Yeah I found it. I'm getting the hang of it. You always have to leave mana open for protection.

Tip: leave mana open for protection if -

1) You have a creature with Curious Obsession and your opponent might still have removal (e.g. if you just played Obsession).
2) You have a threat-light hand. For example if your hand is 4 lands, Tempest Djinn, Dive Down, Curious Obsession, you want to wait till 4 mana to play Tempest Djinn if you can, because if it dies you have nothing left. The reverse is fine if your hand is creature-heavy.
3) When you can afford it. For example if your board position is already stable or if the opponent not playing a removal spell would still be beatable.
4) Not a decisive factor, but if there's something you can do if the opponent doesn't play removal - e.g. Merfolk Trickster, Opt - then keeping mana up is more attractive.
5) Keep into account your clock and how fast it'll be even if opponent has removal. For example it's fine losing a creature with Curious Obsession if the opponent is going to die to Tempest Djinn pretty soon.

Yeah I’m to Gold 3. Highest I’ve been yet. This deck seems to struggle against the new Izzet Drakes. They’ve got a ton of removal and are using a similar strategy. Is that a better deck?

Izzet drakes is a bit favored over mono blue, but it's not as bad as with white weenies, that one is hard to win (just my experience).

Thought I would share my BO1 version that is a little unorthodox but so far has been great.

edit: I was gonne say you might not need that many lands, but since you dont run opt and have 4x Surge Mare, it's probably for the best you run 21 :D

Yup sometimes I wonder if I should be running 22.

Been running 1-2 blink instead of exclusion. I figure it's 2 mana, instant speed and can bounce more than just creatures - bouncing a wilderness reclamation after they tapped out to cast it is satisfying - and if I get flooded (with 19 lands it happens with obsession going) can pay the kicker to draw a card.

Not sure if that outweighs having another creature to attack with, but it's a spell worth considering I think.

Nothing wrong with running blink but I prefer the extra bodies and like the tempo swing the mage brings vs aggressive decks. + He is a wizard that helps get the discount rate on Wizard's retort.
My version is all about adding bodies to the board where the other versions are little more controlly but run pterry so there is a reward there.

If anyone wants to take over the primer, feel free - I don't foresee myself adding much to it, maybe a bit more about Pteramander & Essence Capture in BO1, but I'm not seeing myself play BO3 for quite a while.
