How my viewpoint has changed since originally making this thread:

Magic the Gathering: Arena is one of the worst digital CCG's in almost every way imaginable.

The only reason it's not going to be a complete dumpster fire is that there are enough established players it will be able to turn a profit, because people are that addicted to Magic the Gathering. But this will not be a hit success.

And there is no longer an addendum "unless they make major changes". It's too far gone and too late for them to make the kind of changes they would need to make for this game to be a major hit. The level of changes required aren't going to happen simply due to the politics of the thing.

So we aren't getting a majorly successful MTG game that is Free to Play. I'm just resigned to that. But to me it's still worth criticizing the game at every opportunity, for anyone who is upset with the game, so that when they take a 3rd crack at this they will have plenty of feedback to know how they **** up.

Assuming people are going to trust them enough to try their 3rd attempt at this at some point.

On a completely separate note, I think the following really needs to be stated:

Magic the Gathering is no longer the default best card game out there. It does not automatically have the best mechanics, the most depth, or the most compelling gameplay. You can only say that it has those things in your opinion.

There is so much good competition out there that this is no longer the best card game by default. It is a lot of people's preferred card game, but that is not the same thing as the uncontested best card game people act like it is. Magic the Gathering at this point in time is merely another "solid" competitor in a sea of stiff competition who have all already released a significantly better F2P product. At the rate they are going, MTG has a better chance of becoming a digital relic than a major digital success. Because it's brand is nowhere near worth what it used to be. They've done way too much to run it into the ground, and the current offering on display is only going to make things worse.

It's going to be somewhere between really good and good enough. It will at least be entertaining, and I find it hard to believe Disney is going to screw up Star Wars to the point where it will be a bad film.

If it wasn't a Disney film I would have less certainty that it is going to meet at least a certain level of minimum quality. But they are really overprotective of their branding, so I can't imagine them screwing this one up too bad.

Edit: But I also expect them to play it kind of safe so ... eh we'll find out.

So far, I run 2 banners, 2 tetsuko, 2 Negate, 2 Cancel, 2 Bontu's monument. Still adjusting stuff, you really only need that 1 counter to get rid of a wipe or a bad dinosaur with wipeness.

A thing though: Ixalan's Binding is a thing ><

Do we know if this game will be cross platform, or at least have cross platform accounts?

I guess it can be coded to any platform coz Unity -from what I know... I dont know much- but cross platform depends on so many things... I guess IOS is not going to mix themselves with those filthy Xbox users- Barney I´m looking at you-, and maybe PS4 shareholders don´t want anything to do with Steam users....
I guess that if all is handled by WOTC it can be done... but that does not sound like the best way to go...

Well no cross-platform play, I’d be indeferrent... but no cross-platform accounts, I’d be concerned. Last time I had accounts on both XBOX and IOS, but this game is wayyyyy too expensive for that.

I guess cross-platform accounts should be absolutely doable.

On the other hand one Cross Platform NGA tournament... that would be awesome!!

TES Legends has both, so if Arena can't pull that off then it will be very lame.
Anyway, I caved in and blew 100$ on the game, buying a sh|tload of dominaria boosters and getting a metric ton of wildcards. I just got tired of not having Common and uncommon WCs to try out certain cards and new decks and being limited to the same decks over and over again. But mostly, I decided that my life is worth 100 bucks, for when the next wipe comes I don't really want to spend 2-3 months playing crappy Starter decks and getting my butt handed to me constantly.
I currently have 9 Mythic WCs, 12 rare WCs and 20+ Common and uncommon (and a Vault at 80%. So I'm gonna de hoarding for kaladesh pretty much from now on.

Very unsure about Arena. As much as I have played it and enjoyed it and in particular watching CGB’s channel (you tube) I can have a few decent matches but at times games can just take too long and it seems it’s an ever decreasing period of just playing and having fun, far less any sensible progress or enjoyment. To offset the pay to win which clearly will exist I am looking to see if the sealed at least ends up with a level playing field. Still not sure how this works but can imagine you need to win more than you lose to break even. If it ends up being gem entry (hence in effect having to pay) I will not even get started. As it stands I can get wins for a pack but would save gold to enter a sealed type event (though it seems that may take some time). Constructed just seems too much geared to pay to win. Not even sure if they have an idea on a release date. Lately I haevn’t even been watching CGB’s vids . Somehow the Magic (forgive the pun) that used to exist with Duels just seems missing in Arena to be honest. Shame, real shame. SD
