After judging a Standard PPTQ in which Kalitas saw a decent amount of play, I've concluded that it is secretly a terribly designed Magic card. Many, many players were forgetting both the exiling and the tokens, and to many of their opponents getting tokens "felt" so much like a triggered ability that they continually, instinctively treated their opponent missing their own Kalitas the way they do missed beneficial triggers.

FYI: Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet's ability is not a triggered ability. You cannot allow your opponent to "miss" it. If your opponent forgets it, you need to remind them, and if that doesn't happen right away you need to call a judge to sort things out.

Yes, I understand it feels terrible, but them's the rules. Blame R&D.

Knowledge knows no bounds.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

Luckily nobody has missed the token or exile in my local playgroup, though this does make me wonder if they think it's a triggered ability...In a Commander game recently I had to explain how Mana Reflection (which uses a replacement ability like Kalitas does) interacted with Mirari's Wake, with someone asking why they couldn't order the triggers so that they got 4 mana instead of 3 from a basic land. I explained it as best I could, and they seemed to accept my explanation, but it does illustrate the general lack of understanding about what is or isn't a triggered ability.
