Post subject:  Urza's Ruinous Blast - Break the Card

So, did anyone make Urza's Ruinous Blast work?

When it works, it's awesome, one-sided wipe, kills all the exile enchantments etc.

Weaknesses:
You have to play a lot of legendaries
Only instant/sorcery removal
Niv-Mizzet, Ghalta and Walkers are a huge pain in the ass

I've tried Jeskai, Abzan and Naya. All seem inconsistent. Naya was best of those 3 if you got the curve.

I'll post the lists when I'm on my laptop.

Any ideas how to build around it?

Unluckily I deleted the Abzan and Jeskai ones.

Jeskai was based on Teferi, Angels, Raff Capashen, Justice Strike, Deafening Clarion.

You could run some catch-all removal like Conclave Tribunal and Ixalan's Binding to kill opponent's legendaries. Also if you're going full-on legends, Mox Amber should be good.

Your deck seems a bit disjointed as well. Tajic for example is an out-and-out aggressive card, but you're also running Karn and Vivien, which are out-and-out grindy cards.

Karn is there to allow T4 Walker, T5 URB. Vivien for card draw.

I could see it work in a lich's mastery deck, but you'd have to keep non-legendary permanent s to a minimum which is a problem in itself because some of the best lifegain cards are non-legendary permanents like Dawn of Hope or Fountain of Renewal.
Vraska's contempt and cleansing nova would have to be your side plan.
Another hard choice would be picking a win-con... Maybe something like nezahal would be the way to go or good ol' teferi, but that would be boring as hell.
Also, the ruinous blast is plain bad against Jeskai or esper control, because their few permanents are usually legendary.

yeah, and on top of that to cast URB (as it's a legendary sorcery), you need a legendary CREATURE or planeswalker on board :-)

and the poor creatures get killed pretty fast in this meta ;-)

You don't have much of an option then right? Offhand the only removal for planeswalkers I can think of are black - Vraska's Contempt & Plaguecrafter.

yeah, or jsut a lot of creatures and haste, like the naya version. but if you draw the wrong part of your deck... and on top if you play 4x of each cheap naya legendary you can have dead draws in hand :D

It's really hard to make it work, probably abzan is the way to go due to cheap walkers at 4 CMC. But then you can just play Settle and Soot... that's how my deck evolved...
