I'm actually glad we had RIX draft again, it gave me good reason to take a short hiatus from MTGA and binge Hollow Knight.

As much as I like DOM draft, don't know how much of it I'll get into this time. Singleton beckons.

First draft of the week report.
I first picked one HELM!!! yay! then I had to choose between Dimir or Izzet... I saw one late Shivan fire that convinced me to go red...-I´m starting to sound like I got a clue of what im doing- I kept picking to that plan and ended building one sick Izzet wizards deck with lots of ETB effects, this deck is a beast, I have been lucky enough to draw the helm in 3 games and I have crushed one GB saprolings deck, one Mono-blue that never got off the ground and one UW flyers that could not handle a combination of Journey mage and Firefist Adept, this guy had lots of tricks and some nice creatures, but when the wizards start piling and you drop the helm on the firefist adept is GG most of the times.
I´m loving the Helm of the Host!!
3-0 so far :D

Reminds me of this deck I went 6-3 with from the last time QD DOM was around. Mirari and Garna likely weren't worthwhile, but I was short on playables after raredrafting a bit. :V

Ended up with Helm on Skittering a few times and almost pulled all the lands out of my deck. Helm on Zahid or Firefist Adept was just gross, don't think I ever managed to get it on Adeliz though.

I was very short on removal and very worried about it, but I ended up snatching lots of tempo plays in the form of Blink, Trickster, and Journeymage, the deck just accumulate value plays and little by little you end up stealing the game. Firefist Adept is removal with a body, Keldon Raider is one solid body with upside and Zahid is my other bomb... also I got one drake and one sphinx in the air force... just put the Helm on any of those creatures and you can figure out how much fun to play this has been. Izzet wizards in a tempo shell have proven to be a fantastic archetype for me. Let's see how it goes in the end, but so far this has been a fun deck.

Ended 6-3 with the deck... the Helm was great but the set up was too slow in a couple of games and I got mana flooded in other.

A bit short on playables with this deck, dabbled with a mostly cut white through pack 2 until black finally made itself available in pack 3. One of the highlights of the so far 4-2 run:

Image

Of course Hexproof is a fun mechanic, why do you ask?

Update: 7-2? Wasn't optimistic post-draft, but it got there. First picked Blackblade and it certainly overperformed in a deck that wanted to get to the lategame anyway. Syncopate was great, countering In Bolas's Clutches in two separate games.

Well the honeymoon is over - went 3-3 in my first ever Dominaria draft. I'm extremely unfamiliar with the format and didn't know how to build a deck. Did I want Gift of Growth? What about Thorn Elemental? Should I run all three of my Stronghold Confessors given that I have two Song of Freyalise, and if I run all three of them is Gift of Growth good? What about the Jousting Lance + Gaea's Protector combo - how good is that? Do I splash blue for Tetvoya or red for Fight with Fire + Fiery Intervention? I actually ran the blue splash for a few games, then switched to the red one, a clear sign I have no idea what I'm doing. If anyone has pointers on those cards please share.

Also I have no idea what this pick should be, any ideas?

Image

On another note Thallid Omnivore waaay overperformed. I could just attack with it and if they block, sacrifice other creatures to eat all of theirs. If they didn't then they take three. Great card, would draft again especially in a saprolings deck like this one.

Currently 3-1 (or 4-1) with BR valuetown; basically locked it in when I tabled a Garna pack 1. Had some ideas for a White splash (late Blessed Light pack 2 and my first-pick On Serra's Wings), but got no fixing for it.

@Banedon: IMO the pick here is between Fight with Fire and Thallid Omnivore; while Omnivore is the safe pick (and, as you already stated, pretty great) Fight with Fire is an insane and easily splashable uncommon. I'd pick Fight with Fire and prioritize picking 1-2 Grow from the Ashes as it works insanely well with both Tatyova and Fight with Fire and allows for the double-splash. And no, that's not crazy; Dominaria Limited is a very slow format, comparable to M19, but with much better bombs and more ways to splash for them (though given my experience with draft 1, it seems the AI will pick Skittering Surveyor a lot higher than it should). Also, it's an 18-land format, meaning you can run, say, an 8-7-3 manabase to splash for Fight with Fire even with no additional fixing.

Song of Freyalise really wants you to pick up token-makers like Saproling Migration, Yavimaya Sapherd Spore Swarm and Slimefoot, the Stowaway. Stronghold Confessor is not a great combo with it as it's much worse as a 1 mana 1/1 menace than as a 4 mana 3/3 menace (though if there is a deck that ever wants to cast it as a 1/1 for 1, yours is close to it) I'd probably run all 3 of them on the basis of them being better 4-drops than Gaea's Protector and Cabal Paladin (card's only good in historic-heavy decks, most of these are WB or UB and yours most certainly is not).

The first Jousting Lance is just a good card in most decks period. Gift of Growth and Thorn Elemental are playable, neither is terribly exciting though. Gaea's Protector is bottom-of-the-barrel filler to unplayable IMO; there's enough incidental small bodies around to punish the 4/2 statline and there is enough good removal around to make a battlecruiser-strategy not worth it.

Yup, I agree with everything Modulo said, just to add something, Song of Freyalise is one hell of a splashing mechanism and you got 2!, so I would slam that fight with fire there, and try to catch some other bombs coz that thing can end games on the spot.

Also, 18 lands is a very good suggestion I have gone that road quite often in DOM.

Thalid omnivore its a mini-game on its own, the fear of activation is very real so it trades up rather consistently a couple of tokens makes it a lot better.

Blue is very good in Dominaria and generally, I would try to build something in the Sultai colors, splashing red for removal is also very good advice.

Thanks for tips. I thought Song was a splashing tool too but it literally never help me cast my splashes in that run.

Is there a general evaluation of how good a card is somewhere? It's not easy for me to tell which cards are playable and which are not.

Also: went 6-3 in my last draft. The record is a lie though, because P2P2 I was passed a Lyra Dawnbringer when I was already half-white. That card is bonkers, it carried me to a win in many games even though the rest of my deck was pretty bad. I had no removal for example. Once again I wasn't sure of my configuration:

Image

I had a couple of Sparring Constructs that I didn't play. Other cards like the Caligo-Skin Witch, Dub, the 6-mana 5/5 trampling artifact, etc, I really have no idea. But then, if I draw Lyra I generally win, so yeah. Two of the losses came to Icy Manipulator and another Lyra respectively (he also had Blessed Light, a card I would've dearly loved). Don't remember the last loss but it was probably with an earlier configuration of the deck, when I still was still using Sparring Constructs.

Now I only need 3 more Lyras to play angels in constructed ...

EDIT: Oh yeah, opened Shalai in my next draft, couldn't pick her because was already B/G/r.

Check this out:
First Picks-LVD
Pick Order -Karsten

If you got time to listen to the Sunset show form Limited Resources there is hardly any loss in that show, they talk of the format just before M19 is released so pretty much all that worked and what did not.

IMO Shalai is a bomb that you play if either in White or Green. In White she is a 3/4 flier for 4. In Green you splash for her and she buffs your team to infinity and beyond.

Caligo Skin-Witch is quite good; either a 1/3 turn 2 or a pretty devastating turn 6. She is not splashable however; and your deck seems to be splashing black (which I'm not sure I agree with)
With both an Arcane Flight and an On Serra's Wings, Snapper is the much better 6-drop than Pardic Wanderer, so that omission makes sense. I could see running Pardic in a U/B/w version of the deck (which would still splash Lyra off the Compass and maybe 4 Plains).
Compass is a card I generally don't like, but your deck needs it. Sparring Constructs are fairly bad in most decks.

Yeah, I don't know what the red splash was, but I would have considered pivoting to GBw with Shalai unless it was an even bigger bomb than Shalai (which is possible).

After loosing my first 2 games, I pulled off 7 straight wins to go 7-2 with a :b::w: deck.
MVPs: divest and the eldest reborn (unfortunately I didn't manage to drafting much removal), managed to recur the saga comboing it with tragic poet (even got a nice from one of my opponents.
Honorable mentions: Torgaar, Famine Incarnate (life gain saved my butt and totally swung game 6), Serra angel and Shield of the Realm(what a pain in the ass this card is).
After the 2 losses, I made 1 change, swapped out Soul Salvage (which has been consistently bad) for a Adamant Will (which was great).

I have a GW go-wide deck that is currently 0-1 and feels very underpowered. I think I drafted it poorly and I don't love a go-wide strategy in limited.

Yeah go wide is non intuitive to play unless it’s tokens which you don’t feel attached to

The way I see it, limited is all about bombs, removal and evasion. If your lucky enough to get good amount s of these, your good to go. If your lacking in any one of these, you better hope the other 2 make up for it.
You also really have to change your mindset from constructed, because all those goofy combos and cards that are just too janky or too slow for standard, can and will work in limited.
It's also ok to go with higher curves, because 2 and 1 drops are less important.
The baseline is 17 land, 15-16 creatures (2 or 3 bombs at least) and 7-8 non-creature spells (half should be removal if possible).

7-1 with this deck, this was so much fun Dominaria is such a good limited environment I love that set.
The loss was against Izzet wizards where I flooded and tapped my island to cast one green spell and could not cast another blocker.
The curve was very high but I got 3 dorks and one Impulse to fix and ramp, they appear almost every game so that was pretty cool.

The Janky play of the run was putting Arcane Flight on one Kicked Grunn to end the game in one swing with a 21/21 flyer..
