Commander Decks Going off Sale: With next week’s downtime, wizards will stop selling the Commander 2011 and 2013 decks in the online store. The most recent sets of decks will remain on sale. The big cards in the sets being removed from the store are True-Name Nemesis and Toxic Deluge, plus a number of desirable commanders. Containment Priest will still be available.

Though I am sure there is an official source somewhere for those who like hunting for easter eggs.

I was surprised that the old commander decks where kept in when the new ones came out. Though with the notice of them not putting out any more I figured it was at least a good move to keep the old ones to give people a choice. Especially for new to magic and/or new to the client people who just wanted to jump into commander. I feel them getting rid of these decks is horrible. The code is already there for them so its actually taking effort to remove them unlike new ones where it takes the five minutes of effort to create them. Maybe its a sign that they really only want to support draft and standard on the client.

With this change I am considering getting one of each deck. Then also getting a few extra of the True Name Nemesis deck as that card would already sit above the price point of the deck with it being sold in the store. Most likely its going to climb up even more in a year or so.

What are your thoughts?

Seems like a gamble. If they release the chase cards from those old decks in their silly prize packs, and a lot of them get, er, prized... But, I'm no speculator. Anything I've ever gotten that has dramatically increased in value is just random Johnny jank that finally found its purpose in a tournament deck. That said, I might make the opposite gamble and sell my one Containment Priest now against the odds of a supply boom. Not like I use it.

The commander cards being rewarded in the upcoming events should only be for the new commander products that they are not release to be sold online. Those new cards are already going to be really scarce as is. Not to say they would not do something in the future with some kind of Legacy Masters product, but such a thing is probably a ways away.

Legendary Cube Prize Packs will have cards from the newly released Commander (2015 Edition), as well as Commander (2014 Edition), Commander (2013 Edition), Magic the Gathering Commander, Conspiracy, Planechase (2012 Edition), and Commander's Arsenal sets (the 56 cards included from Commander 2015 will make up the vast majority of the ones that are new to Magic Online)

There may well be a more recent post contradicting this that I am not aware of. I think that they actually WANT to increase supply of the chase cards, but don't want a fixed price product to determine the market value, so they are releasing them as randoms. Since they have access to event statistics that we can only speculate about, I would hope that they have reason to believe that enough product will be introduce into circulation via prize packs to significantly impact the overall supply.

I guess I was wrong and my assumptions were wrong.

Man, this is going to be really horrible if any new commander cards see play.

I wrote about this a little in my article that I just put to bed on puremtgo.com but to encapsulate my thoughts here: I feel this is part of a larger campaign on WOTC's part to eradicate casual play from MTGO and perhaps MTG in general.
