Can you imagine the writers pitching Emma Thompson that idea? I’d kill to be in that room

Completely boring debate I had with a friend today, thought the minds of NGA could help us out.

Most sports are a combination of skill and athleticism and we were trying to find the sport which is closest to a 50:50 ratio of the two.

For example we had something like snooker/F1 at close to 100% skill, 0% athleticism, likewise something like a marathon is pretty much pure athleticism right?

Soccer was a fierce debate but I had it as 65% skill, 35% athleticism

In the end the closest we were happy with was Grand slam Tennis (60/40?) but reckon we could get closer - any ideas?

Boxing? The best athlete doesn’t win, the best boxer wins. But if you’re not in peak shape in your weight class, you have almost no chance to win

I think the more interesting conversation is which sports are MOSTLY athletics and less skill? I’d argue most Olympic sports perhaps? The old ones, primarily

Running is PURE athletics as is walking as is swimming. The more perfectly you can tone your body by training non stop, the more success you have

Skating is more skill based as is surfing but there are plenty of Olympic sports that are mostly athletic

—-

Here’s a cool way of figuring out if a sport is skill or athletics:

When you get ready for it, are you practicing or are training?

Swimmers don’t practice swimming, they are training.

Snowboarders practice

Most things that require great skill require practice, tons of it

Skating requires more practice than training

Boxing requires an equal amount of both I think

I need someone else who can handle the intensity of Mayor of Kingstown to watch it so i can discuss it. It's on paramount+

We are playing France now in women’s soccer and we need to win both this match and the next match to advance. Two must-wins right out of the gate, ouch

You two are both misrepresenting what was said about gerrymandering. We never said they were equal. I said they were bith forms of eliminating your opponent. If you have argument against that, present it. But stop it with the "Yeah guys these two things are totally equal" because that's NOT what was said. As we say in sports; They are in the same ballpark.

F1 is atleast 15% athleticism. Your body has to be in top physical shape to withstand 5G force while turning.

Not only was it not said Sixty, it wasn’t even implied

Once I saw the counter argument was anchored to that misconception, I gave up

I feel somewhat relievd that sixty knew what I was basically trying to say

——

Ooo Canada just got a bronze medal in women’s fencing. Our first ever in that sport

Having trouble watching this soccer match. I feel guilty rooting for Canada but I love that the crowd is behind France so I’d love for us to break some hearts

——

Sixty, what kind of training do F1 pilots routinely take? I honestly have no idea. Obviously there are no fatties but I never saw those drivers as athletes or athlete-adjacent

I may be completely wrong but I thought G force tolerance was kinda genetic rather then something you could practise?

I remember reading an article about fighter pilots getting disqualified due to a lack of tolerance and them being like "sucks, but what can you do?" rather then something they could work on

Astronauts is the same thing. They get subjected to it and are disqualified if they pass out too early. I don’t think you can build tolerance

——

Ah crap France just scored 1-0

Hey here’s a dumb question, for women’s soccer, are you allowed having a male coach or does it have to be all girls?

//-

Oh nice, we scored. 1-1 and they’re subbing the goalkeeper now. Never seen that

Goalkeeper being taken away on a stretcher after getting kicked to the face by a teammate. Not really understanding the stretcher need

—-:

These Canadian sportscasters are terrible. They’re complaining that the narrative all day has been on the suspensions and the fine from FIFA instead of on all these important highlights from the soccer team.

.,. But YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT IT LOL.

You can’t complain about a story staying in the cycle when you bring it up

—-

Oh man girl soccer is so much more entertaining than men’s. There’s so much aggression and attitude between the players. Just shoving each other out of frustration. Getting fouled like crazy. Super hot

I'm pushing back on that.

They aren't in the same ballpark. I don't think they are even in the same universe, hence my 'wtf' level replies.

But that said, I'm not sure I really want to continue the discussion at this point. So if you disagree, I think at this point let's just agree to disagree.

Agree to disagree. You misrepresent my arguments and then want to bow out gracefully.

Not even in the same Universe? What is that supposed to mean because last I checked we all occupy the same universe. I don't even know to argue against gross misrepresentions and grandiose statements like that. I guess since I can't argue against it, you win.

Jeez man, 5 minutes left and it’s 1-1. If we tie, we can’t advance. France doesn’t mind a tie so they are taking their time between plays and it’s funny how it plays out. You have our girls ripping the ball out of their hands between plays to get the game moving

Alright fine, let's continue then.

I don't think gerrymandering has anything in common with murdering your political opponents. So fine, you don't like the different universe comment, gerrymandering is a 1 where murdering your opponents is a 10 on a scale of 10. It's like bringing up pinching someone when we're having a discussion about assault. Both actions could cause pain, but one of those actions is a LOT more severe.

The comments were made during a discussion about what Trump might do, and in the middle of a discussion about what Putin actually does.

I'll tell you what, if Trump ends up in power and the worst thing he does is some gerrymandering, I'm going to feel like we really dodged a bullet - literal actual bullet.

Perhaps I missed your point entirely, in which case 1) I apologize, and 2) feel free to make it again, without the potential mix up (on my end) from unintended (by you) context that may have had nothing to do with your thought process, but was still going on in the thread at the same time.

No no no. We're done. You win the argument

Agreed

Omg Canada just scored 11 minutes into stoppage time!!! I can’t believe it

2-1

Unreal

So happy for those girls

The commentary is so acidic “that’s what happens when you test a green goalkeeper”

Okay, my bad then. With gerrymanding you have at least the option of going to the courts and saying "hey this is happening." and they either agreeing with you and doing something to fix it or them not. Along with other remedies that take longer such as redistricting.

A dictatorship about the only remedy you have is leaving if you can or over throwing it.

If those are in the same ball park so is simply voting your opponent out of office or legally disqualifying them.
