an appearance here. It'd be good to have somewhere for people to introduce themselves, but it should definitely not be a place for discussion. Strictly Q&A and introductions.

Hm, I wonder if this other person is the same person I'm farming >_> That'd be... hilariously stupid, eh?

Although I suppose it's better than one of us actively undoing the other's work, which is also totally a thing that we could do via the magic of shared social media accounts.

Well, it MIGHT prove a decent place to discuss things like writing technique and philosophy, things of that nature.

No, this one is coming from Salvation.

I... don't think it's something that we need. Anything broad enough to fill the introduction thread would usually be too broad to be much good, and anything more specific is probably coming up because of a specific reason, in which case it probably has a place where it'd be relevant.

Or it could be just plain hilarious. I smell a movie plot!

I think an introductions thread would be great.

I think a kind of general, "shop talk" thread could also be useful, although I think it would be a separate thing from the introductions thread. It might be nice to have a place to bat around questions along the lines of "how do you approach a major plot rewrite?" or "can anyone recommend some books with really good dialogue?" or "would someone give me a quick sanity check on X?" - crafty-type questions which are more general than a specific project but probably don't need whole threads of their own.

But I can also see why people might not want to gum-up the board with too many multitasking threads.

There might be an advantage to having a couple non-project threads, just to keep activity up when we're not posting/reviewing specific works. And a shop thread would be a good resource for newer writers who aren't sure how to start writing.

Heck, it could be useful for old writers who are still coming to grips with this whole business. I certainly pick up a lot from you guys, even just through osmosis.

Also, Luna, I may have found an assistant for you. Will see if zie shows up here. Fingers crossed.

I've actually had an idea to start a thread "What I've Been Reading About Writing" for a while now, but I've only had like 3 non-poni related links to share, and I'd been agonizing whether it would be more at-home in one of the other sub-forums.

I remember a thread Tevish started back on the mothership (which I may or may not have floating around on my external hard drive, I don't recall), Most Common Mistakes of Writers, which would be/is immensely useful for M:EMbers, though I still have to wonder how we could actually justify having it here?

Name: Tevish Szat

I'm the forum ancient, and have a big attachment to Dead, Dying, and Recovering worlds. So I'm probably not the right person to ask for a plane that doesn't have "Apocalypse" penciled in somewhere on its timeline. I also have some unconventional, though not unique beliefs about tech level in M:tG fantasy settings, so if you want somewhere where blackpowder weapons are possible or that has trains I might be involved. Though oddly, I never really got involved in Jakkard. When it comes to characters, I'm a bit more optimistic: I've created a happy and functioning couple, a non-estranged pair of siblings, and a neowalker who looking back on him really has a bit of the Doctor -- characters with a zest for life and who are mostly good people. Then we get to the villains I design. Let's just say when I bring out my brights, I don't leave the darks at home.

M:EM Properties (not a comprehensive list... I think)
Zent
Ikass (With others)
Keter
Taramir
Adrisar
Larasa Farleth & Morgan of Voor
Atalan & Katalin
Ellia the Endbringer

In the Works/Implied Canon
Illarion Vale
Ashkanar
Kadaris (Needs help!)

I updated the FAQ on Tumblr and G+. We should probably stick that somewhere on this forum.

I really liked reading Tevish's little M:EM self-introduction a few posts back, so I'm going to do one as well.

Don't like it? Well, tough! What are you going to do about it? Not read it?

(Actually, come to think of it, that's probably exactly what you're going to do about it. Carry on, then!)

* * *

OrcishLibrarian's story goes a little something like this:

There is a beautiful passage in Dylan Thomas's "Poetic Manifesto" - a collection of answers he gave to questions he was asked while on a U.S. tour, which was published after his death - where he explains why he felt driven to write poetry:

Quote:
I should say I wanted to write poetry in the beginning because I had fallen in love with words... What the words stood for, symbolised, or meant, was of very secondary importance; what mattered was the sound of them as I heard them for the first time on the lips of the remote and incomprehensible grown-ups who seemed, for some reason, to be living in my world. And these words were, to me, as the notes of bells, the sounds of musical instruments, the noises of wind, sea, and rain, the rattle of milkcarts, the clopping of hooves on cobbles, the fingering of branches on a window pane, might be to someone, deaf from birth, who has miraculously found his hearing. I did not care what the words said, overmuch, nor what happened to Jack & Jill & the Mother Goose rest of them; I cared for the shapes of sound that their names, and the words describing their actions, made in my ears; I cared for the colours the words cast on my eyes... I fell in love – that is the only expression I can think of – at once, and am still at the mercy of words, though sometimes now, knowing a little of their behaviour very well, I think I can influence them slightly and have even learned to beat them now and then, which they appear to enjoy...

Well, I love stories. I'm not sure I can love stories half as well as Thomas loved words, and I know that I can't put the words together to tell them half as well as he did. But I love them in my own way, because they are a kind of magic. They are, frankly, the most powerful kind of magic I know of. They are a kind of fantastical illusion, the narrative equivalent of smoke and mirrors: they take the unreal and make it so real, that we have no choice but to believe in it. And the emotions they can evoke are as real as can be. Stories can make us smile or frown, laugh or cry.

A good story can change your life. I know they've changed mine.

I love stories about characters whose fictional lives enrich our real ones. I love to see what they have to say for themselves. I love to see how they carry themselves, how they go about their business. I love to see how they speak to each other, dance around each other, or even dance with each other. I love to see them strive to be whatever it is they're trying to be. I love to see them push against the multiverse, and to see how the multiverse pushes back.

I care what happens to Aloise & Alessa & the M:EM rest of them.

I like worlds, and I like adventures, but it's the characters I really love. Most of all, I love the moment when I feel like I start to know them well enough that we can share a few words. Because then we can start to tell each other stories.

Telling stories is just about the hardest thing I try to do on any sort of a regular basis. It's certainly among the hardest things I choose to do of my own volition and for my own pleasure. But the one thing harder than trying to tell stories would be not trying to tell stories at all. Because a life with fewer stories in it would be gray, dull, and ultimately deadly to the soul. This world can be plenty gray, dull, and deadly enough without forsaking the little sparkle which comes from hearing a good story or telling one in return.

So, having washed ashore upon this little island sanctuary for stories in the midst of the vast digital ocean, I find myself humbled and proud to be counted among such fine company as this. I have one thing to ask, and one thing to offer in return:

Tell me your stories, please, and I'll tell you mine.

Woohoo!

That's especially good news since Jakkard kinda started as your thing before I took it over, and the plane's almost done now.
