If my opponent uses something like a Royal Assassin on a creature of mine, could I target the assassin with Liquimetal Coating and then counter the assassin's ability with Brown Ouphe's ability? ~SE++ |

Yes, the source of the activated ability is now an artifact, so the ability is a legal target for Brown Ouphe's ability. There aren't any weird rules about the characteristics of a source being fixed as the ability is put on the stack. |
